No doubt we had a few things go in our favour last year and were unlucky not to make the 4 in the end. However others will not doubt not agree but IMO I think the comp in 2008 made us look better than we were.

Agree, but that in no way suggests that we struggled to make the 8, maybe in another year we would have, but it wasn't another year and in the minor round, we proved ourselves to be better than 11 other sides, shame we couldn't translate this into major round form. We struggled more to make the 8 in 07 than we did in 08, in 07 we had to win our final 3 matches against fellow finals aspirants and that was just to finish 8th, in 08 it we almost made the 4 after upsetting the 3rd ranked side.

Lets face it, last year we were basically making up the numbers 4-8 those sides had little or no chance of making the GF.

Whilst I would love to see T Walker kick more than 30 goals I doubt it. I also reckon Tippet is going to be playing 2nd or 3rd ruck this season.

Someone in this thread said they expect Walker to kick 75 goals:eek: We will once again struggle to put a score on the board, and we dont have some players developed enough to win the close ones.

I have faith in Tippet, Porps and someone like Vince to step up to score goals.

I'm not sure about the close ones however.

Completely off topic....

Q. Who was the player (Kangaroos i think) who announced his retirement and later appeared on the footy show and said he would try to injure himself at trainings?

If you think there are going to be no retirements you have no idea about list management
A player choosing to retire and the club managing its list by delisting an older player aren't the same thing :)

just guessing....

I don't think we'll see much of Porps in the middle this year. NC has made mention of him as a forward quite a bit this year already. We need a decent target up forward, and despite the hype on this board (and everywhere else), we cannot rely on Walker to be our go to man, its both unfair and unrealistic. With Burton out, Porps will play the majority of the year up forward.
Where and when has Craig made all these mentions of Porps playing mainly in the forward line? I seem to recall him saying that Jason would spend time on ball and up forward, which is fair enough given how damaging he can be in both roles. He's way too talented and creative around the stoppages to be left languishing up forward near permanently though. I'm also expecting our forward structure to be vastly improved on the often shambolic efforts of last season and with any luck there won't be as much of a desperate need for Porps up there as was the case in 08.

I think Porps is far too talented and creative up forward to be left in the middle. He can win games off his own boot up forward. (sydney & north games last year). We have good midfield depth and generally get the ball into 50 enough times to win, classy finishers are what we need most and thats what porps is. He would be a star in the middle as well but I think in our side he has much more influence kicking goals. His marking ability for a small foward is exceptional which could be wasted through the middle. I reckon up forward with short bursts through the middle if he or the side is struggling.

How can you be too talented and creative to play in the midfield? You'd rather him be stuck at HFF/FP where even the very best players drift in and out of games? We don't have enough quality midfield depth at all. We desperately need more genuine class through there and Porps is the silkiest player we have. You say we get the ball forwards often enough - well yeah okay if you count either directing the ball to our opponents advantage or mindlessly bombing it onto the heads of our players as a decent inside 50 entry then maybe we do. Besides, how often do you think he's going to win games off his own boot playing up forward? You don't build a forward line around 180cm players. Porps will split his time between midfield and forward line. And rightly so.

FFS it has to be said again, the only reason Porps was up forward in Season 2008 was because of his shoulder, the shoulder he did in the round 3 showdown. In round 1 and 2 as well as the first part of round 3 Porps was in the guts, he was our best player in round 1 against the bulldogs playing in the middle, his clearence work is near second to none. While he was great upforward in patches he did float in and out of games as is the nature of playing as a small-medium forward, he IS too good a player when fit to be played completely up forward, he should be on the ball and rested as a forward pocket.

FFS!

He is better at delivering the ball to the forwards than he is finishing at goal even though he is brilliant at that, see Qualifying final 2006 for a prime example as to why Porps should be played in the middle, anyone remember his boundary line run of brilliance?

As soon as we get some forwards, we'll be sure to play him there.

HE WAS PLAYED THERE, IN THE MIDDLE BEFORE HE DID HIS SHOULDER, THE ONLY REASON HE WAS PLAYED IN THE FORWARD LINE WAS BECAUSE HE DID HIS SHOULDER!!!!!!!! NOT BECAUSE WE LACK FORWARDS FFS. WHEN FIT IN 2009 HE WILL PLAY PRIMARILY IN THE MIDFIELD NOT UP FORWARD.

How hard is it to understand this? I guess this is Bigfooty.......

take it easy chief. i totally disagree.

Should Porplyzia be fit and have an extended run in the midfield, he will become an elite AFL midfielder. He is a smooth mover, has the balance, poise and more imprtantly, the brain of a potential superstar.

If Porplyzia is relied on to play forward, the Crows will have gone backwards in my opinion. Yes, he is brilliant in that role, but I am sure if he was placed in the back pocket, he would also excel in this position. This isn't to say that Craigy is going to place him on the last line of defence in a hurry.

Midfield is where he has to play and if he does, the crows will be a 4-5 goal better side with the opporunities he can create.

Not hard to understand but yes your right this is bigfooty, Ive shaken my head at this thread at those that have suggested he will be our leading goal kicker in 09, if thats the case the AFC have more issues than I ever imagined:eek:
