2008 player numbers

Id say begley will ask for number 17 so he can be like kennelly and setanta. The irish players will probably want to make wearing 17 their own thing.

I think we are going a bit over the top. Why does every player that wears number 3 have to be a champion? I think the whole idea of retiring numbers is a bit silly. Give it too a young bloke or riska. I don't really care who gets it!

It is one of the great things about our game, how something as simple as a number on your back could mean so much.

Others who were at the Pride of the Lions dinner will probably recall Jamie Charman talk about how it was great learning about the others that had worn the number 19 before him, anyone who has been into a clubs dressing rooms feels the history when you see the lockers with the names of those who have worn the number before. I grew up playing cricket at for Footscray Cricket Club, and even us juniors used the same change rooms as the football club, and I used to sit there reading the numbers on the lockers, wondering what it would be like to play VFL footy. (And thinking how much better every Fitxroy player was!!)

Retiring the jumpers for a year is an awesome thing, and a great way to recognise the input that player may have had over an extended period of time. I would like to think that like St Kilda do, we should give the retiring player some say in who gets the number next.

I think we do ask our retired players on their preferences. Didn't get Sherman and Ryswyk (remember him?) get their numbers from their predecessors?

I don't think we asked for input from Akermanis or Michael though. Wonder why not.

In that light I can see Alby Proud slotting into Johnno's #2

Could we make the number three a Captains jumper similar to what Richmond do with number 17 and Port with the number 1? Just an idea but I think it would be a great way to honor the great man.

I know we would only need one captain to do this though. So it could be a year or two away from happening if it was a idea we would go for.

This has been my feeling since the day Vossy hung up the boots but others disagree. As much as players like Browny and Blacky are attached to their jersey numbers, I don't think they would mind starting a tradition by wearing the number 3. After 12 months, I still can't envisage any player wearing Vossy's number without some sort of significance attaching to it.

I am one to disagree. I think that promotes a mindset of filling other's shoes, when captains should be going about it their own way. Also I think there is a bit of prestige being a one number player. And let's not forget the difficulty commentators would have with 5 number 3s on the field.;)

But presumably that only happens for the next captain. The bloke who is captain in 20 years time isn't going to be filling the Voss shoes but it makes for a nice tradition. I actually think it could help cement someone as a leader as opposed to being a burden. You grow into the captaincy but there is a certain symbolism in taking over a jersey number that might assist that process.

That is true but I don't recall Tredrea or Johnson taking issue with the fact that their number was to change.

If there can be 3 Nathan Browns, then anything is possible.

Just on the captaincy thing again... does that mean we are left to four joint captains now that johnno left?
I still think that it should only be black and brown as co-captains...
Also wat number did johnstone where at melbourne he may want that number if possible?
And as to the retiring the jumpers i think johnsons (2) and vossy's (3) should be retired as they are both captains or were both captains so they should be let aside for a bit i think and i think also that begley will stick with a number in the 40's.
Adcock to make it his own agreed to and rischa to go for a lower number are my thoughts

I actually like what the Hawks have done with their rookies. I believe when Clarkson came on board he said that tne rookies had to earn the lower numbers.

If working out what players get what numbers is our biggest issue then things are looking up at the lions. I still play footy myself and I don't care what number I wear. History is history but at the end of the day I don't care who wears no 3! Life is pretty simple if the best way to honour vossy is to the retire his number!!

16 - I don't think that spot will be open;)

This initially might look bazaar, if so, just keep squinting your eyes, until the pixelated image fades to reveal my logic…

Jonathan Brown to continue the Fitzroy link will inherit CJ’s #2, his father Brian also wore this at Fitzroy.
This allows Travis to claim his Melbourne worn #16 but more historically his grandfather Norm also wore #16 at Fitzroy.
Matthew Leuenberger to be honoured with Vossys #3, this will also clear the link with his WA and the #23 he wore in the U18’s.
Leppa's 23 can then be offered to our next up and coming backman, Josh Drummond.
And the #4 to our 1st draft pick, I’m hopeful it could be Cyril Rioli.

The new draftees can then be offers the remaining.

Oh, one more, depending on the arrival of our late Irish male.
Colm may wish to inherit a lower # and hand over #46 to Pierce. Or maybe give Hanley, Hadleys #14.

And then we could sign Lance Whitnall, and give him #00...

Nah, I would have thought his brother Shane, would be more suited to the envious green colour of #00, think his knees in better nick too.

Agreed, most important part of the jumper is making sure it has been washed (not always guarenteed in the country Victorian leagues) and that it fits.

Though the Fitzroy seemed to go with 1 for captains.
