2008 phantom draft

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

We got a priority pick at the end of round 1 for failing to win 5 games.
So it seems. It's just that CAR got pick 1 priority last year for failing to win 8 games in two seasons (which demitriou vowed wouldn't change in about June), pick 17 priority for less than 5 wins in '06 and a priority first rounder in 2 of the previous 4 years for less than 5 wins in a season. I'm having a little trouble keeping up. Luckily it's been CAR the whole time. If it had been mixed amongst other teams, some could feel hard done by.
Anyway this isn't the topic. Sorry. Carry on!!!

I’ve decided to have a crack at one of these phantom drafts. But I wanted to do it a little differently. So I’ve completed my draft judged on the fact that Melbourne is concerned to have missed out on Warnock. This is not necessarily the way I think it will go, but a different direction. So please be gentle. I’ve gone 1st Round and Priority picks.

Pick No.1 – Melbourne – Nick Natanui 197cm 85kg.

Melbourne gives in to the need of a specialist ruckman after missing out on Warnock. But they also give in to the most marketable player in the draft. This guy has a massive profile for an 18 year old kid and Melbourne will plan to splatter his face on as much club advertising as possible for the next decade. Natanui is a massive risk as he isn’t at all a certainty to become a great player and there will always be the “go home factor”. The local boy Tyrone Vickery will be considered highly as he has the bonus to play forward, stay in Victoria and be a greater chance to make the top grade. Of course there is Jack Watts too. But the $$$ factor will get the big Western Australian across the line.

Pick No.2 – West Coast – Daniel Rich 183cm 83kg

West Coast get their man. Although their decision is made a hell of a lot easier with Melbourne choosing Natanui. This is a fairly self explanatory selection. The perfect addition for the promising future midfield already comprising Ebert, Masten and Selwood.

Pick No.3 – Fremantle – Jack Watts 194cm 85kg

Fremantle would have been disappointed missing out on the two Western Australian boys. They also would have considered selecting Vickery here as they have lost Warnock. But the opportunity for a gun KP forward doesn’t come around very often. With Tarrant coming towards the end and Pavlich not getting any younger, this isn’t the worst time to stock up on a gun tall forward. Eventhough it may not be the immediate need.

Pick No.4 – Port Adelaide – Tyrone Vickery 200cm 86kg

Port are in desperate need for a quality ruckman and Vickery is their solution. Vickery has great ruck skills, forward skills, mobility, sticky hands and can find the ball around the ground. What more can you ask for? He is probably my favourite player of the draft and will be very good for Port. Local Hamish Hartlett would obviously be looked at also.

Pick No.5 – Essendon – Michael Hurley 192cm 92kg

With Mal Michael retired and Dustin Fletcher almost down and out, Hurley suits Essendons needs perfectly. You’d expect him to play senior footy next year and will look nice in the Bombers back half with the developing Ryder and Pears.

Pick No.6 – Carlton – Jack Ziebell 188cm 84kg

Carlton will go best available here. Hartlett would be considered but Ziebell can be used as a very effective forward and you’d expect that would see him picked first. Ziebell is also a little bit different to the players in their existing gun midfield. He is tall and has sublime skills. A really good pick up.

Pick No.7 – Brisbane – Hamish Hartlett 182cm 74kg

There is no way Brisbane will let this guy slip any further. He is way too good to be sliding to pick No.7. Voss will be more than happy to see him along side the likes of Black, Power, Johnstone and Dalziell.

Pick No.8 – Richmond – Steele Sidebottom 182cm 79kg

This is where it starts to get a little more difficult. Richmond is in need of a quality ruckman, but I really don’t think there is anything available worth using the No.8 selection for. So I’ve gone with best available. There is no harm in the Tigers stocking up the midfield stocks further. The smooth moving midfielder could become the perfect partner to Cotchin in years to come.

Pick No.9 – North Melbourne – Tom Swift 190cm 84kg

A lot of people like going the easy option and just automatically selecting Shaun McKernan at the Roos. The only way I can see the Roos picking McKernan here is if they plan on developing him as a CHB. McKernan is just a little bit too in-between to be a top 10 selection IMHO. North require midfielders with Harvey and Simpson getting on and I think they may take the massive risk in selecting Swift if his injury report stacks up. Admittedly, I’ve never seen Swift play. From what I’ve heard, he has the potential of a top 5 selection. Laidley would know that it is unlikely that one of the gun midfielders (Rich, Ziebell, Hartlett) would slip to pick No.9. An injury free Swift could be that star midfielder that he craves. If North were to take the safer option, I can see them going Robinson.

Pick No.10 – Adelaide – Lewis Johnstone 192cm 87kg

The Crows are in desperate need for a quality key forward. I can’t see them bypassing the local kid Johnstone. He is a bottom ager who is an attacking, aggressive forward with very strong hands. The only ways I can see them overlooking him is if there is a quality slider or he is already taken.

Pick No.11 – Collingwood – Nick Heyne 187cm 79kg

I’ve got this gut feeling that Collingwood are going to continue their tradition of nabbing Gippsland talent and picking the excitement machine Nick Heyne. He is a very damaging and exciting forward but I believe the Pies will develop him mainly as a midfielder who can go forward to do his thing occasionally. I think he has all the tools to be a fantastic midfielder and it surprises me that Gippy Power doesn’t play him there more often. I probably have him going a little high but it’s so hard to ignore the talent he possesses.

Pick No.12 – Sydney – Sam Blease 183cm 72kg

I’m not at all convinced that Blease is going to make a great player as he doesn’t get any where near the amount of disposals he should. But in saying that, he has great kicking skills and excellent speed which would appeal to the Swans as their midfield is quite inside and one paced. If he learns to get more of the pill, he will be a great pick up.

Pick No.13 – St Kilda – Mitch Robinson 188cm 77kg

I think the Saints will go best available here. Robinson has excellent all-round skills for a midfielder and he attracts plenty of the pill. His outstanding U18 Championships have really lifted his rating.

Pick No.14 – Western Bulldogs – Ayce Cordy 202cm 77kg

Cordy is expected to be picked here via the Father/Son rule. I have never seen him play, but from all the hype you’d expect someone to have a crack at him to ensure the Doggies take him 1st Round.

Pick No.15 – Hawthorn – Jordan Lisle 196cm 87kg

The Hawks still have a few holes to fill in their defence and picking Lisle will go a long way to fixing that. He can play both the attacking and tight defender. He can also be thrown forward and do a more adequate job. His role in the U18 Championships would have really caught the Hawks eye where he was named All Australian CHB.

Pick No.16 – Geelong – Jackson Trengove 196cm 77kg

Like Swift, Trengove is another player who has had to sit out most of the year due to injury. The Cats would be looking for the best available player and considering Trengove was a likely Top 10 chance before injury, they could well swoop. The Cats can afford to take a risk on an injured star as their list has no real weakness that needs urgent attention. With Scarlett, Milburn and Harley in/or getting close to their 30’s, Trengove could be a more than handy replacement down the track.

Priority Picks.

Pick No.17 – Melbourne – Aaron Cornelius 192cm 84kg

With Melbourne passing on Watts for Natanui, they can now pick up that KP forward they seriously lack. Cornelius is a go to forward who can take a great contested grab as well as present to the right areas. He tends to read the play well to get himself in the correct positions. If Melbourne gained Natanui and Cornelius to go with Cale Morton, the future will be looking much brighter.

Pick No.18 – West Coast – Chris Yarran 180cm 84 kg

I find it extremely difficult to judge where Yarran will go in the draft. He could go a lot higher, but I doubt he’ll get past West Coast’s 2nd pick. The Eagles would be ecstatic to gain a second gun Western Australian. West Coast really lacks a crumbing small forward who also creates great defensive pressure. He could be the Cyril Rioli of next year. The other great thing about Yarran is that he can have an impact in the midfield similar to that of Shaun Burgoyne. I doubt that will happen straight away at AFL level, but he will develop.

There we go. How goes that look to everyone? Like I said earlier, please be as kind as possible. If there are any mistakes, feel free to correct me too.

Well done to the guy above! ^^^
I just dont like post replying to a long post :)

Well.. I made one; hopefully better then last time.
I am thinking outside the square.. and I know that Carlton fans wont be happy
1) Melbourne: Nic Natinui
Jack Watts was certainly locked in for me as the top draft pick but Nic has made a late surge and got the top pick for me. At nearly 200 cm tall, he is hard to beat at the ruck contests due to his specialty of his big leap. He also has a fast pace, tackles fantastic (these two relate as he can run and tackle from behind which he does a lot), not the best kick but good hand skills (including marking, tap work and handballing). Jeff White, being Melbourne’s best ruckmen, was no longer wanted at the club. With him gone, this gives Nic more of a chance of becoming the top draft pick. The only downside of him, which unfortunately is a big one, he doesn’t have the best football brains; meaning he can’t find his way around the ground very well. He ends up with low possessions at end of games due to his ability to not find the ball easily.

2) WCE: Daniel Rich
With big Nat not available any longer to the WCE, they will choose the talent of Daniel Rich. He has a huge kick, not only that’s a good thing but it is more then never accurate, even if it is 50 metres. He can go up forward, but doesn’t seem to dominate as much as he does in the midfield, but he can be dangerous because of his lovely kick. It wouldn’t surprise me if they went the tall mobile forward jack Watts, but with McKinley turning into a good young forward, LeCras getting into some form, Lynch being their best forward and young Josh Kennedy yet to play a full season due to his injuries, it may be a tough decision. Although the Eagles focused on using their early picks on midfielders last year (Ebert and Masten), they will still go Rich. Ebert and Masten were chosen to replace the side from Judd (left to go back to Victoria) and Cousins (banned from the AFL for 2 years because of taking drugs) they will pick Rich to replace Kerr (probably leaving as the club don’t want him and he isn’t happy at WCE).

3) Freo: Jack Watts
The tall forward who was expected to go number one will fall to Fremantle. Not exactly what they will be looking for but they may be surprised that he dropped this low so they might be keen to pick him up. Jack leads into the right spots and isn’t afraid to put his body on the line. On a quite game (which rarely happens) he still hardly leaves a game with no scoring shots. With Pavlich only got 4 years maximum left in him, Murphy being traded or delisted, Farmer leaving and a few youngsters coming in (who don’t look handy to become the main target up forward), Watts may be the way to go.
4) Power: Tyrone Vickery
The best ruckman/forward of this competition for me. I love Nic in the ruck, but his ability to not find the ball in a downfall. Vickery finds the ball well, bet big Nic in some ruck contests, fantastic hands, wonderful body work, beautiful kick and a lot more. There are really no downsides to Vickery. He has pretty good pace which is good around the ruck contests and leading for the ball in the goal square. With Lade in his 30’s, rumors Deluca getting delisted, Brogan maybe leaving (doubt it), and young Giles retiring because of injury, they need a ruckman. With Tredreas career maybe over, he could rotate in the forward line.

5) Essendon: Michael Hurley
The best defender in the champs at the moment. He has excellent communication skills, which is handy for a key backman, quite tall, normal pace and he has a great long kick. All these are handy to become a good backman, and this is why he is one. Essendons weakness is their backline with Fletcher soon leaving and Michael retiring, they have no-one left. Michael looks the best available for them.

6) Carlton: Shaun McKernan
With so much depth in this year’s draft, Carlton doesn’t need to aim for a midfielder straight away. I don’t know why they would go for a midfielder since they have so many young ones coming through. Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Bentick, Walker, Armfield, Browne, Pfeiffer, Carrazzo, Bannister, Hadley and there is still some aging ones like Stevens and Judd. I really don’t see why they should aim for a midfielder so they should go a backman/forward. McKernan is a great player with sensational skills. A bit underrated. Early this year he was expected to go top 10, now people are putting him as late as mid 2nd round. Will work well with the likes of Fevola, Fisher and Betts. With only one real target being Fevola up forward, they may need to use this pick on a forward/backman, McKernan looks the goods. Although Carlton are screaming for no more young ruckmen, I would love to see McKernan go to Carlton, because of he can play back and forward.

7) Lions: Nick Suban
With the likes of Brisbane’s midfield (Dalziell, Power, Mcdonald, Johnstone, Notting, Selwood, Adcock and Rischitelli), forward line (Brown, Clarke, Bradshaw and Hooper) and their ruck (Clarke, Luenburger, Tippett and Charman) the Lions only have to focus on one other department, being their backline. With young Merrett coming through, and not much else, they need to get a young defender. Suban who has a wonderful kick, can easily get you out of trouble, not real good speed but loves to dodge tackles, seems the best available.

8) Richmond: Jack Ziebell
I can see this guy is the yellow and black. Ziebell is heavily overrated for me. Just the way he goes about his footy is great. He can play in all positions (midfield, back, forward) but midfield being his best position. Can kick goals, so when you need a forward to lift, place him down there. Good long kick, great hands, but not the best speed. He isn’t easy to tackle but he doesn’t have the best pace. He would work well with Cotchin and sometimes he can squeeze in the backline/forward line when they need some help.
9) North: Chris Yarran
With Nathan Thompson underperforming, Grant leaving, and their best midfielder Harvey having to be played as a forward (still like him there but he is more damaging in the middle) they will need a replacement. The closest you can probably get from the two of them is Chris Yarran. A young talented footballer who is overrated in my eyes, although he will be picked top 10. I wouldn’t be surprised if they got someone like Hartlett/Robinson/Sidebottom, but I can see them going for a forward type player.

10) Adelaide: Hamish Hartlett
Perfect fit for the Crows. Although we need a forward type player, we will aim for a midfielder. Hamish, whom is the best available, never gives up. Adelaide do seem to give up sometimes, the players get worn out (Collingwood elimination final 2008 is an example), so Hartlett looks like he could be the one who steps up. Personally my favourite in the draft, and I may be being a bit over the top of putting Hartlett this low, but I think he will fall. I have heard much news and people think he will fall to around the number 10 mark.

11) Saints: Mitch Robinson
I personally don’t know what Saints are aiming for in this draft. The greatest legend to play AFL football, Robert Harvey, is set to retire at the end of the season. He will never be replaced but they will need someone to take over his spot. With Kozi and Milne getting into some form, the really don’t need a key forward. Also Riewoldt has been in Brownlow form the last half of the season. Sam Fisher has also been amazing this season. Brendon Goddard, the tough nut he is, whom can play backline/midfield (personally like him back), is the key to their backline when he plays there. Hudghton is turning into a great defender, and Gram, who has quite good speed off the mark, runs them out of defense. There ruck looks set, and so does their midfield, but they will probably go with Robinson, the best midfielder available. Robinson is a ball magnet, puts his body on the line and can take a nice mark.
12) Bulldogs: Ace Cordy
With a team probably already putting a bet on Cordy, the Bulldogs will have to go with him here.

13) Collingwood: Steele Sidebottom
Besides Hartlett, he would have to be my favourite no doubt. He loves his footy so he never comes into a game being slack. With Collingwood probably aiming for a midfielder they will go Sidebottom. He doesn’t have a lot of pace, but uses the ball very well. He can take a good mark, and usually never has a bad day, which is the reason why he is so high in the draft. He doesn’t put his body on the line a lot, but he is a very good player who reads the play well.

14) Sydney: Jackson Trengove
With O’Keefe starting to play a midfielder role, Davis not getting any game time (probably going to be delisted) and Barry Hall’s career soon may be over, Sydney need to aim for a forward. Although I don’t really like the shape of their backline, I think they should use their first pick on a forward and their second on maybe a small forward (an example being Sheahan). Trengove would easily be in the top 10, maybe higher if it wasn’t for his injuries. He is a very tall forward/back/ruckman who has good skills and good pace, which is great for a tall. If Sydney doesn’t want to use him as a forward, they can simply use him as a backman. He looks like he would slip in nice at Sydney.

15) Hawthorn: Sam Blease
I would love to see Suban drop to Hawthorn, but I can’t see it happening. Although I rate him high, I think he should be a top 10 prospect. If he slips down to Hawthorn, it would be great as that is exactly what they need. Anyway, Blease would probably be the best available around this mark. Sam is a very talented player who I think could turn into a nice defender that works hard and runs (eg. Nathan VanBerlo) People may disagree but I could see him turning into one. Has great pace, which is great because he also tackles well, so he tackles from behind a lot. Blease would be up much higher if he didn’t have slack games. Back to Steele Sidebottom, he doesn’t have slack games, which puts him higher in the draft. Personally I think Blease is a better player than Steele, but he has quite times during matches which Steele doesn’t have.

16) Geelong: Steve Hill
I really like this kid. Geelong has really nothing to aim for this year’s draft because of the depth of their team. Hill would be the best available in this phantom draft. He has wonderful speed and never stops trying. He runs all day long, tackles well, long good accurate kick and can play a forward role. I like him up forward, just because of his lovely long kick and his skills. I think Geelong will go him because he would be about the best available.

Why isn't Watts any chance to go interstate? He would do exactly what Dangerfield is doing now, keep playing TAC Cup while finishing year 12 in Melbourne. Don't think Watts would get a game anyway next year as he is still a little to lean.

Porps_is_HOT_loz is obviously confident of a Collingwood win on Saturday night!

Good read though, interesting that you think Sidebottom will get to #13, I'm not as confident.

No way in the world would we pass on Ziebell if he was available at our pick. No way, no how.

Brisbane always have a best available policy with their first pick, Ziebell meets that requirement, and also fills a need.

Dockers wouldn't take Vickery either. They aren't going to replace the Vic Metro ruckman who just walked out on them with another Vic Metro ruckman.

Even if they decided to go for a Vic Metro kid, they'd take Watts.

If Port were able to trade for say a Jon Griffin, is there a chance that is West Coast pick up Nick Nat at 2 that Freo after losing Warnock and not signing Griffin would take Vickery at 3 and let Rich slide thru to pick 4. Thats kind of what im hoping will happen anyway :D

RICH: Shaun McKernan(RU/KPB/F), Tom Lynch(UTL), Riley Milne(KPB): Draft Rating: 6/10

If Richmond get this ^, I will most Definitly shoot myself in the foot with a nail gun

i dont know how you call zieball heavily overrated porps_is_hot_loz. He is a under 16 Vic Country captain, Voted best player and MVP for the 2007/2008 AIS sqauad out of all their games in Perth and South Africa, Vic Country Represenative Under 18's bottom age 2008 and made All Australian 200 bottom age. he dominates TAC cup kicking 4/5 goals every game, taking around 10 marks per game and averages 20 + quality possessions per game as a bottom ager. He has the most accomplishments out of any player in this years draft so i dont understand how you call him heavily overrated
