You guys are dreaming. Hope you are not in the stock market trade.

Freo is the absolute master of selling low (McPhee, Clement) and buying high (Carr and Des).

Clubs look to trade with us because we are stupid. We put 50-80 games into a player and then look to ship them off (Croad, Clement, McPhee - basically half an all australian backline).

So since we've put resources into Murphy, Schammer, Polak etc... we should trade them so we can look like c***heads again? Give me a break.

And ysaye - Syliva and Mclean (for starters) aren't that crash hot and no where near "stars". Grass is always greener isn't it?

I didnt talk about trading in my last post and I have lamented most of our trades before they even started - I was against both the J. Carr and Headland trades. I also long wanted the club to recruit low not high - like Steven Armstrong, Richard Hadley before getting a premiership, Krakouer and a few others that weren't rated but were young and showed a bit of potential.

Far from the grass being greener, I actually rate our defenders like Parker and Haddrill, Mundy, Hayden and Thornton and Grover. I would take a fit Haddrill (Maybe even a fit Parker) over Clement any day, and a Parker, fit Haddrill and Mundy over Croad as well. I am tempted to say I would take Mundy over McPhee. I wouldn't trade Pavlich for any other player in the competition.

But are we losing because we have hopless defenders or hopless forwards? No - we are losing because our centre midfield is getting ripped apart each by good opposition. Which midfielder that we traded would you have back? The only one I can think of is McPhee - and he wasn't a midfielder when he was here and he doesn't play midfield much anymore at Essendon.

On the nowhere-near stars issue, FYI I don't rate Sylvia and Mclean either, but some people do. Some people also think Daniel Wells is overrated. Heck - some people rate Luke Hodge as the number one player and others think he is vastly overrated. I just put all in all the young-gun-as-rated-by-some midfielders because some people rate some of them them and others don't, as there is no real measure for "Star Midfielder".

If you want it in investment terms - a top 5 pick is the closest thing you are going to get to anything like a "safe" investment in terms of getting good players of good player type (IE. KP or Midfielder). It's not super safe but it is a safer bet than trading and development-waiting and seeing strategies.

SELWOOD COLLARD JETTA

Out

we would need to trade some quality to get quality, we will are in a good position to get rid of some KPP's and slow midfielders.

Murphy (AFL ready KPP)
Thornton (Injury Prone)
Polak (Probably not worth trading as he could be anything.
Schammer (high trade value, useless to us trotting around in defence, Hayden, Duffield and Bell could do his job adeqautely.)
Crowley (AFL experience, may have some value)
Dunn (slow, injury prone)
Gilmore (young, booming kick. would play each week for carlton/richmond/brisbane)

We have on our list 13 KPP's! 7 is an adequate number to play in a game. We are currently playing 6.
Pavlich, Sandilands,Hadrill, Polak,Longmuir,Johnson,McPharlin,Thornton, Murphy,Campbell, Polak, Warren, Warnock - That is way too many especially for a team that plays 60% of games on Subiaco.

Remember everything is for sale at the right price.

Dunn- Maybe worth a 3rd round pick. If he plays 8-10 games at a reasonable level this year then we would maybe get a 2nd round pick, but he won't. Should have been traded last year because he isn't up to AFL level. Would be stoked to get a pick in the late 30's or early 40's for him.

Gilmore- Maybe worth a 3rd round pick, but unlikely. Will be on our list next season because we will have a number of retirements this year, but can't see him being an AFL footballer in 2008. Trade for anything offered.

Thornton- No club would give up a 2nd round pick, he is injury prone and can't put on weight because of illness. He is a good player when fit, so deserves his spot on our list.

Polaks trade value is currently low due to poor form last year and his off field problems. We would be idiots if we traded him. Will flourish under a real coach. If we traded Polak after a successful 2006 and Pavlich went home in 2007 we'd be stuffed.

Schammer- Probably worth pick between 10-15. Will be a good player. Too easily knocked off the ball at the moment, but when he improves his core strength could be the solution to our clearance problems. Keep him here.

Crowley- Would probably get a pick between 20-30 for him. Currently in our best 18 IMHO, and trading him would be stupid. Is tall and courageous with great skills, and could also be a solution to our clearaance problems.

Murphy- Like Schammer probably worth between pick 10-15, maybe later in a draft filled with KPP. Kicked 70 goals in his first year in the WAFL and will be a superb forward. Like Polak will flourish under a real coach. Trading him would end up a worse decision than McPhee IMO.

Of your list of 12 KPP (Polak's listed twice) 3 are ruckmen, so that leaves 9 to choose from. Campbell and Warren haven't played a game, so that leaves 7, and Hadrill, Thornton and McPharlin are injury prone. I certainly wouldn't be trading Pavlich, Polak, Murphy, Johnson and McPharlin, who are our only KPP with trade value. IMO we need another developing ruckman and a fullback.

I'm happy for us to trade for draft picks if a good deal is offered (which I can't see happening for the players you have listed). If we are going to trade for picks I would much rather trade Headland or Medhurst than Crowley, Schammer, Murphy or Polak. Medhurst would probably go for a pick in the low 20's, Headland late teens/early 20's.

.

A very disappointing number 10 draft pick. Lots of big wraps for him in 2003 but he has done nothing, and sadly the club may well end up spending money on nothing by picking him up, as he was the draft pick we got from trading Croad back to the Hawks.

In investment terms, all draft picks are speculative because they have not performed yet (Polak). A "safe" investment would be a trade for a player who is a proven and reliable performer (Bell, Black, Headland). Typically you pay over the dds for a safe investment, and of course there is till some unknown (past performnce is not an inicator of future returns???).

Just an update.

Collard kicked 6 goals for South and Jetta has been BOG or close to playing reserves.

Though both are eligible, neither are playing colts. Gives you an idea of the quality of these two youngsters.

Interesting to read what everyone thought back in may before the 9 game winning streak. I'm not upset at losing Polak as i once thought i'd be.

Just wanted to highlight the profiles of O'Brien and Collard.

15) Clayton Collard

Midfielder

181cms and 76kgs.
4/12/88
South Fremantle

An aboriginal player from Western Australia who is a team mate of Leroy Jetta. Has good pace and is a very good kick of the ball. Superb goal sense and just seems to know where they are and is so natural in that regard. Has played as a defender and also as a wing and shows himself to be versatile and a very adaptable player. Did not look lost in those roles but I do feel he is better suited as an attacking player who gets his own ball rather than a player who works off an opponent. In the forward line is where he does his best work. Either setting up a goal with a precise kick or finishing the work himself.

Capable of winning the ball in the crushes as well and will not hesitate to put his head over it and he is quite a reasonable size for a player who has only just turned 17. Good body size and a decent height to go with speed, skill and versatility. A little bit of an impact player rather than a consistent one but a lot of that can be put down to playing on the half forward “graveyard”. Not too sure about his endurance to play a game out on the ball at this stage.Reasonable in the air for his size but is better with the ball on the ground.

Looks like playing some senior games with South Fremantle in the WAFL this year and then be part of the WA team for the U18 Championships where they will be hard to beat. He played in them last year but was on the bench for most of it.

A very clever and athletic player who has flair, poise and a real cutting edge to his work in the forward line. Will develop more and more as a midfielder over time and has all the tools to become a dangerous midfielder when he is finished. A very smooth mover who is effortless and anticipates well and reads the play.

A bigger and stronger version of his close friend Jetta. Not as quick or as exciting but that is more a case of how good Jetta is rather than something lacking in Collard. I think in time he will become a very attacking wing who can go forward and kick goals as well as run and carry the ball and show poise and class as a link player.

16) Brock O’Brien

Midfielder/half back flanker

180cms and 79kgs
30/5/1988
Peel Thunder (WA)

Physical player suited to playing on an opponent. Thrives on the contest and has a good strong body already. Impressed at the U18 Championships for Western Australia and was used mainly as a defender there. Showed the ability to play close and also to attack at every opportunity. Used the ball well and showed agility and pace as well as picking the right option.
Clean ball handler who has the hands of a good midfielder and a complete game at this early stage. Tough player who runs through and around similar sized players and will take his time to dispose of the ball. Very versatile and really could develop anywhere.
Managed to play senior football for Peel Thunder in the WAFL last year which is quite a feat for someone so young.
Not lightning quick but has good pace and an all around game which belies his age. Good in the air and capable of taking a strong mark. A very good rebounding small defender at this stage who will hopefully develop into a midfielder over time. Hard and classy at the same time and will be top aged come draft time and most likely play most of this year in the seniors for Peel Thunder. So he wont be much of a risk for the team who takes him. A physically ready player with not as much scope as some of the other smalls but a good overall game and the right attitude and temprement to take the next step up to AFL football.

I like the sound of these two guys, hopefully the club picks them up. When is the draft?

Jetta looked disappointed about being selected by the bombers on channel ten.

The boy and his whole family were in tears. His dad said the immediate family would move to Melbourne but his grandfather said they would miss him. Must have close family ties.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him back in Fremantle colours in a couple years time.

Yeah, he had previously said that he wanted to stay in WA, with his preference for Freo, rather than WCE (smart boy that one - ;) ).

On the flip-side, apparently both Collard and Mourish are... were Toast supporters. Shame that - hopefully they'll get it beaten out of them early on at training... :p Not sure about O'Brien.

Haselby was a West Coast supporter too, look at him now!

They now know that if they don't change their ways it will be off to the Pies for them. :)
