Mahler passes crucial test
IRISH Melbourne Cup hopes continued to be revived at Sandown today as the Aidan O'Brien-trained Mahler passed his latest test without a hitch.
The horse, who was fretting on Wednesday when his stable companion Scorpion was injured, was introduced to a new partner today and, fortunately for those who have backed him from $26 to $11 in the Cup, the pair got on famously.
O'Brien, who arrived in Melbourne on Tuesday, believed Mahler was fretting for Scorpion who had exercised with him every morning until he injured a leg on Monday.
When he saw the horse work on Wednesday, O'Brien became concerned at Mahler's inability to relax and a tendency to sweat heavily.
But a few minor changes, including a haircut, seemed to do the trick and today Mahler became acquainted with his race jockey Stephen Baster.
"They got on very well, the horse seemed very happy," O'Brien said.
Baster also came away uplifted by his early morning encounter.
"He's a lovely horse, very relaxed," Baster said.
"He gave me a really nice feel."
Mahler had his usual warm-up canter over 1000m and after a five minute conference between trainer and jockey he worked strongly over 1200m, running home his final 400m in 25 seconds.
O'Brien admitted he had been extremely concerned when he saw Mahler work on Wednesday morning, but all his worries had now evaporated.
"He probably just missed Scorpion .... his routine changed," O'Brien said.
Mahler will gradually build up to Cup day with shorter, stronger canters over the next three days.
O'Brien, whose results are unsurpassed in world racing, demonstrated some more of his renowned attention to detail after Mahler worked today.
After returning to the barn and having a wash, Mahler's saddle was put back on while he walked around the stable yard.
O'Brien explained the reasoning was that the re-saddling would "keep the horse together".
"You don't want him to totally let down after his work, it just keeps him going for a while longer," he said.
Final acceptances for the Melbourne Cup are due tomorrow evening.

So now that sculptor made the cup... is he any sort of chance of even getting a place? I didn't see him run today.... and i dunno shit about horses haha. Someone told me to back him today and for the cup and i did.. now hes in the cup for sure, am i any shot of a win or place?

Hard to line up because.
Some horses racing in higher grade like Eskimo Queen and Zipping....
Then you got Master O'Rielly who has beaten these class of horses....
Then you got the international horses....
He was good today though and no reason why he won't be there fighting it out again Tuesday. Good win today by Sculptor, well done.

Zipping looks alright and cant exclude Master O'Reilly. I would like to see Efficient show some sort of form, looked the goods when first started.

Sculptor storms into cup contention
A jubilant Levin trainer Peter McKenzie was celebrating his first Melbourne Cup runner after Sculptor overcame pre-race drama to win the group three $A250,000 ($NZ304,285) Saab Quality (2500m) at Flemington.
Aided by a gun ride from New Zealand jockey Lisa Cropp, Sculptor gained automatic entry to Tuesday's big race with an upset long-neck victory over the favourite, former New Zealand-trained stayer The Fuzz.
Sculptor was 27th in order of entry today and needed to win to ensure a spot. A 1kg rehandicap for the win means he will carry 52kg in the Cup and also give Cropp her first ride in the $A5 million epic.
McKenzie, the breeder, owner and trainer, screamed the horse home from the birdcage, leaping in the air when they passed the post under dark, cloudy skies at a packed Flemington.
"Sorry I'm just speechless," he said.
"I think he's a super horse but I own him so I'm biased. He's a tough dude, he really is. He fought like a tiger up the straight."
He was the last Cup contender to arrive in Melbourne, at odds of $250 on Wednesday, and was shortened to $26 by TAB Sportsbet after today's win.

Cummings pulls off boilover, Finland withdrawn
Sirmione wins the Mackinnon Stakes for Bart Cummings at Flemington.
Star trainer Bart Cummings has pulled off another masterstroke with $88 shot Sirmione cruising to victory in the Group One Mackinnon Stakes (2,000m) on Derby Day at Flemington this afternoon.
The surprise win contrasted with the form of star mare Miss Finland, which while finishing fifth did not impress in the run to the line and has been withdrawn from the Melbourne Cup.
Miss Finland started last Saturday's Cox Plate as the favourite but did not threaten in finishing fourth and David Hayes stated then that she would have to run well in the Mackinnon to make it to Tuesday.
Sirmione was not rated a chance in betting for this race or indeed Tuesday's Melbourne Cup but has now firmed to $11 on TAB Sportsbet, fourth on the line of betting with international raider Mahler and the second-place getter in this race, Princess Coup.
Sirmione showed no form in finishing 12th in the Caulfield Cup, whipped by almost 11 lengths by winner Master O'Reilly. With horses of the calibre of Haradasun, Miss Finland and Devil Moon running in the Mackinnon, Sirmione was considered by most pundits to be making up the numbers.
"He settled not too bad, the pace was genuine and he hit the line as strong as anything," jockey Peter Mertens said.
Cummings added: "He's struck form at the right time, it's nice to see the owners succeed like this, they've been very patient. I've talked them into running and be patient and it's all worked out."
Cummings said Sirmione had got too carried away in the Caulfield Cup.
"He covered three wide all the way, when he doesn't get cover he overraces. He had winkers on then and he settles better with the blinkers, contrary to most thoughts, but in this horse that's how it works."

Danny Nikolic Zipping - Relaxed early and really let go inside the last 500m. It was the run of the race. He really hit the line nicely. From a Melbourne Cup point of view you couldn't want any more.
James Winks (Douro Valley) - Ran race before he went out. Bit gangly in the straight. Next time in he will be a very nice horse.
Peter Mertens (Sirmione) - Bart's a genius. The improvement in the last few runs is amazing. Believe me, he's a live chance on Tuesday. I'm very happy to be on him.
Corey Brown (Maybe Better) - Accelerated nicely from the home turn. More than happy with the run particularly after a disappointing run in the Caulfield Cup.
Craig Williams (Miss Finland) - She'll have to go to the paddock. At the 600m, she got her head up and wasn't racing well. I'll have to find myself a new girlfriend.
David Hayes (Miss Finland) - She's out of form and off to the paddock. Would have been great for the race (Melb Cup) to see her in. She looks good but she's lost form and is not her usual self.
Kerrin McEvoy (Princess Coup) - She settled nicely. Mark (Walker) said she can be a little slow out and he did warn me. She travelled up sweetly and if she stays the trip she's got to be a chance on Tuesday.

Damn poor Zipping thats bad barrier and Gallic in just as bad. Princess Coup looking alright and well the fav Master O'Reilly. Purple Moon is one that I wouldnt be suprised to win, actually warming to the horse and with Oliver riding it, it has a real good chance.
Its an odd Cup this year, there is really no real standout and it could be few that can or might win it.

Cup dream Finnished by Zipping
Out of action... Miss Finland will not race in the Melbourne Cup
TRAINER David Hayes will have a record five runners in Tuesday's $5.1 million Melbourne Cup - but glamour mare Miss Finland won't be one of them.
Miss Finland ended her spring of discontent with another lacklustre effort, finishing fifth behind bolter Sirmione in the Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington yesterday.
Hayes spoke to owner John Messara immediately after the race and announced Miss Finland is out of the Cup.
"There is no 'fin' for Tuesday,'' Hayes revealed.
"It would have been great for the race, great for the Melbourne Cup, but she's just not racing well enough at the moment.
"On her present form, she can't win it and we don't want to see her disgraced in any way.''
Messara said it was obvious Miss Finland was racing well below her best form this season.
"She needs a holiday, we'll send her straight to the paddock, give her a good rest over summer and then keep her to races up to 1600m in the autumn. She needs fast run races, a solid tempo and then the chance to finish off strongly. She just hasn't been doing that this spring.''
Hayes said he expected Miss Finland to unleash a sprint similar to that of Mackinnon minor Placegetter Zipping over the final 400m.
"She was ridden the same way as Zipping, out the back, ridden cold,'' Hayes explained.
"But Zipping's hit the line really well and the mare has just plugged away. That will be it for her this spring.''
Hayes reveals he will still have five starters on Tuesday with Tawqeet, Blue Monday, Lazer Sharp, Black Tom and The Fuzz.
Tawqeet ran only 11th in the Mackinnon but Hayes said the stayer did enough to convince him to press on to the Melbourne Cup.
"It was a fair run but I am worried that he doesn't seem to show his best at Flemington,'' Hayes added.
Kerrin McEvoy, rider of Princess Coup, said the mare ran well.
"She picked up nicely and if she can stay the trip, she's a chance in the Cup,'' he said.
Zipping produced the eyecatching Cups trial of the Mackinnon.
Douro Valley, the Caulfield Cup runnerup, pleased trainer Danny O'Brien with his solid sixth.
Maybe Better, a minor placegetter behind Delta Blues in last year's Melbourne Cup, also ran gamely for seventh.

Interesting thing i saw reading the form earlier, Sarrera's wet track form,
Heavy: 4; 4-0-0.
He's only ever won 6 races too, another win on slow.
If it pouring, and the track is terribly wet, could be the $100 horse that goes well, there's usually one of them.

Interested to hear how everyone thinks The Fuzz will go in the cup, especially now that the track is now a wet one. Seemed to have everything go its way in the Saab quality on sat, and hit the lead in the straight, all but for only a few seconds, then pegged back by sculptor. Personally i still think it is a good shot at the cup, has drawn well in barrier 11. Thoughts anyone, and comments about its wet track form will be much appreciated.

His wet track form is ok but he really should have been getting past Sculptor if he was gunna win a MC.
