Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Yeah - just noticed a few things wrong. Removed the garbage.

I thought it was a fairly good attempt considering the difficulty of factoring in potential vs performances in the one list - which you tried to do.

I think we can all agree that this looks to be a really strong draft, with many superstars in the next few years to have belonged to this class.
BTW never realised how well port seemed to have done out of this draft. Broadbent, Hartlett and Trengove all look like theyll be really key players for them.

These 3 clubs would be absolutely over the moon with the double whammy that they landed.

Collingwood- Sidebottom and Beams.
WCE- NicNat and Shuey
Essendon- Hurley and Zaharakis

All of them would be inside the top 10 or dozen of names picked- stellar drafting really.

I have no complaints with the players we selected, particularly where we selected them from.

There are so many terrific players from this draft, it's hard to pick a top 20 let alone 10.
The Collingwood, Essendon and West Coast Pairs (first 2 picks) are obviously great and you'd take any of them.
Hartlett may well be the classiest of all the mids if his body stays together.
Neither Melbourne or Richmond appear to have done well at this stage but that can change quickly. Vickery has showed a bit in the past to say he can play.
From our point of view Hill and Ballantyne with our first 2 is a pass. They are both pretty handy on their day and I think Hill will be a star. He's starting to show what he's capable of as he puts on muscle and endurance.
That we also got Suban, Clarke, DeBoer, Broughton and Pearce makes it a pretty decent outing for us.

I've seen him play as good a game as that before. Even if there aren't a huge number, the signs have always been there. Clear as day. I follow Port very closely, being my 2nd favourite team. He's not really that type of player though I guess, I wouldn't say he shirks a contest.

There was only one port fan calling for him to be dropped.

And I think his hardness is underrated. Definitely not his issue. Issue would probably be his fitness to play a whole game in the middle.

I think some people forget how little football he's played. Now he's stringing some games together and is starting to get some consistency.

It favours players who spike rather than grind. For example BOG would be worth 10 below average games.

They work on powers of 3 from original selection.

1 ^ = < multiple of 3 from original selection.
2 ^ = 3 < x < 9
3 ^ = > 9

Unfortunately, Watts cannot improve from selection 1, therefore he is measured harshly on this index. He would need to be top 9 to go down to 2 ^ and top 3 to go down to 1.

Watts' 2011 was quite good. As the graph indicates. Looks to be having an even better 2012. I'd expect him to push up towards a top 10 selection by the end of his career.

Have a look at his game tonight. Hawthorn went after him as they do before the opening bounce, and intimidated him. Look closely at his attack on the ball. He will never be the best of the 2008 draft. Might become a nice outside midfielder in time, great kick

People said the same about Hill but he's adjusted to being the number 1 punching bag for the opposition. Takes a strong fitness base and supreme determination to go with the natural talent. I imagine it's quite a shock to the system when these kids first step up to the big time and find someone like Ling or Crowley or Sewell following their every step, punching them in the guts, sledging them, pinching, grabbing. Only the strong survive. If Hartlett has the G&D to match the class he will be fine.

Good post, and it's something that's very interesting with young players, seeing if they can overcome it.
Dahlhaus has been getting tagged this year, after teams realised he is involved in the majority of our scoring shots. Im really looking forward to watching him deal with it, and seeing how he goes.

Who i would take in order ignoring position. Keep in mind this is not who's performed the best so far but who i think will be the best over their career so things like attributes and ceiling are important.

1. Shuey: Elite midfield attributes, inside and outside, kicks goals, uses both feet, breaks lines.
2. Sidebottom: Beautiful kick who will rack it up.
3. Naitanui: Will be the best ruckman in the competition but won't reach his potential.
3. Hurley: Will get it all together eventually.
4. Sloane: Could be an all round freak mid.
5. Zaharakis: Don't think he will ever be quite elite but very good.
6. Beams: I just think he lacks pace/kicking ability which will mean his hurt factor won't be as high as some of the others.
7. Redden: Will be a Big clearance winner.
8. Hartlett: Could become the best mid in this draft.
9. Watts: I actually think he will eventually be a good player but not as a KPF im predicting loose man in the backline or KPD.
10. Yarran: Don't think he will ever be a mid but will be an AA rebounding defender.

Others that just miss out.
Ziebell, Rich, Trengrove, Hill in that order.

It never showed up before his injury, can't imagine it will show up after.

Yarran will be just another failed top 10 draft pick, one of far too many for the Blues.

Beams is a better kick than Sidebottom which surprises me you think that. Beams can kick 50m + on both feet and is far more penetrating, Sidebottom struggles dropping the ball short on 30-40m kicks. Beams is also faster than Sidebottom so the two things you are questioning him about he is actually good at compared to rusty. Sidebottoms biggest asset is his tank and always has been, he is just starting understand how to use it to the best of his ability.

Agree with this, Sidebottom rarely makes mistakes... but Beams is more damaging.

Lets see how his class carrys him when he has to play on or in front of the ball, HB isn't an overly hard position, very talented player no doubt, but form across HB wont cut the mustard against some of the guys from that draft.

Sidebottom stands up in finals, many believe he should have won the norm smith in 2010 and has been very consistant, he's no1 currently IMO but i don't think he'll stay there, lots of good KPPs from that draft who havn't peaked yet, and Hill will climb the ladder again.
