Game is different now I think 2007 team would struggle to play the type of game that would work for them now.
BUT ..If we had a month or so to retrain them to a 2013 game style, well, no contest .With GAJ Scarlett, Milburn, Ling and the other guys in their prime.

Disagree with that. He had a great year in 2007, but Taylor's a better player to me.

I think everyone had their say about this on another thread just recently, and everyone agreed to differ. But I'm getting out before they bring Graham into it.

For me, 2007 - at the moment.

The current crop just seem to lack that total killer instinct that 2007 & 2008 had to just pound their opposition into the dust.
It ultimately gave them a virtual 3 goal lead before the ball was bounced every week because the opposition would be packing themselves before even stepping on to the field.

Not many teams are capable of being so far up in a grand final with the result beyond doubt before half time & going on in the second half the way they did with a foot on the throat of the opposition.

But I say "at the moment" because there is a lot left to play out this season & that could change!!

Lol, on a somewhat un-realated note, I was just going back through our last few grand final entries in wikipedia & was having a look at the 2008 entry - they have an "aftermath" section which documents the rushed behind rule changes as well as the "Kennet curse", which has been updated to reflect our 10-0 unbeaten run.

Kudos to whoever put in the alteration submission!! :D

Hi guys and gals and ... well, yeah.

I watched the 07 flag on the weekend to remind myself where it all started, and I was away on work and bored...

Imagine Chappy 07 lining up on Boris 2013. Or Chappy 2013 lining up on Dasher 2007. The permutations are manyfold and the possible gamedays almost endless. Forwards better today, backs break even, mids 07 win, rucks win in 07. Depth better in 13, more game plans in 13.

The backs break even? Can't see it personally - Cats in '07/'08/'09 had the best backline I've ever seen. The skills were sublime, the instinct in themselves and each other beyond belief. It was also the toughest, meanest, hungriest back six - the opposition went home very sore every week.

I still think our current defence needs to tighten up if we're to go all the way this year - we're not as feared as much, and goals are easier to come by for the opposition.

Yep - and our midfield was defensively a lot better as well.

The other advantage that our back 6 from 2007 had over pretty much every other team in the comp is that they were all high-possession winners who were good by hand and foot. Lonergan - don't get me wrong, great shutdown defender - isn't the springboard that Scarlett ever was.

I was comparing them to the competition for that year, a direct comparison would result in the 2013 team being better.
Why? Every year clubs improve, how would the 07 side go against the zoning of today's game? The zoning that in its infancy dismantled that gameplan?
2013 vs 2007 directly would win by several goals.

Which is exactly what I was getting at. Having watched 07 GF again on the weekend, I am not sure they would win, hence the OP. I think the tough old heads and mental strength of today would wear down even the young 07 guns, and win by a couple.

That could work.
