Mate, you use ROOKIE DRAFT PICKS to draft ROOKIES.

Assuming we do no more trades, I hope to hell we're planning to delist at least FIVE players, because if we're not we've just pulled one of the most f***ing stupid trade moves in history.
I'm as outraged as you are, but if what ashb says is correct (using ND picks to get rookies) it would give a semi-reasonable explanation. The best explanation however would be that we will use them to get Smith.

We will see tomorrow. We wouldn't have done it without a good reason.

Pretty obvious, two of those three picks will head to North for Jesse Smith IMHO.

That would seem to be the only rational explanation, which must mean that Smith's medicals have checked out (contrary to the whispers) and that North have agreed to an in principle deal.

I hope you're right.

Exactly. They know what they are doing. Surely they have earnt our faith by now? They are certainly more qualified and experienced than us experts on BF.

I don't understand what you're talking about here. Since when can you draft a rookie with a ND pick? Thats ludicrous.
Yeah I just did some looking around the AFL website and you are correct. I had not heard about it either but Ashb said it was a possibility. Must have been a mix up.

This means we must be looking to trade these picks.

Fingers crossed. Want JWS at the club badly!

I reckon the Draft Pick swap makes sense. As you all know, unlike the first dozen picks which can sorta be worked out in advance, by the time you get to 30's and 40's anyone could be picked. So if you had a player or 2 or 3 in mind for pick 33 chances are good those players will still be there by 40. If one's gone, Wells will have alternatives - no big deal.

Had we just kept 33 it'll probably go for JWS or whatever else is in the pipeline so it's lost. This way we still have trades for JWS and get a pick in the 33-40 range.

So according to the club site our trade week has worked out like this so far:

In: Marcus Drum, pick 28, pick 40, pick 42 and pick 56
Out: Shane Mumford, pick 33, pick 49

So we've switched Mummy for Drum, moved up five places in the second round, moved up 9 places in the third round, added another third round pick and moved up 9 places in the fourth round.

If true, and given our cap restraints, that's a pretty tidy weeks trading in my view.

Feel like this is the best we could have done given the situation. Will be interesting to see ehat we can swing to get JWS onboard if we can achive that for a good price would be very happy with the weeks work

You can bet your bottom dollar that the cats will trade their mid to late picks tomorrow and more than likely for Smith. A rumour doing the rounds was pick 17 but for a bloke that has strung together a handful of games over the past two years that is uncontracted and wants out means that the Kangas aren't really holding all the cards, let alone any, in those discussions. Perhaps a third and fourth rounder will get it done if everything has checked out. That is the only reason why we would have traded away pick 33 for those later picks.

Wojcinski will be offered a little more to stay now that they don't have to fork out extra $$$$ to keep Mummy and will more than likely stay on. If he himself wanted out, it would have been last year. He was shopped around due to the cap, not out of a desire to leave.

Considering we have been backed into a corner all week thanks to Mumford I am pretty impressed we've punched our way out of it in a pretty creative way.

Never considered the possibility that we were the mystery 4th team in that trade. Looking forward to seeing what we cook up tomorrow.

I’d be very surprised if we picked up two recycled players in one trade week.

I think that is us done and so we head off to the Draft with an improved draft position only one fringe player lost and a much needed back up defender gained.

Very successful week for cats.

I like what we have done so far off very limited resources and what could have been a tricky situation with Mumford. Go get Smith tomorrow if they think his body will hold up :thumbsu:

If the medicals are ok, lets grab Smith as well. Worth the risk l reckon, the kid could be a gun. Makes for a very successful week when we add some Wells magic at the draft. Mummy is a big shame but l think we did the best we could to keep him.

I'm tipping Wojak + 42 + 56 to North in return for Smith + 37.

That would leave us with picks 17, 28, 37, 40 in the draft.

Nah they won't give us a pick like that with the player. I think they will want 28 + another pick but we will force them to take 40 + 42 or one of those + 56. No idea about Wojak though, they wouldn't pursue him methinks we would have to convince them to take him. Or we could offer Wojak to Vossy, the man will trade for anything.

I am still wondering why only Geelong has salary cap problems
Whats up with Hawthorn, surely their players are not cheap?

So far, I think we are slightly worse off than what we began trade week with. Losing mumford is a big loss for us, IMO unless there is some vast improvement in young westy or D. Simpson (Blake will always be a sub-standard AFL player) we are going to struggle in the ruck when Ottens retires/gets injured.

I'm not really convinced with Drum, hopefully he can provide some depth in our backline. From all reports hes a decent player that plays his role, but lacks any real weapon. However losing pick 49 for him makes it seem alright for us.

In regards to Smith, the word is that Geelong are having doubts after seeing his medical report, which may see nothing unfold... But as we acquired 3 picks for 1 dont be surprised if we make a move on someone (perhaps Smith) tomorrow.

At the end of the day, I would be happy if we took a punt and traded picks 42 + 56 for Smith as he carries HUGE potential. If this happens I think we will come out of trade week slightly better.

We will see what happens tomorrow...

Do we have to lose Wojcinski? Important player in my book. Was vital in the Qualifying Final.

IMO would have been helpful in the 2008 Grand Final...

Young players with contracts, wait till next year and the one after will be in trouble with Buddy, Roughie, Cyril, Lewis, Mitchell and the like all wanting more coin

I read the gist from Hawthorn fans is the club front ended a lot of their high earner contracts a few years ago so they have space for now and can give the huge bucks to those forwards when they demand it.
