Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

I think it is time people lay off melbournes young tallent as it is obvious that no matter how good they are as young players are they are really up against it, there is a problem at Melbourne with its development and it is much bigger than Watts, Trengove, Tapscott, Cook, ect tallent.
I would argue that if Watts or some of their other young tallent was developed at Geelong or Sydney they would be seen as awesome picks.
So stop the Watts bashing in this thread.

I'll go a top 10.

1. Naitanui
2. Beams
3. Hanneberry
4. Ziebell
5. Hartlett
6. Sidebottom
7. Rockliff
8. Shuey
9. Sloane
10. Zaharakis

The top 10 in this draft is impossible to pick, the order changes every few months and there is just so much great tallent.
So many different types of mids aswell, looking back it was a awesome draft to select the exact type of mid your team was after, Zaharakis was exactly what Essendon needed and was lucky enough to get their hands on him.

When I was collating my list, thought to myself, this could turn out to be as good as that stellar 01 draft. Better spread of top end talent but maybe not as many individual accolades that '01 did.

I think it will be better in terms of depth - and just as many players who could be really consistent, high level performers for a while.

Maybe no one to the levels of Swan, Ablett or Judd - but plenty more around that level just below.

Carlton wouldn't change their first pick. Amazing how many people still doubt Yazz's talent and commitment when he's kicked 13 goals. Compares favourably to Garlett's return of 15. Yet to move into the midfield and get stats in the thirties, but he's silky enough to burn you with 20 touches. Wants to play up the ground.
So yanno.....kind of reasonable to rank him behind midfielders that have.

Who out of this draft could we see as a brown low medalist? Perhaps Shuey? Zaka? Beams if he returns to his ore injury form? Bartlett if the Power become a powerhouse perhaps?

What do Motlop and Taylor Hunt need to do to be rated? They've been very, very good (top 10 players, arguably top 5) for the league leaders.

Motlop's averaging almost 20 touches and 1.6 goals a game and is Geelong's go to man for explosive pace like Jetta for Sydney (1.8 goals and 15 touches a game last year).

Hunt's probably been the league's best tagger this year, probably has the best defensive game of anyone from this draft and now has the ability to hurt opponents going the other way. Pity about the injury.

I'm not saying they're top 5 or even top 10 but even in such a good draft surely they're in the best 20. Watts? Redden? Balantyne? Garlett? No thanks I'd take these 2 every time ahead of those guys.

Ahead of Jack Redden? Kidding yourself. Could justify it for the other three though.

Hartlett, Beams, Shuey, Zaha definitely.

Ziebell will be a player, no doubt in my mind.

Hanneberry as well.

Rockliff potentially could have an outstanding season where he gets the gong.

You never know with Naitanui and also some of the bigger guys who've been very inconsistent - unlikely to win Brownlows but could well be multiple AAs (safe to say that will happen with NN) and 2001 doesn't really have those AA KPP's.

To be honest Footy Smarts, these boys have been good for a short period of time. The players who have been good for just as long have had a far greater impact in that time.

No doubting they are very good players but feel a defensive midfielder (Taylor Hunt) and a kid in his breakout year (Steven Motlop 6 games in) probably shouldnt be in the same class as best & fairest winners (Zaharakis, Rockliff), All Autralians (Nic Nat, Beams), a Rising star Winner (Hannebury) or premiership stars (Sidebottom, Beams).

Id agree with those guys you mentioned. It seems to go to the guys who run and carry, play inside & out, and kick goals consistently hence my opinion of Shuey, Zaka and Hartlett being the most likely. Beams is also in this class but he needs to get back on the park first.

Im not as sold on the KPP's as you are ThePuppetMaster.

Of the notable KPP's taken none are really warming the heart completely (yet). Michael Hurley (#5), perhaps the rapidly developing Hawthorn whipping boy Ryan Schoenmakers (#15) perhaps. Dogs duo Jordan Roughead (#32) and Liam Jones (#32) could surprise a bit? Apart from that no one is really winning me over just yet.

I think Davis, Trengove, Vickery all have potential as well.

Who knows what will happen with Watts, with Neeld indicating he may play key forward when he returns from injury.

Not sold on Shoey.

Not sold on Lynch, but he did just kick 10.

Jones and Roughead look solid.

You sound surprised?

Tom Rockliff won the B&F not last year, the year before, same as Zaka did for us.

you missed Trengove as a B&F winner, what are your thought about him?

History is not on your side.

Go and look at the drafts in the last 15 years. First round draft picks who've had less than memorable careers - How many have changed clubs and suddenly found form. And the clubs with so called good development systems have plenty of first round failures. It's merley a matter of selecting the wrong player.

Very solid draft this one. Couldn't be any more pleased with the player Jack Ziebull is becoming, especially after 2 broken legs. Wouldn't swap him for anyone in this draft.

maybe you are right, but in Melbournes case how is it that Grimes, Trengove, Frawley, Blease, Mckenzie, Tapscott, Sylvia ect have actually become worst players over time instead of kicking on? this doesn't happen at other clubs like it does at Melbourne.
