Just gone back through the thread and we clearly have 13 nuff nuffs who know nothing about football by suggesting Porps will be our leading goal kicker in 09:eek::rolleyes:

He was 2 goals off being our leading goalkicker last year.
I'm not sure why you think that's such a stupid call. I'd say it's at least as likely as Walker, a zero gamer at this stage, being our highest scorer. A couple of injuries, or form slumps here and there and we might find ourselves relying on Porplyzia's goalscoring ability. It would not be an ideal scenario, no, but that doesn't make it an unlikely one.

This club is in a position of not having a number one forward.

We have Gill, can't kick stright, Walker, hasn't played a game, Tippett, project player. We've had the roo as our leading goal kicker, Welsh who was a medium forward, etc etc

People suggesting Porps are suggesting him because he's a class player who has no probs kicking 2 a game.

Yes you'd want to see him in the middle, but he'll no doubt rest up forward or even more likely be played of the HFF. He's got just as much chance to win the goal kicking as a kid who hasn't played a game (Tails was my choice, just playing devils advocate).

As it was mentioned his shoulder injury forced him to move forward. From 09 and beyond we need to develop a good solid young forwardline, we also need to develop a good solid midfield, Porps will be apart of that and if we are requiring him to play forward then something is very a-miss.

He may rest up forward but we cant expect him to be our leading forward, he has way too much abilty to waste in the forwardline, yep he may bob up and kick 1-2 a game and I will be wrapped if he does but I will be pissed if at the end of 09 he is our leading goal kicker.

So what?
Who's to say Porps won't do his shoulder again, or a few of our young forwards get injured, or a couple of our young midfielders have huge breakout seasons meaning we don't require Porplyzia in the guts as much? Hell, even in the first few rounds when he did get a lot of time in the middle, he still spent a significant amount of each game up forward anyway.

I hope it's not the case either, but predicting Porps as our top scorer certainly doesn't mean you know nothing about football. It's not a hugely unlikely scenario.

I agree that Porps will spend a lot of time in the midfield, but unfortunately he lacks the natural aerobic ability to spend huge spells in there and hence will still spend a decent amount of time up forward. In playing such a role, I feel that its quite conceivable that he could average 2 goals a game, which will put him around the 40-45 mark.

Realistically, who else is going to consistently score much more than this?

I think Tippet might be around the 30-40 mark. We can't expect much more than 20 from Walker. Gill's a bit of an unknown factor, could kick 40+ given a whole preseason and a full 22 games, but I wouldn't bank on anything from Gill. Goodwin maybe, but then there's whispers that he may play in defence. Edwards might if he's relieved of midfield duties to play a small forward role, similar to Mcleod if he's played forward. Stevens, maybe if he plays forward. Hentschel, I'm not banking on anything from him. Who else is there? Douglas?

Unfortunately our lack of a 50+ goal a year forward will be unlikely to be fixed this year, we will still rely on a contribution from many differnt players and I feel that its quite conceivable that a midfielder/forward with the class and goal kicking sense of Porplyzia could win our goal kicking with around 40 goals. My feeling is that we will have 4 or 5 blokes between the 30 and 45 mark.

Get ready Boys & Girls, I've been predicting this for the last 3 years, McCleod is going to have an absolute cracker of a year.
Its his last year, hes a veteran with no more lofty expectations, no tagger, all the focus will be on the young guys. He will simply enjoy his footy and run amock in the backlines being a ball magnet. I guarantee it.

I'm not so sure that I appreciate being called a nuff nuff who clearly knows nothing about football just because I think that Porps will be our leading goal-kicker this year.

As you are so confident that he won't and prepared to name call those that think he will, if Porps is our leading goal-kicker for this year, are you prepared to change your user name to

nuff_nuff_no1 ???

Sorry I had to drag you into the nuff nuff basket:eek: hell why not if Im wrong I will change my user name to that for a whole year:thumbsu::p

Im pretty sure games are won by kicking the highest score. Which would make the fowardline and kicking goals fairly important one would imagine. Porps wont be the main forward Tippet, Hentchel/Gill and Walker will hopefully be the key position fowards. It is still very important to have a match winning small foward.

The way i look at it.

These players on our list can play a midfield role at a similar level to Porps
- Edwards, Thompson, Van berlo, Reilly, Knights, Mackay, Goodwin, Vince.

Who can play the small forward role to a level comparable to jason?
Nobody..... Thompson maybe.

So we have to allocate our resources to where they are most needed. Which means Porps will have to play majority foward, maybe swapping with Thompson for short bursts in the middle. Nothing wrong with that. Whats better than watching J.Porplyzia kick four goals in a quarter?

Didn't Darren Jarman play in the midfield in 1998 and 1999? however he also won the goal kicking both years with 45 and 58 goals respectively for the season.

Yes he did spend time as a forward, just as Jason Porplyzia will do in 2009. There is no reason why Porps cannot kick 40 plus goals playing as a midfielder/forward.

Walker has played zero game, cannot see him kicking more than 40 for the season. Tippett has played 19 games and may get close to 40 but not real sure about that. With no Brett Burton for 1/2 to 3/4 of the season, this leaves Porps.
