Obviously Richo will take one of those positions, but we have a problem at the other.
Riewoldt is probably still too small...hell be coming good as richo retires.

Pattison is a realistic option, but I dont think we'll use him forward much.

Polak played forward a bit forward this year, but should be CHB next year.

Putt and Gourdis will be too inexperienced and possibly small next year.

Which leaves Schulz and Hughes. Who will get the second tall forward role?
Personally i hope we play Schulz and Riewoldt as a third tall.
But Wallace will probably opt for Pattison and simmonds as the third tall, otherwise we might be overly tall.

Who should get the nod for CHF: Riewoldt, Schulz, Pattison or Hughes?

I reckon Hughes can take the next step in 2008. Has alot of talent and he'll be pushed by competition from Reiwoldt who is super keen. This will also be great for Schultz who is still only 22 and who still could be anything. I think we will see these 3 players compete for CHF and we'll see 2 goals per game from any one of these 3 players. We saw it in 2007. We have a big future :thumbsu:

would like to see polak at chb, and if richo plays at half forward schulz can take ff. hughes is a big possibility as he should be ready to go next year, he would be my preferred option at chf if the cho takes ff. most likely plough will use a number of options and i doubt if we will see each player assigned a spot and be left there for the whole year. patto and simmo should be rotated through the forward line but more to try and create a mismatch that to actually hold down a key position. dont be surprised to see lids played out of the square quite a bit too.

I agree quite often talls mature 25plus not always the case though:thumbsu:

This is pretty much how I see it too. With Richo still the dominant player I don't think we will play a traditionally structured forward line. Expect to see a lot of Simmonds and Pattison rotating as talls; Deledio, Brown and Tambling rotating from the midfield as primary shorter, quick, marking options; Pettifer in his current role; other midfielders rotating through creating the 'loose man' option. Very fluid and unpredictable. Schulz, Hughes and Reiwoldt will all get a crack (at the same spot) at some stage and only history will tell us who (if any) steps ups. You would like to think that they have all shown enough that one of them will make it eventually (although time might be starting to run short for Schulz and by all reports Hughes is in serious need of an attitude adjustment).

i would like to see lids play one out in the goal square and have him use his pace and lead out no backman will be able to keep up with him and play him in the middle for about 15-20 mins each quater so for his brake he can come into the forward line
use simmonds and richo in the forward line when lids is in the middle and use patto in the ruck stafford simmonds and richo worked well when we had stafford

Nowadays there is no real set positions. On Thursday night they get named in positions but on game day players rarely actually line up i tose positions.

Anyhow the way I see it I would like to see the following:
Richo - tall forward
Schulz - tall forward
Riewoldt/Hughes - rotating 3d tall (depending on form one will play at AFL level the other at Coburg)

Pettifer - mid sized forward
Deledio - mid sized forward when resting from playing onball
Morton - mid sized foward

Brown - small med forward
Tambling - small med forward

Edwards - small forward
Cotchin - small forward

Leave Polak to play down back with Thursfield & McGuane as the other 2 tall backs. Bowden to play as a mid sized back which gives him the freedom to still create play but also gives him a break from playing on the big key forwards he has had to do for the last few years.

This would leave a group comprising of Raines, Newman, Connors, Polo, McMahon & King as the smaller running types out of the backline.

Gourdis & Putt would pretty much spend the year at Coburg unless either injury or form warranted them playing in the seniors.

Would Richo be better off in the square or at half forward? He'll be 33 next year. He does a heap of running at fullforward as it is. Will his career last longer playing him at full forward now? It would be better for our team to play him at half forward because players like Schultz will be able to demand the ball more and get more opportunities at full forward. I think Schultz is alot more suited to full forward than half forward. I think we should play lids in the pocket as a second full forward. Next season we should have this set up

FF Lids Schultz Brown
HF Connors Richo Pettifer

That's a deadly forward line and close to the best in the league. Lids and Schultz will be leading full forwards. Lids can easily kick 50 goals in a season with what he has shown so far. Schultz will finally get his spot at full forward and a full season could see 50 goals from him too. Brown will be deadly in the pocket with 50 goals. Connors will show his class at half forward and Richo and Petts will kick 40 each from half forward.

I've always thought Deledio could became a "Lloyd" type FF, but the question is wether he would have a greater impact in the middle? I'm not sure.
I tend to lean towards him laying as a permanent forward.

The Traditional FF CHF roles have changed it's more multiple options and rotations that are now the go.

With Brown leading and crumbing, Richo contesting, Shulz, Hughes and deledio roaming up to the wings our forward line looks potent, add to that Pattison and Simmonds as other marking options then Tambling as another crumber all looks good.

Interestingly, watched the replay of the rd21 Essendon match last night and we pretty much used this setup (minus Morton and Tambling with Reiwoldt instead of Hughes). Polak and Rewioldt also switched between defense when Polak rucked and Pattison occasionally was part of the forward mix.

Everybody took turns at being the 'hitup' players who lead out to the wing and half forward to link up with defense and midfield. We really had no small attackers, just talls and mediums. The constant rotations had Essendon in disarray regularly with mismatches everywhere.

Schulz and Richo had 11 shots on goal between them for 1 goal, but both were very effective in assists. Bizarrely, our midfield and defense contributed more goals than the attack (midfield/defense kicked 9 of our 17 goals), BUT, if the attack had kicked straight we would have won the game by a very big margin.

I think we will see this attack more often in '08...an expanded version of 'Terry's Triangle' where our only genuine crumbers are midfielders running on to the ball at full speed to support a forward line full of dangerous marking players.

During the year, Jade Rawlings said that he expected Lids to play as a forward for most of his career, with short stints on the ball.
I hope he does, because good small forwards ala. Brown, are, IMO, more important than good midfielders, because theirs so many good midfielders.
And forwards are generally the match winners.
My 2008 forward structure would be something like:

FF: Brown Richo Deledio

HF: Morton Schulz Petiffer,

with Tambling, Cotchin and other mids moving through, plus Pattison moving forward if we need more talls.
But I still have doubts on Schulz...he hasnt done *much* in his 5 seasons, but because he shows something in one or two games a year, we hold onto him.
If Schulz doesnt work, I hope that either Riewoldt comes in, or Graham comes in and Patto moves to CHF.

But their is a bit of doubt on our forward line for 2 years time when Richo's gone...I think Riewoldt wil make it, but Im not sure if any of the bunch we've got now will turn into the "Superstar" tall forward that most good sides have. (Although WCE and Geelong didnt)

not a lot of defensive pressure in that forward line

our midfield and defence need much more work before worrying about who we can fit up forward, theirs no point having guns inside 50 if you cant get the ball to them

I'll try again. I've been banned so long I forgot how to post. Carlton Heat Supporters got me again.

Backs : Mcguane , Bowden , McMahon

H/Backs : King , Thustfield , Newman (Deputy Vice Capt)

Centre : Edwards , Tuck , Tambling

H/Forwards : Petifer , Polak (Captain) , Conners

Forwards : Brown , Richo , Deledio

Ruck : Simmonds , R/Rover : Jackson Rover : Foley (Vice Capt)

Bench : Pattison , Cotchin , Morton , Raines

Emerg : Rance , Tivendale , Polo , Coughlan , Johnson ,

With King , McMahon , Newman and Tambling bringing the ball in the forward line so quick we'll need to be Tall so with Richo , Polak and Deledio up there and Petifer capable of 6 - 10 Marks a game and Conners taking speckys or feeding Edwards and Tambling on the run we will score alot of points.

We seriously have a very very potent attacking team. I'm predicting we will finish 5th or 6th this week.

Finals Football here we come Tigers.

And the actual captain for 08 didn't even make the starting 22??

TT0055, posting a side like that will get you banned from our own mods for stupidity LOL! I am also confused with the prediction of finishing 5th or 6th this week!

Not straight up Mad Tiger but only because of injury , by round 6 they will be there I'd like to think.I'm not sure at who's expense though who would you take out to put them in. This is the first year we have depth its pretty exciting isn't it.

That's the breaks for Johnson I might be able to sqeeze him onto the back flank at some point during the year but we'll have to give the young guns a go first.
