Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

It's taken me ages, but I have finally completed my third straigh mock draft (fingers crossed it goes well again this year). I have decided to change it up a little in terms of what each club gets, because this year is just so even. I've also thrown in a few VFL/ Mature aged guys who might get a crack.

Opinions would be great :)

Pick: 1 (Melbourne) Tom Scully
Why?
Probably the best player in the draft at the moment. Ready made and great leadership skills. Will be a star.

Pick 2 (Melbourne): Jack Trengove
Why?
Talented midfielder who can play a variety of positions. Has been talked up as top two for a long time now, and looks the only possibility to take the pick 1 title from Scully.

Pick 3 (Richmond): Dustin Martin
Why?
Richmond really need a talented inside midfielder and this kid just oozes class. Great on both sides of his body and will look to feed the ball to the mountains of outside midfielders currently at Richmond.

Pick 4 (Fremantle): Anthony Morabito
Why?
Excellent tall running midfielder who has that ex factor. Looks the type of player that you can build your team around. Has all the class in the world and surely Fremantle will not let him slip?

Pick 5: (North) – Ben Cunnington
Why?
This bloke will be a star. Super strong and can play all over the ground. Physically ready first year. Knows how to read play and oozes leadership. Future captain.

Pick 6 (Sydney): John Butcher
Why?
With Hall and O’Loughlin gone, the Swans will be wanting to boost their tall stocks. Butcher is a tall high marking forward who was touted as a top 3 selection after a sensational carnival in 2008.

Pick 7 (WC): Jake Melksham
Why?
May have gone higher if it wasn’t for his poor carnival, so he may be the type of player that drops to the cats or demons later in the draft. That being said, the Eagles have a history of taking quality midfielders early, and Melksham at his best is quality.

Pick 8 (Port): Gary Rohan
Why?
Electric, and has so much untapped potential. Could go from pick 4 to pick 20, but surely a team will be willing to take the risk. Can make the impossible look easy, and the easy look impossible. Reminds me of a Jarred Brennan type player. He will bring people through the gates.

Pick 9 (Port): Kane Lucas
Why?
Half back/ midfield type who has always been pretty highly rated. Port need more players like Lucas as they look to add more quality to the team. Rohan and Lucas together is a great start.

Pick 10 (Essendon): Lewis Jetta
Why?
Could go to West Coast ealier, but Lewis is a much more talented Leroy. Very freakish in his abilities and with the loss of Lovett, the Bombers might think that Lewis is a real option for them. This may also bring the best out of Leroy who has struggled so far at Bomberland.

Pick 11 (Melbourne): Aaron Black
Why?
A real work in progress. Generally used as a forward, but can go back and also pinch hit in the ruck (maybe not at AFL level?). With the best two midfielders in the land in their hands, the Demons will be looking to bolster their tall stocks.

Pick 12 (Carlton): Jake Carlisle
Why?
Might be taken a bit early here by the Blues who are looking for another genuine key position player. Like Jake as a key forward, but if needed could be moulded into a backman.

Pick 13 (Adelaide): Luke Tapscott
Why?
Best available here for Adelaide. Tapscott has some serious talent, and being a local boy, the Crows will be very keen to get their hands on him.

Pick 14 (Sydney): Koby Stevens
Why?
With a few of their star midfielders looking like they will be finishing up soon, Stevens looks the logical player to take here. Excellent leadership and a hard skilful player. Would fit in at Sydney easily.

Pick 15 (Western Bulldogs): Daniel Talia
Why?
Played a variety of positions and acquitted himself well in all of them. The Doggies look like they need a big, tall target and they get that here with Talia.

Pick 16 (Port Adelaide): Ryan Bastinac
Why?
Looks to be a tough gun inside player, something Port should be recruiting more of. Also looks the most logical “best available” choice.

Pick 17 (Geelong): Ben Griffiths
Why?
The delisting of McKenna and Scott Simpson would suggest that Geelong is looking for a couple of key position players. Griffiths is a freak overhead and a very good set shot at goal. A very attractive option at pick 17.

Pick 18 (Melbourne): Jasper Macmillan - Pittard
Why?
Melbourne look like they need a player that can run and carry the b all and Jasper does this. Was good during the carnival at times, but also lost his mind as well. Interesting player who could got top 10.

Pick 19 (Richmond): Matthew Panos
Why?
Richmond need key position players, and Panos as key position written all over him. Looks a likely type and would be well suited down at punt road.

Pick 20 (Fremantle): Joshua Donaldson
Why?
Could be the first real bolter this year, wth Donaldson having an exceptional carnival despite being played out of position. Fremantle need a tall athletic player, and that is what Josh brings to the table.

Pick 21 (North): Mitch Duncan
Why?
Creative player who has great goal sense and can kick the ball pretty well. Has shown he can play senior football over in WA and do very well. That form generally stacks up come draft day. Logical choice here for the Kangas.

Pick 22 (West Coast): Brad Sheppard
Why?
Key position defender who plays the way West Coast like. He is a play maker, but can also be used defensively. Has the all round game.

Pick 23 (West Coast): Jordan Gysberts
Why?
Interesting player, atheletic enough to play as a midfielder, but can also push forward and be damaging. Could he find a position at AFL level? His performances suggest he will, but he has a real “?” over him for mine.

Pick 24 (Essendon): Callum Bartlett
Why?
Missed the year with injury, but looked really promising before that. Genuine tough midfielder who would add a lot of grunt to the Dons side.

Pick 25 (North Melbourne): Andrew Moore
Why?
Very good utility who can be played anywhere that he is needed. Rated very highly by the Vic Metro coaching staff. North need this medium size type player who can do damage through the middle, but also rest up forward.

Pick 26 (Essendon): Luke Ball
Why?
The Dons will want to swoop on ball. If not he will go to Brisbane at pick 27.

Pick 27 (Brisbane): Jesse Crichton
Why?
Small framed player who could very well slip out to later in the draft. Given the Lions midfield depth they could keep Crichton on ice for a few years and give him time to develop. Longer term prospect in my books.

Pick 28 (Geelong): Allen Christensen
Why?
Allen looks like he will be a gem, but a poor finish to the year might see him drop to pick 20+. My favourite player in the draft.

Pick 29 (Adelaide): Jack Fitzpatrick
Why?
A developing ruckman who could fit into the Crows plans at this pick. His athletic ability could see him go even earlier, but it is so even this year.

Pick 30 (Collingwood): David Astbury
Why?
Has a lot to learn and with the Pies current KP stocks he could be given that time. Looks to be highly talented, but the club who takes him needs to have patience.

Pick 31 (Western Bulldogs): Alex Carey
Why?
Maybe doesn’t have that pace that is needed, but his skills and natural ability outweigh that. Could very well slide with that query over his pace. If recruiters don’t think its and issue then he could go pick 20 – 40.

Pick 32 (St Kilda): Nathan Vardy
Why?
The Saints need a ruck and Vardy looks a nice option here. Probably the most talented ruck in the draft.

Pick 33 (Essendon): James Craig
Why?
Too small to be a ruck, but that is where he plays his best football. The Dons aren’t short of key position players, but this guy rates highly. He still has a lot to learn and if given the time to develop could become a very handy player.

Pick 34 (Melbourne): Sam Reid
Why?
Athletic player who has an elite leap and decent skills around the ground. A nice medium to tall height type player who could hold down a spot down back for Melbourne in the future.

Pick 35 (Richmond): Nat Fyfe
Why?
Creative guy who seems to have a bit of that “X” factor about him. Richmond need avenues to goal and this guy gives them that.

Pick 36 (Fremantle): Kyle Hartigan
Why?
A strong bodied KPP who look could not be picked up at all or be a 20+ pick player. Fremantle need to sure up their back stocks and Hartigan gives them a good option

Pick 37 (North): – [/b] – Simon Potts
Why?
Has improved a heap this year and is now a genuine draft option. I have him a bit early, but I think he will really impress some clubs and North might just bite the bullet and take him earlier then what a lot of clubs would.

Pick 38 (Sydney): Dylan Jones
Why?
Hit up type player who has gone back, but has also been used in the ruck and up forward. Roos would like this as he could mould him to what his team needs. Given the job he has done on Butcher in the champs, Jones is a genuine KPD prospect.

Pick 39 (Hawthorn): Tom Nicholls
Why?
Tall bloke who hasn’t played a heap of footy. Very tall and looks a good prospect. With the Hawks ruck stocks shakey, they may look to sure up with Nicholls.

Pick 40 (Geelong): Troy Taylor
Why?
A problem child who has found an avenue through football. His problems will surely affect his chances of being drafted, and this is why I see him dropping from a genuine second round to pick 40+. Would be great to see him succeed.

Pick 41 (North): Mark Hutchings
Why?
Rawlings is aging and Hutchings could be their next stopper. Has shown that he has an attacking part to his game, kicking some goals. Very honest player. Won’t be a superstar but what you see is what you get!!

Pick 42 (Geelong): Andrew Hooper
Why?
Securing a midfielder and two forwards, Geelong will be looking to fix their defenders now with Milburn, Harley and Scarlett on the way out. Hooper is an exceptional player, built like a tank and plays a very aggressive style. Reminds me a bit of Josh Hunt in some cases. The question over him is his height. Geelong may see his future as bright and this should sway them.

Pick 43 (Carlton): Ayden Kennedy
Why?
Has come from a long way back to be in draft contention. In between height which would see him develop into a smaller lead up type player in the mould of O’Keefe from Sydney.

Pick 44 (Richmond): Justin Bollenhagen
Why?
In a team full of average disposal, Bollenhagen’s disposal is A grade and that is what will lure Richmond to him. You can teach a player where to run and what to do, but they are no good if they can’t kick the footy straight.

Pick 45 (Adelaide): Dylan Grimes
Why?
Played out of his weight this year and would be suited to a smaller type role as a medium defender. Has showed that he has a lot of talent, but he does lack some body strength.

Pick 46 (Hawthorn): Myles Sewell
Why?
Deserves his chance and is a good chance to join his brother at the Hawks.

Pick 47 (Brisbane): Byron Sumner
Why?
Would have gone earlier had he gone to draft camp, but missed it to play in a grand final. Electric aboriginal player that would fit in well under Voss’ structure.

Pick 48 (Fremantle): Derick Wanganeen
Why?
Looks a talented player who could go on at the next level. Fremantle don’t have much to lose with this selection and with Derick’s bloodlines he is a decent chance.

Pick 50 (Melbourne): Travis Colyer
Why?
A quick midfielder who has good evasive skills. May not be the most talented, but worth a risk later on in the draft.

Pick 51 (Richmond): Sam Shaw
Why?
Key defender who would slip in very well at Richmond. May go a little earlier, but it is just so open so he might slip down a little bit. Looks to have the talent, but just needs to keep working at it.

Pick 52 (Fremantle): Danel Menzal
Why?
Could become a very good link up player. One for the future and needs a good few seasons under his belt to develop. His skills are improving and he looks like a good little player.

Pick 53 (North): Nick Winmar
Why?
North would be looking for another tall forward, and Winmar ticks the boxes. Nice size and can hold down a key spot despite his shorter height. Very good runner which should see him as a lead up type player.

Pick 54 (Sydney): Cameron Milne
Why?
With Jolly gone and the Swans ruck stocks down, Milne might be the type of player they look for. Tested really well and has the height and physical attributes to make it. The question has to be asked about whether he is attacking enough?

Pick 55 (Sydney): Luke McDonald
Why?
19 year old talented key position forward who led the TAC cup goal kicking this year. Worth a late pick, and he could have gone much earlier had it not been for injuries later in the year. Sydney have nothing to lose with thi pick.

Pick 56 (Geelong): Kyle Hardingam
Why?
Medium sized third tall defender who can also push forward. Not the youngest at 21, however if Drum fails then Kyle could be a chance for senior football next year. The Cats may go young with this pick, however Kyle has been exceptional this year.

Pick 57 (Hawthorn): Jesse Smith
Why?
Geelong will be keen at 56, but if he has nominated a price then the Cats won’t be able to take him. This leaves the Hawks as his only other real option.

Pick 58 (Hawthorn): Zac Ledin
Why?
Needs to work on his endurance and strength, but he can find his own footy and generally uses the ball pretty well. Has had the extra 12 months in the system which would have really helped his development.

Pick 59 (Carlton): Jason Tutt
Why?
Could be a slider due to clubs needing to fill other holes, but Tutt looks a decent prospect. Good pace and very good skills means he could very well go earlier. The question though is if he meets what other teams need?

Pick 60 (St Kilda): Trent Dennis-Lane
Why?
Seems like a prospect that is “ready to go” after a blitzing year this year. The Saint might look at him as an option to their small forward line.

Pick 61 (Adelaide): Christian Howard
Why?
Great kick of the footy and is still learning about what it takes to be an AFL footballer. Has a lot to still work on, but the basic skills are there.

Pick: 62 (Collingwood) Joseph Groenewegen
Why?
A tall player who will need time to develop. With Jolly and Fraser and Wood as cover, the Pies can give Joseph 4 years to develop

Pick 63 (Western Bulldogs): Patrick Rose
Why?
Always has been there and about. Is a creative forward who is very dangerous. Worth a late selection.

Pick 64 (St Kilda): Clay Beams
Why?
Hasn’t played a heap of football, but people report he is up there with his brother. The Saints have slim pickings at this selection and may be swayed to take a punt on the kid.

Pick 65 (Geelong): Marcus Darmody
Why?
Very hard selection this one as like Dare from the Falcons as well (Could go to Geelong earlier in the draft anway). Darmody is an interesting type, can play forward and back both very well. A wirery type player, but his ability should see him taken.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

Nice one rizzo - was beginning to wonder if you were going to get it out in time :D

Good to see a few different names thrown up and also happy to see you didn't get too caught up in the McMillian-Pittard/Bartlett hyperbole that is currently swirling around BF at the moment (i.e. - top 10/low teen pick). Although I do have to wonder at the bias of getting your boy down to the cattery ;)

Also - I am missing something? Where is Pick 49??

Top work once again :thumbsu:

Now, I also need something cleared up (this is for anyone) - I understand Foxtel is showing the draft tomorrow night but the programming is only showing 1 hour (which I'll assume is just for the top 10).

Am I right in assuming that is all that is being shown on either cable or free-to-air?

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

A great article in The Age today

http://www.theage.com.au/news/rfnews/mcmaster-of-his-trade/2009/11/24/1258824712384.html

Football's first full-time recruiter, now 80, believes it's what you can't measure that makes a player.
THERE'S a book's worth of recruiting tales in Bill McMaster, and it's an oldie but a goodie that captures the essence of football divining: no matter the era, the recruiter lives and dies on the sharpness of his eye, and the strength of his luck.
McMaster had rucked his way to two premierships for Geelong, wrecked his ankle, headed back to the bush aged 24, and bobbed up coaching Mortlake when he learnt an early lesson in the trade. He'd heard about a young gun playing for Derrinallum, so when Mortlake had a bye one Saturday, he and the local policeman headed out along the Hamilton Highway to take a look...

...It is staggering to ponder that every player to join Geelong in the past 36 years has been recruited by McMaster or Wells...

I believe that to be the case. I will be tuning into SEN on the way home from work. The broadcast starts at 6pm so should be pretty comprehensive.

Cheers - kinda makes the live telecast a bit redundant for teams like us, Saints, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Bullies etc etc

I was hoping they would maybe do the first and second rounds at least. I mean Foxtel does have 5 channels or something stupid, surely they could have set one night aside for it instead of Poker or Boxing. *LOL* Bring back the Fox Footy Channel!!

Reverting back to the radio then. Cheers YOTC

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

I've liked the look of Jake Carlisle in what i've seen of him and have been hoping we'd pick him up.

Now it appears the Burger reckons we might pick him up too.

Liking the sound of that :thumbsu:

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

Don't get too excited. Burgan's picks for us last year were nowhere near it, but his draft in 07 was pretty accurate - correctly predicted Simpson and then had us taking Bellchambers rather than big Dawson.

In retrospect I'd prefer Bellchambers to Simpson

I'd be happy with the first three picks. The last two are a bit meh for me

Yeh I don't think he has ever got our first pick correct - or not for the past 4-5 years anyway. Reading through his draft there appears to be very few players he has linked us too. I wonder whether he finds it difficult to get any info out of Wells and co.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

So, on broader reflection:

Not a bad set of picks from Burgan. The knock on Carlisle is his pace off the mark, but that was the BF consensus on Hurley as well - need anything more be said? Not convinced by the need for Dare as a Milburn replacement (how many do we need?) but looks a good solid player anyway. The talk of good footskills throughout the guys we've selected is encouraging, and while I'm not sold on Christensen he probably represents good value at #40.

Also, word is now that WCE are taking Brad Sheppard at #7. I hope too many hearts haven't broken at the news.

Oh yea of little faith :p

Dawson will come good, particularly as he should be getting more time in the ruck with the departure of Mumford.

I'd be happy with the first three picks. The last two are a bit meh for me
You'd have seen a fair bit of Fisher rizzo: what's your opinion of him?

Yeh I don't think he has ever got our first pick correct - or not for the past 4-5 years anyway. Reading through his draft there appears to be very few players he has linked us too. I wonder whether he finds it difficult to get any info out of Wells and co.
I think everyone finds it hard to get info out of Wells. Even Quayle has gotten it wrong. He must play them very, very close to the chest.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

I'm not sold on Christensen but you'd have to say getting him at Pick 40 would be a massive win - would represent very good value.

I like the Carlisle and Dare selections - one guy that can play forward or back and another guy who is a great reader of the play and plays taller than his listed height suggests.

The other two I know nothing about.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

Unless another rookie selection passes him by again  But I hear what you are saying.

Wells is always pretty vague when he gets asked this time of the year - one quote I saw said something along the lines of "we have 5 picks so we'll be able to address all our needs" :D Means other people have to work out where the inner circle believes the list weaknesses lie.

Carlise is good, but I rate Griffiths higher. Carlisle is immense is a contest (lacks some vertical leap?) and as you mentioned not the fastest. I'd see him develop into a key back IMHO.

You'd have seen a fair bit of Fisher rizzo: what's your opinion of him?

A less flashy Cunnington. Does everything right, but not elite at anything. Wouldn't be bad late, but I rate my last two selections of my mock draft (burger doesn't have them going) as much better.

I'm not sold on Christensen but you'd have to say getting him at Pick 40 would be a massive win - would represent very good value.

I'm not sold on Christensen he probably represents good value at #40.

This kid is a serious talent, and has a lot of untapped potential. Getting him with our second pick is a steal, pick 40 is highway robbery. Allen will be a genuine star.

The other two I know nothing about.

Howard has come a long way, but his disposal is seriously A grade.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

Jester you have allayed a few of my fears about Carlisle's lack of acceleration with the Hurley comment!!! He certainly is great overhead and has nice kicking skills.

IF we were to get Christensen that low it would be a bonus. Dare looks a good old fashioned type to me.

I suppose it is hard to have too high expectations from a draft having just won a flag. Would much rather it that way too!!

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

I actually really like Burgan's picks for us. I'd be pretty happy with Carlise. I think he could play a versatile role similar to North's Petrie which is exactly what we need. I think he sounds quite promising.

If the draft went down exactly as he has mentioned I be happy enough with:

17) - Carlisle - KP defender
28) - Dare - Medium defender
40) - Christensen - Inside mid
42) - G.O'keefe - Medium forward/midfielder
+ Laidler Elevated
+ Daniel O'keefe rookie listed

I reckon all of those guys have AFL potential despite the week draft and we'd have a very competitive VFL team:

FB: Carlisle Gillies Taylor-Hunt
HB: Dare Lonergan Laidler
C: Hogan G.Okeefe Djerkurra
HF: Gamble Brown D.O'keefe
FF: Moles Pods Motlop
R: West Christensen Byrne
Int: D.Simpson, Ranga A.Varcoe

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

It certainly looks a good outfit. But a couple of comments:

- We're going to be using #56, aren't we?
- If Hunt replaces Harley in the seniors, Drum will presumably be playing VFL.
- And you've left out Allwright - handy flanker at the moment.
- Has Moles been delisted?
- We've got 3-4 picks in the rookie draft on top of who we get tomorrow; if we rookied McKenna, one (or both) of the O'Keefes and someone like McNeill or Priest (both of who looked good playing VFL with us this year), our VFL side would look alright.

56 would be a rookie elevation isn't it? Otherwise I'd be happy with D.Okeefe

Forgot about Alright and I guess you'd slot Drum in the backline somewhere if he's not in the first team. With the rest of the rookie picks we certainly will be a lot stronger than last year IMO and I am a lot more positive about their potential in terms of making the grade for AFL.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch - Version 2009

As I just posted on the mail board, I'm praying we pick up Callum Bartlett from the Geelong Falcons.

I like the way he moves. Watch him in action. http://www.afl.com.au/video/tabid/76...s/default.aspx

Burgan has him going at pick 27 to Brisbane, but I would not be unhappy if we picked him up with pick 17. Would be a bonus if he is still around at 28.

Reminds me of Hodge in some of his plays.
