Re: Media Thread

I'd like to nominate the interesting articles I read last week from the hun.

1) that GC17 is chasing Lance franklin and james bartel as priority signings and

2) that Roo's mum and dad are potentially moving to melbourne to see more games

also in the article from 22/3 in Hutchy was that Roo's dad is no longer in a business partnership with that downie chap who runs GC17.

They were just intriguing due to the occasional speculation that roo will drop us like a hot potato and chase the money like Judd did.

That was in the Dreamteam column though wasn't it Krusden?

Hudghton aims for round three return

By Ben Broad 4:27 PM Mon 16 March, 2009

St Kilda hopes veteran Max Hudghton might be fit in time to tackle the West Coast Eagles in round three of the home-and-away season.

Scans confirmed the 32-year-old strained his calf in the opening moments of his team’s final pre-season match against Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday.

St Kilda football manager Greg Hutchison said the strain was likely to keep the Saints’ most reliable stopper sidelined for up to four weeks.

“He was scanned and it just showed what we thought on the night,” Hutchison said.

“It just showed a calf strain and he’s going to be out for four weeks. It’s disappointing for him; he’s been an important player for us and still is an important player.”

With St Kilda making a preliminary final last season, hopes are high at Moorabbin that the club can go at least one step further in 2009.

Hudghton is a key figure in those plans and coach Ross Lyon will be hoping his stalwart’s body remains injury-free once he returns.

Age has yet to catch up with the unfashionable full-back. Hudghton has previously suffered from calf injuries and Hutchison said Friday’s injury occurred innocuously.

“It was particularly disappointing for it to happen so early in the game … and there wasn’t much involved in it,” he said.

“He wasn’t even really sprinting. He’d sort of just taken off.

“The ball had come out of the centre bounce for the first time and it was in a run with [
Warren] Tredrea towards the footy and he just pulled up short.

“But he recovers pretty well, so all things being equal he’ll be back around round three.”

Doing whatever a Schneider can

By Luke Holmesby 1:45 PM Thu 19 March, 2009

WHEN Adam Schneider was traded from the Sydney Swans at the end of 2007 two questions were asked upon his arrival at St Kilda.

The first was why the Swans had let the dangerous forward go at the peak of his footballing powers and the second was could he fit in with fellow goalsneak Stephen Milne?

Schneider can’t give an answer to the first, but says the figures answer the question about how well he combined with Milne. Schneider was the team’s fourth-highest goalkicker for the season with 28, while Milne was the second-highest with 60.

“That was just a myth that we wouldn’t work together. Milney is a fantastic player. Kicking 60 goals as a small forward just shows how good he is and there is no reason we can’t play together well,” Schneider said.

“We made a prelim last year and we work well together and play each other’s role. It’s a good mix.”

With Milne and Schneider assuming the crumbing roles and Nick Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke the two marking options, the Saints have identified a need to develop the mid-sized forward that they haven’t had since Aaron Hamill succumbed to injury.

But with the drafting of Tom Lynch and the grooming of Sam Gilbert as a goalkicker, Schneider says the Saints are not far off finding that missing element.

“It is very handy to have a mid-sized forward that can run all day like Ryan O’Keefe. Tommy has shown a bit in the first couple of games and Sam is also in good form at the moment,” he said.

“Sam would probably be a good fit for that role. He can run all day and he’s strong. He’s also got a smart footy brain so he’d be very handy if we could have him playing that role this year.”

Schneider is coming off an interrupted pre-season after aggravating a hamstring injury in January. He was on a modified program and only played sparingly in St Kilda’s last two pre-season matches.

While the injury was to the same hamstring that kept him out for three weeks early last year, it was to a different part of the hamstring.

“I did most of the pre-season. I did it all from the start until mid-January then I had two or three weeks there where I eased back. I kept up the fitness and had all the work done. Now it is just about getting back and getting the body used to the game type fitness and the muscles you are going to use,” he said.

But he is not too concerned about missing the pre-season matches and has shown throughout his career with the Swans and Saints that he has a habit of peaking at the right time of year.

He has managed to play 15 finals as opposed to just five NAB Cup games and has forged a reputation as a big game player. In fact one of the best matches of his career came for the Swans in the victorious 2005 preliminary final – ironically against St Kilda.

But those Sydney days are well behind him and as he prepares to embark on his second season as a Saint he says he is getting used to living life in the AFL’s capital city.

“The second year feels a lot more comfortable. It feels like home now. It took a while to fit in and get to know the boys but now I feel that I’ve been here a while and I’m very comfortable, which makes life easier.”

Hopefully he makes an impact this year...*cough*andlosesomeweight.
Heard [strike]he came back [/strike]is still a bit porky.

Re: Media Thread

It was reported in WA tonight 6pr sports radio , Hardie , Langdon and Barich that Goddard is out this week due to a hammy .

Re: Media Thread

any of you saints supporters know whether there is any truth to the rumour that Brendon Goddard is injured and might not be right to play in round 1?

Could be someone sh*tstirring, but I saw it posted in another thread that there had been an announcement about his injury on some radio station.

As far as I think anyone knows;

It's only been heard on radio from commentators / guys in the "know" and the injury ranges from 3 weeks to 10 weeks.

ATM, the worry is simply because of who started the rumour (Hardie) as he is "usually" right, although nothing anywhere confirms any sort of injury in any official capacity.

Re: Media Thread

SuperCoaches around Australia are shitting themselves as we speak.

Stephen Silavagni assess' everyone on our list. Nothing too groundbreaking.
Colm Begley
He’s an elite runner and a player we will look to play predominantly in the back line but maybe at times through the midfield

Paul Cahill
Paul had an interrupted pre-season and he is probably at the minute just joining the skills program. We’re just trying to get his body right and making sure he can get through his first season on an AFL list.

Nick Heyne
We recruited him as a forward and he has shown he can do some special things. We want to put a bit of body strength on him and help him learn the structures.

Tom Lynch
Tommy has played a couple of practice matches. We picked him as a forward in the draft and we hope he may play some senior footy this year. It is a matter of time for him and making sure that he does everything right and works on his deficiencies.

Farren Ray
He can play anywhere on the ground and brings some flexibility to the team. He is in tip top nick. We are pleased to have got him from the Dogs.

Alistair Smith
He hasn’t done a lot in the pre-season and had a small operation. He is doing some skills work and we haven’t got a great expectation of him this year, but who knows?

Rhys Stanley
He also had an operation so he hasn’t done much of the pre-season. From what we’ve seen he looks impressive and can play ruck and up forward. There’s some exciting signs there.

Jack Steven
He is one that was close to senior footy last year. We are expecting him to play this year. It is important that he keeps doing the work. His opportunity is there if he wants to push himself to play at AFL level.

Ross Tungatulum
He’s lightning quick and has very good skills. He is one that could one day be elevated to a senior list. He has some really good attributes and can crumb a football. He has to put a bit of weight on but has already put on three or four kilos since coming down.

The rest.

Very average effort from The Age today. They have a photo of Lenny Hayes captioned as Andrew McQualter. Aren't they a sponsor of ours?

Anyway, there's a good photo of the boys training on the back of the Herald Sun today as well.

Re: Media Thread

**Breaking News**

I have scoured through all the papers & websites so I don't think has been reported yet anywhere in the media but there is massive debut for a future rising star for the Saints.

He'll be playing on the Sunday (Friday would have been magic) at the dome but we're very excited about Bubblegoose Jnr's first game on the big stage. He's been tearing up the track over summer with a massive preseason & we're expecting quite a buzz on the Auskick DT sites.

:)
