I also think Howard is safe (based on comments coming out of the club).

Howard has signed a two year extension (to end-2010), so consider any talk of delisting done & dusted.;)

According to Hutchy on the Footy Show last night the Saints are leading in the race to get Ben Cousins. If that is so and we went for him,
1. What draft pick would we have to use?
2. How would that affect the rest of this years recruiting?

Fair enough keeping him on for next year, but a two year contract for a player already two years in and not lighting fires at VFL yet... why would they do that?

Agree, but they have huge wraps on him.

Was a very strange process right from the start i.e. using pick 27 for him becuase they weren't sure he'd last until pick 59 (that was their comments, not mine). Just bizarre.

Certainly you can see the improvement, and they see his physcial abilities at training (been reports that he is very good on the track).

But yeah, it's been slow going and I haven't yet seen him tuck the ball under the arm and go for a slashing "catch me if you can" run, or drill someone into the ground tackle, or a run from behind holding the ball.

Would have thought another year would do it, but maybe they believe he will be a player to watch next year?

A couple of hypotheticals:

Kosi & Dal for Brown? Or one of them and a first or second round pick? Brown at full forward with Roo at CHF would be awesome.

Dal and a first round for Kerr? Midfield for midfield, we'd be the winners here. Kerr could get us close to a premiership. May have to sacrifice 5-10 years down the track for the next 1-5 years, which is a much better opportunity to win a flag especilly given the concessions to the Gold Coast and Western Sydney in my opinion. Imagine if we miraculously got Kerr and Cousins with Riewoldt up forward.

if its true that ross lyon believes in a four year apprenticeship that could be the reason for the extended contract. It is not uncommon for a young player to get a regular spot after three or four years, it sort of guarantees that you dont let a good player go

interesting how you think Dal is not worth as much as Kerr. Kerr has been injured and has suspension issues. I think he has played as bad as Dal this year, and for potential Dal is potentially a better player than Ker.
No Kerr for me.

Betting market just opened for:
Which Team Will Daniel Kerr Play For In 2009?

And believe it or not.......

St.Kilda $3.50
West Coast $ 3.50
Collingwood $4.25
Carlton $8.00
Essendon $9.00

I know these things don't mean much but want i don't understand is why are we such short favourites for him? Bizzare.

Ahh wait here we go...
Eagles star Kerr to become a Saint?

September 8, 2008 - 11:25AM

Speculation about where Daniel Kerr's future lies has been rife all season but now fans have the opportunity to put their money where their mouth is.
A new market has opened about where the star Eagles onballer will be playing his football in 2009, with St Kilda the early favourite to snare his services.
St Kilda are rated a $2.75 chance by Sportingbet Australia while Collingwood are a close second at $3.50.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said recently it would take the "deal of a lifetime" for Kerr to be playing elsewhere in 2009 but the talk around town is that Kerr wants out, with the Eagles placed at just a $5 chance to retain their star onballer.

Carlton, who snared Kerr's good friend and former Eagles skipper Chris Judd last year, round out the top four at $8, while Essendon ($9) is next in line.
Sportingbet Australia chief executive Michael Sullivan said the Saints were favourites because they were in premiership mode and would have plenty of room in their salary cap following the departures of Fraser Gehrig and Robert Harvey.

"It has been suggested that Kerr would like to experience playing for a Victorian club and avoid the rebuilding process taking place at West Coast," Sullivan said.

"The Saints will be premiership contenders over the next few years and with Robert Harvey and Fraser Gehrig coming off the books after this season, St Kilda will have salary cap space for Kerr, should he fly out of WA.
"St Kilda would need to acquire higher draft picks and give up young talent to make this deal happen.

"Collingwood are always mentioned when a big name player is available and we consider them to be the biggest threat to St Kilda getting Kerr."
Geelong, who already possess the most potent midfield in the league and are well on their way to back-to-back premierships, are the longest odds at $41.
West Coast's cross-town rivals, Fremantle, are a $15 chance.

Very highly doubt we'd make a play for him. But if we do i will be very pissed off if we are left without a first round pick.

I disagree. With the Gold Coast concessions our best chance is to try to win a premiership within 5 years. A first round draft pick will take that long to come good. By then Lenny will be 33 and Riewoldt, Kosi, Ball, Dal all pushing 30. I'd make plays for both Kerr and Cousins.

We're probably THAT short because of the Cousins rumours. people probably assume that Kerr wants to play With Cuzz without any evidence that Cuzz even wants to play with the Saints or that Kerr and he are best buddies!

Kosi plays at Full Forward? :p

He's not really your genuine FF, he's a part time ruck, part time forward, part time backmen.

We'll probs keep him next year, but I wouldn't mind seeing Allen get a game there. And possibly Big Mac in 2010.

Couldn't do any worse than Kosi hey?

Allen, McEvoy and Ferguson in 08 - 6 games for 0 goals
Kosi in 08 - 20 games for 27 goals

As dissappointing as Kosi has been, the fact is he's a far better option as a tall forward than anyone on our list apart from Reiwoldt obviously. Add his part time rucking and I'd say he's fairly important. If we do trade Kosi it has to somehow involve a decent tall forward because otherwise our forward structure will be even more rooted than it is now.

After watching yesterdays shocker, I have changed my mind about recruiting this year. We need to get rid of a heap! Trade any for draft picks if we can. What type of players do we need? We need new blood everywhere. If we take this Irish kid as an extra rookie, and the NSW Scholarship Blake Campbell (208cm) it will be a start.

i say deffinatly get cuz, he will be almost free anyway.
i am a fan of having a look at lovett, he would fit in nicely..
i dont think we should go for kerr, the only way i would be happy with a kerr deal is if it involves kosi and not a high draft pick.
i would not be trading away our first round pick, i would not trade dal or any of our midfield either..
what do you guys think of danyle peirce??

LOL good try idiot :thumbsu:

how about we give you Raph Clarke and you give us one of your best young players...oh wait, sorry you dont have any
Nice one fool:eek:

Lovett is a line breaker. Exactly what the Saints need. He is 25 so if you perceive your window to be open for another few years he is perfect. Decent disposal too. Inconsistency and off-field indiscretions are his weaknesses. Perhaps a change in scenery will help him?

What would you give up for him? Certainly fills one of your needs.

Billy Madison: hey ill trade you the rest of this banana for that snack pack?
Kid: (shakes head).

KEY: Banana, Raph Clarke
Snack Pack, Lovett

You keep telling yourself that. If your window is indeed for the next few years Lovett would be an ideal pick up.
