2009 National Draft

DeBoer and Broughton will be elevated, Grover will move to the veterans list and Foster will be delisted.

If we can get one of Smith, Ball or Macdonald to enter the PSD and not the ND then we will save a pick, otherwise we will use 6 in the National Draft. I doubt we'll be using 6 picks in the ND and 1 in the PSD.

#4 - Morabito
#20 - Taylor
#36 - Houghton
#48 - Hutchings
#49 - Astbury/Grimes/Luff

#52 - Davies/Long/Tutt
PSD - ???

Then get me Kickett, M Taylor and a ruckman in the rookie draft, and I'll be one happy supporter.

I like it..altho someone like Donaldson or Hill in leiu of Hutchings might be the go.

Wouldn't we need all three or atleast 2 of them to enter the PSD? I can't see the Demons passing on any of them and I'd say Troy Simmonds and Nathan Brown would have been on a combined $800,000+ a season so Richmond should have plenty of cap space too?

Would be very happy with any of those 3 though. :thumbsu:

I've been talking up Houghton for a while now, I'm hoping we take him with our third rounder. Chances are he will start getting talked up beyond belief on BigFooty now, but I don't think he'll be pushing up into the second round. Pick 36 is probably around the earliest I think he'll go, and hopefully we do jump at him.

Houghton attended the WA state screening, which means only a couple of teams nominated him. I think he'd be on a few more teams radars after his results, but top 20 seems quite unlikely to me at least.

Butcher, Carlisle, Black, Griffiths, Fitzpatrick and Panos are all highly regarded KPP's and they have been all year, not just late season bolters based on a highlights video. Throw in the fact that the top midfield prospects are streets ahead of the top KPP's, and I just can't see Houghton being picked before Pick 36.

Panos and Daw had their time, Taylor got a bit of a run and now it looks like its Houghton's time to get talked up.

Chris, I see that u have Freo selecting Luff in your phantom draft. I know u really cant judge a player by short videos, but please tell me he is better than what i have seen on you tube. This particular 'highlights' reel is hardly an endorsement.

That kid can play! "Knows where the goals are".

Yeah, I like the way he plays on instinctively and had good awareness/vision to hand off to teammates in better position and shepherd for them. Hope Chris is right and he doesn't go early.
Any details on size/age/most annoying teammate? ;)

18 and ~195cm.

For a bloke his height to be quite happy to run with the ball at full tilt, and not look unco in the process (poor Tomahawk) is impressive in itself. Nice mobility.

If we got him, I'd chuck him straight into the side on the other flank to Chris Mayne while we fatten him up. Then stick him at CHF for 10 years.

Chris, while we're talking KPP, who performed best in the speed/agility/vertical leap tests?

The bolded names are all KPP's. Kennedy is more of a third tall forward and Shaw is more of a third tall defender rather than genuine talls though.

All-round, Houghton probably performed better than the other talls. Fitzpatrick and Reid were two of the better performing talls at the Draft Camp.

If anyone has been following it on the AFL website, Matt Burgan has been rating the draft chances of the 74 players who attended the draft camp.

Here is a summary of everyone, I've grouped them according to the latest that he has them going. The numbers in the brackets are the earliest Burgan has them going, quite a range for some of the later players....

Also, as people always seem to be the most interested in talls, I've made them purple.

Due to the dearth of quality talls I reckon what ones there are will go early - ie they will be overvalued.

IMO Talia, Carlisle, Butcher, Black and Fitzpatrick will go before our pick 20.

Assuming we take Mora at 4 thats we have a choice of Griffiths, Craig, Houghton, Reid, Astbury, Panos or Hartigan at 20. Bear in mind that Mora is a 191cm 6,3 in the old money

The other alternative is that we take Black/Butcher at at 4 and pick up T taylor or a quality mid like Sheppard, Stevens or Bastinac at 20.

I am starting to lean towards the latter.

#4 - Morabito
#20 - Taylor
#36 - Houghton

All 3 are tall and all 3 are versatile. Morabito is a midfielder, who could easily as a tall up forward. While Taylor could play as a small forward, 3rd tall or through the midfield.

#48 - Astbury/Grimes/Luff

Best available tall defender.

#49 - Thomas/Hutchings/Davies/Long/Carey

Best available midfielder.

#52 or PSD

Best available midfielder or whoever we can tempt into the PSD.

Someone get hold of Bondy and tell him about this young bloke Houghton. After the concessions that Western Sydney have got today, we need to get a young KPP who can read the game like this kid!!!

Don't think we would pass up on a midfielder with the reputation of Bartlett at 36. but if he's gone go tall I reckon
