Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Hurley and Carlisle sought of read the play differently. Carlisle is far better at picking off long bombs into the forward line and going third man up and marking the ball but Hurley regularly leads his opponent to the ball and chops off leads better than Carlisle imo.

I don't think Hurley's ability to read the play as a forward is the reason he runs under the ball so often. It's more to do with only wanting to take chest marks and from what I've seen he seems to worry more about what his opponent is doing when he plays forward compared with when he plays as a defender as weird as that sounds.
I just can't see Hurley going back now Crameri and Gumby have moved on. You can't compare him with the best backs unless he can consistently play there at a high level. Until Daniher is ready to carry the forward line we may not see it for a while yet.

With all these threads I thought I would start one for 2008
Couldnt find another one so sorry if there is already one.
For me

This is only MY opinion

1 Nic Nat
2 Hurley
3 Sidebottom
4 Zaharakis
5 Shuey
6 Beams
7 Sloane
8 Redden
9 Hartlett
10 Rich

I will probably cop a bit a flack for having Zaka high but I think he is quite underrated coming of a B&F season and doesnt get much media attention along with Redden.

Shiels, Yarran and Trengove on the cusp.

You are absolutely on drugs if you honestly think Hurley is ahead of Beams, Sidebottom, Sloane and Hartlett.

And who was taking votes away from Rockliff again? If Rockliff managed to win a Brownlow on his current output it would be in the top 3 most non deserved Brownlows of all time.

He struggles to kick half the goals Beams does, he isn't anywhere near Beams as a clearance player, he isn't anywhere near Beams as a ball magnet, Beams is a better disposer on both sides of his body and is clearly the better contested player, and, Beams isn't even in the top 2 mids at Collingwood, so please, rave on about Brownlows if you like but if Rockliff does manage to snag enough votes to win one it'll be through the umpires lack of options.

Rockliff is a dime a dozen mid, nothing more at this stage.

Yeah you can't compare the two...

Statistically Rockliff is a clear number 1 from the 2008 draft class. Just wait until he plays in a better side and can complete an injury free pre season. Will form a good combo with Beams when he comes back home to the Lions.

Hurley would almost have to be the most over rated player in the competition.

In saying this, my top 10 is as such:

1. Nic Naitanui
2. Daniel Hannebery
3. Dayne Beams
4. Jack Ziebell
5. Rory Sloane
6. Hamish Hartlett
7. Steele Sidebottom
8. David Zaharakis
9. Luke Shuey
10. Mitch Robinson

I take it back, drugs are pretty bad.

You do realize Beams played as a fwd for pretty much his first 2 seasons don't you? He wasn't given anywhere near the midfield time Rockliff had, beams is that far ahead it's ridiculous even discussing it.

come back and see me when-if he puts up Beams 2012 numbers.

There's a small possibility that Carlisle goes forward and Hurley goes back but I get the feeling Carlisle really doesn't want to play as key forward.

Hurley at 4 is the same gag level as Robinson at 10.

Do you honestly not believe that Hurley would be one of the best defenders in the league? I recognise that as a forward Hurley is definitely not top ten, but if you don't rate him as a full back you haven't seen enough of him there.

Also come on. Mitch Robinson.

Did he even play more than 2 games in the backline? I think it would be closer to two quarters. So he has not cut it as a forward but he will make it as a back? This is wishful thinking. Let him do it first before ranking him as a very good back. Need more than a glimpse.

I remember saying 12 months ago that Hurley should be given every opportunity to become a forward, let's face it a gun forward is worth more than a gun back, but looking at Hurley as a forward this year I just don't think he has it, I do rate him highly as a KB though, and, he has more improvement in him than any of the 2008 midfield class, he should climb the ladder in this thread consistently during the rest of his career. IMO

I agree he needs to play consistently before Essendon fans can call him star defender but considering he's played one bad game in defense his whole career its a little more than wishful thinking to suggest that he will make it as a defender

Not all supporters give Hurley a free pass and I imagine most fair minded Essendon supporters would agree that he's unlikely to live up to his early hype.

However I do believe injuries are a legitimate excuse as to why a player is under performing.

Essendon supporters have a poor record of blaming injuries, when a player's performance is less than expected. It happens every year !

If I had the pick of Essendons list I would take Carlisle. I rate him a better defender and forward. Much better hands and reads the play much better. Kicking is the only thing Hurley has on him.

You got it wrong with Hurley and Carlisle. I am one for playing Carlisle forward and Hurley in defence. Carlisle can prove to be a better forward than Hurley, but Hurley is clearly a better defender than Carlisle.

I am in the camp that Carlisle' form is a touch over-rated. Even when carlisle took the match saving mark first time against Carlton, this only happened because Hooker subtly stopped Casboult from attacking the high ball.

As a defender its clear - Hurley is a fair way ahead of Carlisle.

Carlisle was in most people's AA team half way through this year. His form tapered off but for more than half a year he was one of the best key backs in the AFL. How could hird get it so wrong as playing them out of position?

Walters is just about the best small forward in the game, Breust is good and was a great rookie pick up and maybe should be listed in the top 20, but he is nowhere near as good as Michael Walters.

Michael Walters is a better goal kicker then Breust and probably a better marking player, but Breust is the better tackler and has better evasive skills. There are some aspects of Walters game that's better then Breust and there are certain aspects of Breust game that's better then Walters. At this stage it's a 50/50 split. If I was a recruiting manager at an AFL club I would be very happy with either player.

Don't think so. Walters was in the squad for All Australian this year, I doubt anyone would have mentioned Breust. There is a fair bit separating the two. Walters played with a torn PCL the last 6 weeks yet was still influential. Looking forward to seeing his form next year after another preseason. He's only taken 1 seriously thus far in his career.

There really isn't, only thing which favors Walters greatly is the .5 more goals per game, which could be accounted for Hawthorn having more dangerous goal kickers.
