Would love Talia to fall to 21.

By Matt Burgan 6:52 AM Tue 13 October, 2009
David Astbury (North Ballarat Rebels, VIC)
Height: 193cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 26/02/91
Recruited from: Tatyoon
Has always been on the radar this year and looms as a second to third rounder. He can also play up forward, with his lead-up play and strong hands are a feature.
Draft range: 30-50

Dylan Grimes (Northern Knights, VIC) Height: 192cm, Weight: 81kg, DOB: 16/07/91
Recruited from: Hurstbridge
The younger brother of emerging Demon Jack is also set to join the AFL. Grimes is taller than his older sibling, impressing with his closing speed and strong defensive play.
Draft range: 30-50

Tom MacKenzie (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 10/09/91
Recruited from: Anglesea
Able to play on talls or smalls, the athletic MacKenzie looms as a post top 30 prospect – more likely mid third to fourth round.
Draft range: 35-65

Simon Potts (North Adelaide, SA)
Height: 190cm, Weight: 76kg, DOB: 07/03/91
Recruited from: BMW
A good reader of play and a user of the ball by foot, the South Australian under-18 representative looms as a back-end selection to rookie prospect.
Draft range: Late-rookie

Sam Reid (Murray Bushrangers, VIC)
Height: 192cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 27/12/91
Recruited from: Wangaratta
The athletic rebounder – and younger brother of Collingwood's Ben – has been rated as a possible first-round selection by some recruiters through to a third-round choice.
Draft range: 12-45

Sam Shaw (Oakleigh Chargers, VIC)
Height: 191cm, Weight: 77kg, DOB: 05/04/91
Recruited from: Xavier College
A versatile prospect, Shaw is capable of playing up forward and in the midfield, due to his outstanding leap and pace. A second to third-round prospect.
Draft range: 20-50

Daniel Talia (Calder Cannons, VIC)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 89kg, DOB: 02/10/91
Recruited from: Assumption College
Talia will be one of the most sought after key defender/forwards in this year's draft. He could sneak into the top 10 or at worst push into the early stage of the second round.
Draft range: 8-25

Mitchell Taylor (NT Thunder, NT)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 06/10/90
Recruited from: Wanderers
One of the Northern Territory's top prospects this year, the rebounder is a 19-year-old who is regarded by many recruiters as a back-end selection or early rookie prospect.
Draft range: Late-rookie

Luke Thompson (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 192cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 08/02/91
Recruited from: Timboon
Although many recruiters believed he would be taken as a 17-year-old draftee last year, the athletic and versatile Thompson is now viewed as a third to fourth rounder.
Draft range: 35-65

I'm hoping

5 Cunnington
21 Jetta
25 Luke Ball
37 Serhat Temel - Big turkish fullfoward. Next buddy.
41 Majak Daw - Sudanese lad. Good poster boy for the multicultural centre

Shut up shop and call it a day at that point:thumbsu:
This is interesting. I'm not suggesting that we do this, but if you consider that Melbourne is saying:

"The Demons have picks 1, 2, 11 and 18 in the NAB AFL Draft on November 26, but coach Dean Bailey says his club won’t select the 25-year-old with any of those picks.

"Certainly one, two, 11 and 18 we're going to be picking some young players, but it's whether 34 comes into the equation or maybe 50, but I don't think he's going to be there at 50. It's whether we use 34," he said.

And we were supposed to have offered Pick 25 for Sharrod Wellingham, would we go for Ball if he went in the ND and was available? A long shot for a number of reasons, but there it is.

Would be happy with this:

5. Cunnington
21. Griffiths/Astbury
25. Melksham/Bastinac
37. Winmar
41. Sewell/Barlow
53. Hooper

What I would like to see
5. Cunnington
21. Bastinac
25. Hooper
37. Astbury
41. Barlow/Sewell
53. Shaw

If we take Hooper with anything before the 4th round il spew.

You have to be somthing extremely special to make it in the AFL at 5"6.

He would be the shortest guy in the AFL by over an inch.

The games I've seen of him he has been pretty good and also he is the joint Larke Medallist, I wouldn't mind picking him up at pick 25 because he will be gone by pick 37. Hooper is the same size as Harvey 176cm 78kg and we picked Harvey as a third round pick 47 in 1995 and he seems to of equipped himself quite well.

he wont be gone by pick 37 he will be lucky to get drafted at all

agree with pykie that would be a terrible 2nd round selection

Won't be gone by 37. May only be rookie listed.

The difference being; One of them is an extremely quick, extremely clever, extremely skillful attacking goal kicking midfielder, that was good enough to be one of the best young midfielders in the comp by the age of 21.

The other has played a fair chunk of his juniors out of the backline, a position he couldn't possibly be expected to play at AFL level, considering he would be giving up 6-8" on an average sized half forward, ala a Ben Warren or Jack Ziebell.

Im not against picking him up with our last pick, but 21/25 still have a big chance of striking gold, and if we address our midfield issues with #5, 21/25# should be set aside for a KPF and possibly a tricky third tall like a Troy Taylor.

Okay at least you explained a reason instead of just shooting me down like previous post.:thumbsu:
I think Taylor would would be gone by even #21 as Port and Dockers seem to have an interest in him. If Port pass over him then we will have to jump on him at #21 before the Dockers come in at #22 and #23.

I think Hooper is a super young player at the under18 level, and is more talented than a lot of players past pick 20 odd in the draft, but again, height is the only issue.
I was a huge fan of Fortunato Caruso, who won two Morrish Medals, but didn't get drafted.
The sad thing is that unless you're supremely talented like Boomer, Libba or even Alywn Davey, you're going to struggle to make it in the AFL sub 175+. I struggle to see where he'll find a position. I'm not sure he'd be able to play his current position in the AFL as he's just too short. I'm not sure his disposal is good enough to play the Boomer-esque position (it's actually not too bad but I wouldn't class it as a strength), so he'd have to be an inside midfielder- which I personally think he could do with some development.

On the plus side, he has a good vertical leap, is quick and seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I'd take him with 41 unless there was a good player to slip to around that area, because I think he's worth taking a punt on. If he were 180 or so, he'd be in the top 25, so I think at 41, it's worth a shot. Wouldn't take him before that.

On a side note, I see that Geelong have delisted Scott Simpson, a fairly promising forward when he was selected in 07 (IIRC, the guy they had to take because we shafted them from Scott Thompson)

He was injured this year, and probably isn't the quickest bloke around, but I think if we were going to take 6 picks, or even if the quality at 41 was a bit thin, he wouldn't be the worst player for us to look at.

Good contested mark, good set shot, and a pretty good work ethic. I must admit I haven't seen too much of his VFL form, so if anybody has seen much of him primarily last year, a rundown of his progress would be good.

If talia, koby stevens, christensen or taylor slide to our 2nd round picks, we are in for a good day. Somehow i think Lewis will pull a few left field selections, similar to Wright last year. No one saw him being selected so early, but he turned out well

Interesting there was 6 players taken under 180cm last year and Freo took 3 of them and Melbourne 2.

Gary Rohan (Geelong Falcons, VIC)
Height: 186cm, Weight: 79kg, DOB: 07/06/91
Recruited from: Cobden
One of the draft's most exciting prospects this year. Rohan is an explosive, high-leaping type. His stocks have continued to climb throughout the year and a top 10 spot beckons.

Jack Trengove (Sturt, SA)
