List Mgmt. 2009 Draft Selections

Just having a look at our selections for the 2009 draft. Could it potentially be as good as 2001? I know it is early but Stephen Wells did a good job, as always.

#17 - Daniel Menzel
#28 - Mitch Duncan
$40 - Allen Christensen
#42 - Nathan Vardy
#56 - Josh Cowan

That's a pretty big call, 01 was one of our best ever, albeit that we had much better picks that year than 09. For return on picks relative to the lack of high picks, 2009 will look very very very good in years to come.

Not just the quality of the five players, but getting Duncan for Mumford, and trading pick 33 for Bundy + Vardy + Cowan was some very good Wells thinking.

#17 - Daniel Menzel - Something different about him, doesn't find it a lot but when he does he's all class. Looking good so far.
#28 - Mitch Duncan - Going to be a great goal kicking midfielder, good poise and a good kick.
$40 - Allen Christensen - Really surprised how he adapted and made an impact this year. Maybe I missed a lot of his in tight work in the VFL but he didn't stand out to me there. Looks great and fits in perfectly.
#42 - Nathan Vardy - Good mark, natural footballer, cant wait till he bulks and has the same confidence that he had in juniors aggression wise. Will impose himself on games.
#56 - Josh Cowan - Probably a bit early to tell, but he hasn't done anything wrong yet, tried really hard yesterday and had some good passages of play. Like the look of him, will be interesting to see where he's at in a year or two. The few games experience he has had would be invaluable to him.

Some very good selections from Wells. Lets just hope the natural improvement is there.

Better than 01 is unlikely.

That said, 09 as of today seems bountiful in its return.

To have had games from all 5 is one thing, but to have seen the ability to contribute at the highest level is another. Not saying that they will all be AA players for us but you still have to be impressed that as players 18 months into it they have shown enough to get a game and hold their place....

Great signs for the future...

Prob top 5 draft of all time if it keeps going this way.....

Power forwards just about never come that cheap. What a bargain, and an important bargain at that (especially with where Mooney and Hawkins are presently at).

It may be Wells best effort considering the picks and the swaps to get those picks but it will almost certainly not be as good as 01 in results. Hope I'm wrong but to get 2 Brownlow medalist , 2 flags etc is a very hard task.

For it to have any hope he needs to do it again somehow this year or next year.We got close to half our side from 99 & 01 so if we can look back in a few years and say which was better 99/01 or 09/11 then considering the 09 picks were taken after a flag , it would truly be supreme.

He would have gone easily in the top 5 if it wasnt for father son.

But then Kel at 17 is a great pickup, and stevie J at 24 was an absolute steal!!

We did get a few spuds in that lot though too, Gardner at 23 & Playfair at 41, Mccarthy at 69 too.
Dave Johnson also at 81, but he was a valuable contributor when we needed him, just found it hard to break into one of the best backlines in the comp!!

Still, its a long way to go, if they end up being anywhere near as good as our first few picks in 01 then we are bloody lucky!!

l think wells and the cats did a deal with the devil (hawthorn) as a part of the burgone trade to get the extra picks.l thought at the time that deal could come back to bite with making the devil alittle stronger.but it was a win/win really good on ya wells n co.

Amazing recruiting, funny how the class of 09 has overtaken 08, yet the 08 guys are all talented players as well, just had bad luck with injury (Motlop, Brown) or opportunity (Gillies). Taylor Hunt of course is getting his game.

I don't remember it this way.
I can remember many times watching Ablett struggling in the early years and opposition supporters going troppo with the ..........." if your name wasn't Ablett you wouldn't get a game for any team ".... calls. Especially the Sainters. He was a gamble.

While I am at it Scarlett was another people reckon was always going to be a champion. In fact when he was drafted I can remember being underwhelmed. IMO he had a few head issues and also was a gamble.

Fortunately you have to draft father sons who do enough as 17yo's. Like Woolnough, Callen, Donohue etc. Along the way we got two champions and a few serviceables eg. Blake.

2009 has been very good, 2010 looks very promising and if Brown comes up 2008 will be icing on the cake.

Some are professional idiots , employed to be experts and propagate this because its easier to believe than the truth. That we have developed kids into champs.

Even today in the media , a supposedly complementary article about Geelong being a Player Factory had to say this :
"A club once mocked for its heavy reliance on father-son selections has become a talent factory rivalled only by Collingwood."
Frankly this is just crap. There is one time we have gained a big advantage from FS and that was Selwood and Hawkins and after that the noisey complaints ensured they changed the system

At times I wished that the FS bidding system had been in then , because I have no doubt , in a draft thats considered one of the best of all time. A draft with Judd, Hodge,Ball,Bartel,Kelly,SJohnson etc that no club would have offered anything earlier than an R2 pick for him And as we were relatively early his cost value to us would have been what we paid , R3.

Spot on, neither Ablett nor Scarlo were considred by other clubs to be top rating palyers. a fact that the media is desperately trying to alter.

Yeah but was that because they already knew that they were going to go late due to the FS rule?
I guess there is no point other clubs expressing interest in players under the old rules if they know they cant get them.

There is no real way of knowing where either of those two would have place in the draft to be honest, unless they were in the draft.

Having said that, the media hang it on us for our father son picks, which realistically the only two worth noting were ablett and scarlo.
Its pot luck that we get those picks and not something you can work towards to help you get a premiership.

Its funny, you dont hear anything about Collingwood and their father son players..... Cloake and Shaw didnt end up being duds for them, and they have had just as many father son picks in the same time frame as we have!!

I dont know about that so much. Obviously someone in the Geelong training camp saw something when they told him to up his '07 pre-season and put him in the midfield!!
But it was a nice suprise for the rest of us!!

I remember an interview with Wells around '08 when he said Ablett would have gone somewhere between picks 20 - 30 if available. Matty Scarlett probably would have gone between picks 30 - 40 also.
Alot of uneducated supporters make out we got A-grade superstars in those years for nothing when in fact we probably got them a round later than where they would have gone in an open draft.

This is wrong. He showed exceptional ability from very early on. Most good judges rated him a top AFL player from a very young age, Kevin Sheehan told me he was a better than Bartel and Kelly before they played a game. Few might have queried it after year one, but after year two he moved ahead and stayed there.

Said Ablett was a good little player but never in the same league as Bartel as a junior. FWIW his pick as the best junior of that year was Luke Ball.

Yes Bartel was a better player but every year there is players who win best and fairest in TAC cup who don't even get drafted. Ablett had the cleanest hands in Australia for his age. It was widely known. I am sure around Geelong other players were rated higher, there is probably players still dining out in Lambys about finishing ahead of him in b and f at the falcons but recruiters always loved Hodge first and then Ablett and Bartel second. That is fact.

The players are the ones at the coalface and know damned well a good player when they see one. Obviously the coaches at the TAC level must be complete muppets using your logic as they're the ones who said Bartel was the main man at the Falcons and priority one in being curtailed.
Of course Ablett didn't deserved to win the MVP 3 years running because the players have no idea of a good player when they see one.
We may disagree on where he would of gone in the draft, but using that argument is pathetic
