2009 Player Discussion - Part 2

I know quite a few people are of the opinion that Judd is not an ideal DT player but after having a bit of a look at his seasons before the 07 groin injury I noticed something quite remarkable, he can and does score 100's quite often when fully fit, which by all reports he is heading into this season.

2007 - prior to the injury 9 games played: 8 scores above 90, 7 over 100. Other score was an 82
2006 - 19 games played: 10 scores above 100, 7 above 115, 5 other games between 90-100. Thats 15 of 19 games with scores above 90.
2005 - 21 games played: 6 scores above 100, 3 other games of 98-99.

In the 2.5 season prior to the injury Judd played 49 games and scored 23 scores over 100, another 9 were scores above 90. Thats 32 of 49 games with a score that would make him at worst a decent 6th midfield choice. In those 32 games his average was 111. Over the 49 games it was 93.7.

So with that in mind, can someone tell me again just why he is not being mentioned as a possible premium this year?

BTW, just to refresh the memory, last year: 21 games played - 7 scores above 100 4 were above 110. (Remember he was recovering from pre season surgery).

I did have Judd initially - as i was very aware of the points he could score. I fondly remember Judd scoring 170+ against brisbane having him as captain.

However - it still seems as though he is going to play the inside role for Carlton again. He won't get the marks required for DT IMO. At the eagles there were some strong older boldies that used to regularly block for him to get the ball - he won't get that protection with the younger blues midfield.

Great player - will hopefully rise back to the comp's best this year - but I think he'll be touch and go for DT

Hey? Cousins the number one tag before Chris Judd? You sure about that Dogs?

Actually Kerr got tagged about as much as well. Think about it. Judd is hardly effected by a tag so putting one on him is almost pointless, you just waste a player. Kerr can be tagged out of games so it's worth it more.

Maybe my memory is hazy. I thought the likes of Baker, Crouch, etc always went Judd.

So did i, i'm sure thats right.

Judd is more the contested ball winner at Carlton. At West Coast he could play more on the outside, not to mention Cox tapping it down to him. He was also rested up forward more, rather then coming off for a spell on the bench. I'm guessing we might see that a bit more at Carlton since he's had a big pre-season, but i can't see him getting the same scores as West Coast years. He handballs a lot more now.

Judd definitely avoided tags on occasions because the opposition coaches didn't feel it was worth the effort trying to stop him, or at least that is what the perception was at the time. I couldn't tell you who specifically went to him and who went to Cousins/Kerr though.

agree with Virgil

Come someone shed some light on J.Brennan's injury. Was in my side as a definite keeper and than got injured which killed me. I than swapped to Sylvia who was my uniqyue and was in my side during November,Dec and Jan but started getting forced out due to Brennan being a forward.

No that's not what happened. Judd was 90% of the time the first one to be tagged. Baker, Crouch, Rawlings consistently went to him. They may have changed throughout the game, but he was the first one they went to the majority of the time.

Usually they tagged two out of three of Cuz/Judd/Kerr. But pretty much always Judd.

What does anyone think of Troy Selwood? I've got him in just for a bit to add a unique player here and there, but i think he'll lift that $230k price tag.
a 92+70 in first to NAB games. Avg 80 in 07, although 52 last season.

thoughts on him?

what do you guys think of k.simpson his past 2 nab cup games his got over 100 or well gibbs judd and marc murphy steal the points of him

I wouldn't think he'd be best 22, but you're a Lions supporter so I guess you know more than me. If he is in their 22 he'll probably improve at least a little bit because of Vossy's new gameplan. I still think there are better options though.

On the subject of Vossy's new gameplan, how about Luke Power? Has averaged 100 before and I think the new high-possession gameplan will suit him and could lead to him averaging that again.

Well i would put him in our best 22... but i suppose he could be a pretty big risk.

Hmm Power...i see better choices around him. Sticking to the Brisbane theme im tipping Dalziell to avg up there with the best.

dont know if this is a repost but...

"Harvey declared Fremantle would start the season against the Bulldogs with Paul Hasleby and Stephen Hill in the line-up. "

gives me a bit more confidence with starting hill. and i think if hill plays the first 3-5 games and gets rested, suban is then likely to play if he hasnt already. so im fairly confident starting hill and having suban and a rance/petrenko/another 86k rookie on the bench.

He was also in my team for abit but I feel theres more secure options at his price. I do feel his spot isnt secure.
Dalgunziel has I think pushed him to a fringe player.
Add Rich to the mix good chance he will be fighting for a spot on the Interchange bench.

Liam Anthony's a lock in my midfield. Been racking up big numbers and I expect him to play Round 1. Ziebell I'm not sure about for my forward line though.

What are people's thoughts on Sammy Fisher? Has been great the last few years, but looks to have a thighter defensive role, with Goddard and Gram mopping up and pushing into midfield. Seems he will score less this year?

McPhee's role is fairly uncertain. He could be used forward or back, and will likely get swung between the two. Unfortunately that leads to very inconsistent scoring. He might score 90 in defence mopping up one week, then 40 up forward the next. That's whats kept me away from him.

Don't think he'll play forward much, if at all this year TBH. With Lucas, Lloyd, Neagle and Gumbleton, i wouldn't think they'd need another tall forward. I think he could get back to his sweeping role down back, playing on that 3rd/4th tall each week.
