Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Yep, that's why we won against Essendon, Geelong (nearly twice) and even beat North, who were unlucky to lose to the top sides. We're a young side, inconsistency is to be expected, but there's scope for improvement.

If things went your way last season, you could have been in a top 4 position. But you are a bottom 8 side according to the ladder. It's not always the literal meaning that counts. Sides will be very wary of North next season, and they have every reason to be.

If Leuenberger didn't go down in the final minutes against Carlton, we could have been in finals too. Funny game AFL, it changes every year and that's what exciting.

Quit being childish. They thrashed us at Etihad.

How is saying we beat them childish?

Sacked your legendary coach, a mess off the field and 5 players just walked out. It's great to be positive in the off season as a reality check is not too far away.

What has that got to do with my post...?

Yeah - you said we finished in the bottom 8. You are wrong.

Oh turn it up mate, you finished equal 10th along with Adelaide and Brisbane, ergo bottom 8.

Sacked a legendary coach, okay I'll give you that one. Mess off the field, sure but we're making strides in that, including getting Lethal back onto the board. 5 players walking out, only 1 was a real loss.

Not sure what you're trying to prove with this argument, or it's just that school holidays have started. You're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now.

Ok so you know we didn't finish in the bottom 8 but was close enough to say we did - even though we didn't?

I actually think this daft discussion can be brought back to the topic of the thread a little bit.

I think part of what Wild Bill saw of the Lions last season was these long, frustrating periods of uncompetitiveness during games, that cost us wins against Adelaide, West Coast and Carlton, and made us look outright embarassing against Western, North and Collingwood. But these were mostly a feature of the first half of the season, and a large part of the problem was a lack of genuine leaders. Brown was battling his aging body, Adcock was battling poor form, Merrett seemed to be battling some form of psychosis. Black was pretty much constantly injured.

In the second half of the season we were more consistently competitive, and that happened to be when Tom Rockliff was playing his absolute best footy. Even when we were struggling he kept us in the game, and brought in his teammates a little more.

Whether you rate him in the top 5 of that draft, or whatever, I think if Brisbane could take their pick of that group of players they'd take him, because he's the man they need right now.

Predicted finish? Somewhere between 8-10.
J Brown will need to wind the clock back. You have had a great draft but need to rebuild the list and add to the good kids you have. I just can't see you kicking enough goals in enough games to get near top 8.

Browny is going to play in the goal square this year. We've got plenty of candidates for the CHF spot

If the draft was re done there is no way in hell Brisbane would take Rockliff ahead of everyone else in the draft.

Yep. He might be in that 5-10 range.

Naitanui, Hannebery & Beams are comfortably (ie. without even blinking) better players at this stage. Ziebell, Zaharakis, Hurley, Sidebottom, Hartlett and others could be argued.

Before I get pinged on the Zaha & Hurley, one has won a B&F in a finals team and the other has had to battle injuries but I obviously know a lot more about those two than other players.

Why? The post I quoted said Brisbane would take Rockliff ahead of the mentioned group of players. They wouldn't.

We would take him in a heartbeat. He has been excellent for the club not only on the field, but also off the field. He is a great clubman and will be captain very soon, possibly even this coming year.

Take the emotion out of it and try to see that on draft day if the recruiters knew exactly how good a player was going to be up until this point they would all be sacked if they took Rockliff at 1.

Yeah and I'm pretty happy with Jake Melksham on and off the field but I'd take Nat Fyfe over him. /same logic

Rockliff finished equal 6th in the Brownlow despite being wasted at HF for a third of the season. Brisbane were a much better side when he was moved back into the middle full time. Other players are more damaging with the ball but he makes good decisions and the sheer amount of ball he gets has hurt factor in itself. He deserves to be mentioned with anyone in this draft. I can accept that other supporters would prefer other players but to think that Rockliff should not be discussed with the likes of Beams or Hannebery is being blind to the facts.

Rich gets the tag at Brisbane followed by Hanley because both those guys can rip teams apart with more ball. You can't hold that against Rockliff though any more than you could hold it against Beams or Hannebery who are rarely if ever tagged themselves.

What's "facts" say that he deserves to get mentioned with beams?

So are you saying Brisbane would take Rockliff at 1? Cause that's the point I was arguing.

It's a tough one. He'd certainly be in contention for the top 5, but it's very hard to say. Would take him in a heartbeat at #7 where Brisbane's pick was in 2008, but only time will tell if he would have been picked.

Put it this way, if he played midfield every game this year, he would have contested Ablett and Selwood for the Brownlow. That's how much of an influence he has on the game.
