You got it wrong with Hurley and Carlisle. I am one for playing Carlisle forward and Hurley in defence. Carlisle can prove to be a better forward than Hurley, but Hurley is clearly a better defender than Carlisle.

I am in the camp that Carlisle' form is a touch over-rated. Even when carlisle took the match saving mark first time against Carlton, this only happened because Hooker subtly stopped Casboult from attacking the high ball.

As a defender its clear - Hurley is a fair way ahead of Carlisle.

Would love to see Hurley as KPB. He does seem to chop off or get to an incoming ball quicker than those around him when down back, and definitely has the attitude of a hard-nosed defender. Plus he's not much chop in the forward line. Carlisle as a forward I also think would work well.

There really isn't, only thing which favors Walters greatly is the .5 more goals per game, which could be accounted for Hawthorn having more dangerous goal kickers.

But Hawthorn averaged 8 more inside 50's, so Breust would've had more chances...

I don't think there's a great deal between Bruest and Walters, Walters probably has it ATM, id be happy to have either though.

For most of these players, it's far too soon to be as definitive as some posters are being about who is the better player. Walters had a great 2013, for example but was just a promising, up and coming player before then (with a few work rate issues). Breust had a decent 2013 (in a premiership side) but his 2012 was the equal of Walters' 2013, albeit that they have different styles of play.

Most of these players have had one, maybe two, excellent seasons thus far. What will separate them at the end of their careers is how many such seasons they are able to deliver. Plenty of players have appeared to be the next best thing, based on one great season, but have not been able to reproduce it on a regular basis.

Breust spends more time further up the ground then what Walters does. The only thing that lets Breust down is his inaccurate kicking.

Hurley is the best defender at Essendon, quiet easily I might add, he plays a style similar to Glen Archer but as a full back. Hird & Knights have had it wrong because those early glimpses, I have pretty much always wanted him back.

But in 2014 he will take Crameri's role which will suit him majorly as Daniher and Bellchambers will demand the 2 tallest defenders, seriously he could be a dangerous player in 2014, if teams don't play their number 1 defender on him he will give quiet a few a touch up.

I would still trade a pick in the teens for Watts. I just think it has been unfortunate for him that he has not got any decent senior guys around him and really he seems like a guy who would follow the lead then just take control.

That's an interesting comment. I remember last year he came out and blamed the losses on a lack of leaders. He doesn't have leadership potential in him and really needs a strong club. A complete juxtaposition of a Sloane type of player who takes the club with him.

I'm not sure it really matters which one of them gets the third defender. If Bellchambers or Daniher get the third tall I'd say there is a big chance they win that matchup.

Gibson had no trouble absolutely toweling Daniher in that same game, despite being over 10 centimetres shorter. But I still agree that it's a tough forward line to match up on.

I don't think anyone is saying Essendon's forward line is going to be a force next year but I do see a forward line of Daniher, Hurley and a resting ruck causes plenty of match up problems against most sides next year.
