Re: Media Thread

Great news.

Finally some love from the MRP. Joey just make sure you keep that silly stuff for a time it's really needed, not when we're 70 odd points up.

Re: Media Thread

Or just leave it to Chesty Bond (Bakerdog) who actually did get a couple of punches in on Haselby - actually they were punching each other for a half a minute there on the wing. I think Haselby finally realised that Baker was happy to sit there all day and trade jumper (and other) punches.

We love the Bakerdog.

How about when McPharlin stuck his knee straight into our man's spine. Bakes was in a world of hurt, but simply got up and kept on going. I LOVE IT.

I detected a slight wince - I hope the trainer located his kidney (it's either near the Big Q(ueer)s glove or Pavlova's ego) so they could stitch it back in for this week.

We should take up a collection for the poor bugger - he's been screwed by the AFL and taken more than one for the gipper. He ain't going to last much longer unfortunately (29 next month). The kids won't be too amused with his majic tricks if he comes at 'em in a wheelchair!!!

Re: Media Thread

S.Baker is ye heart and soul of ye team. I've forgotten just how valuable he is to the team. Will be invaluable this week against the soft pricks.

Re: Media Thread

Hanging on to his halo

On the surface it was not a huge football news story. A 22-year-old with fewer than 50 matches to his name re-signs with his club for three years.

But when Gold Coast-raised Sam Gilbert signed on the dotted line for St Kilda at the start of this month, it was a true gesture of loyalty in the face of expansion.

Many big AFL names have not signed on beyond 2010, knowing that their market price could soar with the Gold Coast in the game. But Gilbert did not want to mess around with the club he has called home for almost four years and signed on at least until the end of 2011.

"I never wanted to leave. I see the new team as a great thing for the Coast and I'm more than happy for them, but my home is here at St Kilda and I'd love to stay here as long as I can," Gilbert told saints.com.au.

But Gilbert's re-signing has not brought the rumour mill to a stop. Even has recently as this Thursday, there was a small article in a Gold Coast newspaper suggesting the team will be after him.

But Gilbert said the article had no substance.

"I haven't heard anything about it. I'm not worried about that. For that to happen, something would have to go wrong and at the moment I'm a Saints man and I want it to stay that way."

Gilbert grew up in Tweed Heads on the NSW side of the border but attended school in
Palm Beach, and spent much of his youth hanging around the Gold Coast beaches.

But he is now comfortably settled in
Melbourne suburb Elwood with Saints teammate Leigh Fisher and is playing the best football of his career, averaging 22.4 disposals per game in St Kilda's back half.

He has earned a reputation as an athletic tall player with the ability to lay a big tackle. He says he has always loved tackling, ever since his days as a junior rugby league player.

"I reckon it has a little bit to do with it. I grew up with rugby league. But I haven't done that many tackles this year compared to the midfielders and a lot of the forwards have laid a lot more tackles than me this year," he said.

"It lifts everyone and I know when I watch my tape I look at the tackles more than the possessions and I think most of the boys are doing that now. It is a good thing and something we are priding ourselves on."

Gilbert has played the majority of his career in the back half but seemed set for a change this year as he spent much of the summer learning the finer points of playing as a forward.

"I thought I might have got a sniff up there but as soon as Max went down I knew I'd be straight back to the backline," he said.

"I did the whole pre-season up forward so I know the setups and if I get thrown up there I'm more than happy to have a crack. With Kosi going down this week I don't know how they'll work it. I'm pretty sure I'll be down back but if I get the opportunity, I'll take it."

Hutchy getting desperate...

I may be alone here, very alone. But if we win a premiership in the near future, i wouldn't have any problem in Roo leaving us for the Gold Coast after it. In a perfect world winning the premiership and keeping Roo as a one club player would be ideal. But if he wants to go, and the club are happy with it, id be fine with it. Once again IF we win a premiership in that time.

Saints hope King fit to face Dogs

Emma Quayle | April 26, 2009

ST KILDA is optimistic that Steven King will be available next weekend, despite the ruckman experiencing hamstring soreness in Friday night's big win over Port Adelaide.

King spent the second half in tracksuit pants on the bench, but Saints football manager Greg Hutchison said yesterday that the club, well in control at half-time, had been able to play it safe with the veteran.

"He had some genuine soreness and tightness and it was nothing more than that, but given the position we were in at that stage in the game, we weren't forced to put him back on and take the risk that he'd do more damage," Hutchison said. "He'll go through the normal processes this week and he's no certainty to play, but fingers crossed we got him off early enough in the game. We've got a seven-day break for our next game and, hopefully, that gives him enough time."

Hutchison said Justin Koschitzke, who missed the 66-point win over the Power with a hamstring strain, was also some chance to play against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, but the club would know more by midweek.

Full-back Max Hudghton, who has battled a calf problem since the start of the season, may also resume this week. "I'd expect Max to be ready to play, but he's a bit like Steven and 'Kosi'. We have a long week and three training sessions before we play our next game, so we'll find out where they're all at."

Re: Media Thread

Lol if we won a flag, and then managed to give Roo to the GC, for like picks 1, 3 and 5 for instance...

I'd just about drive Roo up there myself!

He gets us a flag, I'd be more than happy to see him leave the club after 10 years of service.

Not to mention those picks would set us up immensely for the future.

But lets talk about it when it happens. ;)

Re: Media Thread

I wouldn't let him go for picks 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 11 !

He is and always should remain a St Kilda legend !

And who will captain us for the three-peat ?

Re: Media Thread

Would the addition of pick 10 sway you Holden?;)

Well, maybe - my idea was for GC to use that pick to get Buddy Franklin who would then be added to the compensation for Nick Riewoldt.

Actually, better add Cyril Rioli and Luke Hodge, too.

Ex-Saints staffer queries AFL inquiry on alleged comment

A KEY witness has gone public to put the thunder back into the infamous "Whispers in the Sky" affair.

Former St Kilda staffer Mark Parker yesterday supported claims that umpire Matthew Head made an inappropriate comment. Parker also strongly criticised the investigation that followed.

When the AFL swept this under the carpet it was certainly one of the incidents that highlighted the Vlad-lead personal vendetta against St Kilda at the time. Yet another perk of the Thomas era.

i reckon if roo was less level headed he'd belt that fat fool into next week. seriously, he must get sick of it. hutchy has a viewpoint and he is pushing it. get rid of him, and bring back scotty palmer and his punchlines full time!

I look forward to reading the alpha article.

Anyone see the other rumour, that Gilbert and Armo ( i think it was) are among the targets as well?
