Sure, he did do a couple of exciting things last season, the fact he'd walked away and come back magnified them somewhat.

Actually IIRC he averaged the 2nd highest amount of votes in the Merrett Murray. I think it's the other way around - on his current form people have forgotten just how good he was last year.

Happy to take my medicine thanks Grim, glad you made it strawberry flavour. Clearly I place myself in the 'forgotten' category - mind you I'm also falling into the trap of focusing on negatives of late like much of us unfortunately..

You couldn't happen to find that Grim? I went searching for that post about the average votes per games played when I was going to make a Hooper post a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't find it anywhere!

I couldn't find it either. Damn those ambiguous titles. I will keep looking.

Interesting to see who our top 22 were last season...and the fact that quite a few of them have taken a huge dive or have been/are being discussed as trade bait.. For $hits and giggles thought I'd compare their Medal result in 2007 vs what I see as their rating (A-F) for season 2008...

2007 medal ranking followed by a A-F rating from FFB for 2008..

Brown (B+)
Adcock (D+)
Notting (E)
Power (B)
Black (B)
Lappin (N/A....)
Stiller (E)
Merrett (B)
Copeland (D-)
Patfull (B)
Brennan (B+)
Rischa (C)
Charman (C)
Roe (C)
Begley (N/A)
Selwood (D)
Drummond (B-)
McGrath (D)
Hooper (D)
MacDonald (B)
Hadley (N/A)
Mills (N/A)

Perhaps I should have made that A-E cos I cant ever give anyone an F...

And if I was to give my top 22 for season 2008 so far it would go a little something like this (thanks Run DMC v Jason Nevins...):

Ummm.........I'm struggling with anything below number 5 at the moment..

Is Selwood out of contract this year?? We might try snatch him in PSD so we get 3/4 of the Selwoods. Too bad the one we would be missing is the most talented of the lot. Might be part of a plan to try reunite all of them at West Coast.

Another year to go according to my records(not guaranteed accurate) - some calling for his scalp ATM following our poor second half - I think he will be staying but time will tell

I think you're being a little harsh on Rischa. He seems to be the only player out of the mob who's actually given a damn the last few weeks. And MacDonald has had a great year.

That being said, I agree with every other analysis though the frustration I've felt at attending our Melbourne games this year might've forced me to throw a few F's around.

I'd definitely go for a 3rd/4th rounder for Selwood.

His brother will be the next captain at WCE, it can't hurt to have a doppelganger should we need to pin an off field indiscretion on somebody. ;)

hahaha, nice post. Could have helped over the past few years:D

Copeland and Moody out of chances you'd think.

Copeland will be traded for a nothing pick (like 70 something) to a club that has a lack on mid-age mid-tier types. Sydney perhaps.

Mills as an emergency in round 22. Does this mean there is a future for the big man at the lions?

Or does it just mean that all the other fit younger big men are playing? (Henderson, Clouston and Collier with Clark and Leuenberger out injured)

I'm not sure.

I THINK MILLS HAS EVERY CHANCE TO DEVELOP INTO A VERY VALUABLE PLAYER BIG,TOUGH,STRONG, FAST,GREAT ENDURANCE WON MARK OF THE WEEK IN 2007 WEAKNESS - KICKING
I just copied that directly from where I had noted it with my assessments at the end of last season - maybe he has been given a development year with Suncoast

This is how I see it at the end of 08. I'm not sure about the contract situation with most of them though.

Retirements:
Lappin
McDonald

Trade bait:
Sherman
McGrath
Selwood

Delisted (in this order):
Copeland
Harding
Mills
Notting
Moody

That still leaves:
Schmidt
Hawksley
Sheldon
Tyler
Corrie
Hooper
Austin
Polkinghorne
Johnstone
+ 5-7 new players on the list for at least one more year. For the majority there, if they don't show anything, or decline any further, that's as long as they will be on the list.

Moody :D

That still leaves:
Schmidt - He'll be that Farren Ray type next season
Hawksley - Is this the Aker pick > needs to develop
Sheldon - Is reputed to be improving at a rapid rate
Tyler - I'm hoping he stays fit and adds another 5kg to his frame
Corrie - Definition of frustrating
Hooper - See above, but with more upside
Austin - ???
Polkinghorne - Will do well down the track
Johnstone - Down hill skier

Can I add Proud to that list too please; he was supposed to be a bargain pick @ 22, yet to see what all the fuss was about.....saw one good game of his (practice match vs North at Optus Oval, has 32p and looked awesome)....needs a lot of endurance work drilled into him!!!

Quite similar to what I had in mind Warwick, although would we explore trading before purely delisting, particularly Moody (there'd have to be some interest from WA) and possibly Harding (however he's done little to be of any value to any club)? That said, after last night, Sherman went BANG to the top of my list for trade bait. Agree with McGrath too.

I'd go as far as adding Corrie to the list of tradeable players - its post season now and I struggle to think of any games where he played a cracker - although the same could go for a number of them.

Once again, IMO, we desperately need to recruit a small forward/crumber - thats why I'd entertain Lovett in a Lions guernsey, although this wasnt his primary role at the Bombers. We seriously lacked anything down forward besides B & B. this season - Hooper is mediocre. I'd like to see Hooper down there with Lovett.

Lovett, undoubted talent - been inconsistent or lacking purpose lately - I'm picking up (from reports) he seems to have attitude and/or off field problems - Essendon seemingly can't get rid of him quickly enough - sounds like just what we want - would fit in nicely

Hooper - contracted till end of 2010 - lets hope he lives up to his potential or should we get back to those who were chasing him with big bucks at the end of last season? - will they still want him or offer value? - because I wouldn't just give him away when he has only had about 40 games

Trading in general - need to be very careful about who is coming in - we usually do very little of it and then only for top players - lets look at North Melbourne - Thompson a success - top player, but a bit too old when picked up IMO - Hay,talented player - a costly and disappointing failure - in both trades valuable draft picks were spent or wasted - The Roos have done much better rebuilding since then by clever (or lucky) drafting and rookies

I'll sign the 'Bring Lovett to Brisbane Town' petition. Unless anyone can give me a player on our list who next year will be our saviour on the half forward flank and when I say the HFF I mean kick 2-3 goals a game.

I'm still 50/50 on Hooper. The first handful of games next season is make or break.

We may not have participated last season but I would be very surprised if we didnt this season. I'm quite sure at the end of last season we didnt all sit here and identify as many issues in our team balance and strucutre as we have this year.

Andrew Lovett - turns 26 on 11/11/08 - averaged 0.9 of a goal in 16 matches in 2008

Rhan Hooper - Turns 21 on 9/01/09 - kicked 19 goals in 20 matches in 2008

Anthony Corrie - turned 24 on 22 June just gone - kicked 21 goals in 20 matches in 2008

Whats the big deal with Lovett anyhow ? - If he is some kind of saviour Essendon won't let him go
