I know its early but what are our thoughts at improving our side for the next two years from the draft? I.e. what type of players should we be targeting even with the GC getting most of the top picks. Would we take that Gorringe guy from the SA U18s if he was available with our first pick as looking at our rucks now i feel if we had a dominant ruck it would help with our midfield in the future. But, maybe Griffin is finally coming of age? James Craig seems a little undersized, Sellar too and Moran who is injured and might not ever be a dominant ruckman? Maric will always be a passionate big man but im not sure he'll ever be more than that. So, can we safely say that our ruck stocks are good enough to win us a flag going forward or do we need to invest a first round pick in the off chance Gorringe falls to us? Is our midfield really looking that bad for the future? I'm not so sure. Maybe we're one quality midfielder short.

We need at least 3 midfielders, 1 crumber and maybe a project ruckman. Depends on how many picks we are using. We must not go after players that do not have skills no matter how quick they are.

We already have 5 ruckmen on our list (6 if you include Tippett). We won't be adding another ruckman in the ND and we certainly won't be wasting our first round selection on one. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of drafting one in the RD, but you can forget about doing it in the ND.

Who knows if Gorringe will turn out to be a superstar at AFL level. Remember Meesen? He was supposedly the best ruckman in his draft class too. With drafting there are no certainties.

What we need are mids, mids and more mids. I'd start with a superstar inside mid, followed by an outside mid, followed by another inside mid. All of them need to be able to kick the ball properly - I don't want us drafting another Brad Symes.

1st round: best available midfielder
2nd round: best available midfielder
3rd round: best available midfielder
4th round: best available player

Definately need to look for midfielders in this years draft. Players that come to mind who I would be looking at would be Caddy, Polec, Smith, Parker, Atley or Green.

If i had my choice I would definatley choose Caddy but i think he will be gone be time we get our pick. Caddys a ball magnet with very good skills who can go forward and kick goals but more importantly brilliant at clearances.

Being realistic, I think Caddy would be a fantastic pick up for us, but given our recent form we may not be able to get him.

If we can't get Caddy, I hope we go for either Parker, Atley or Smith.

What we need is midifelders which pace, poise and class. The names I mentioned above all have this, as does Harper who has some real x-factor about him.

I also think another blue chip midifelder would be a great addition and a bloke like Hallahan who captained Vic Country would be a good get.

The 5-15 group should be really strong so we'll likely still get a really good player even with the Gold Coast screwing everyone over.

Definitely josh caddy if he is available, if not, then either dion prestia or luke parker.
Metro lifted significantly when caddy was included after their initial loss against VC

Other good vics who we might be able to pick up with our later picks include cameron guthrie, dylan conway and hallahan

Rendell has already stated
1: Best Avail
2: Best Avail to fill a need

I am fairly certain that if Gorringe is available Rendell would be all over it. Yes Vader too many rucks, but I hear Gorringe has really good versatility for a ruck.
(Where would I be without TAC Future Stars)

We need a quality outside mid. And in planning for the future we need some more KPD, smack etc we have drafted will turn out to be KPF's leaving our backline bleeding in 4 years time. Bock and Bassett will both be over 30 then. thats praying Bock does not go GC.

In my opinion, a new midfield from the draft isn't going to win us a flag in the short term future. I think we're due for an influx of ready made players. mature age players from the SANFL or current AFL players are whats needed to bolster our list. With the Veterans gone, we need skills and poise in the midfield, Thompson like players who can come in and do the job straight off the bat.

I know thats easier said than done, but the year we got Burns, Carey and Torney is what we need at the moment. We have youth, we have a forward line to get us through the next 8 years, our defencive 6 will be formidible again next year with ottens coming back. But neither will operate without a quality midfield.

Surely our Salary will be freed up quite a bit with the outgoings of superstars, I think its time to throw money at 1 or 2 potential superstars already within the AFL. With a quality backline, a quality forward line and up and coming guns like Mackay and Dangerfield, who wouldn't want to come and play for Adelaide if they had moneybags thrown at them, I think we have a rare opportunity to do this...................the question is who do you go for?????

Any thoughts?

Well apparently we're hunting come trade week. Maybe that's our chance?

KPD's aren't so bad. Talia, Davis, L.Thompson, W.Young have all played well in the SANFL in defense and obiously Davis in the AFL has impressed. Also had Sellar and McKernan capable of those roles as well.

i reckon

mid
mid/small forward
ruck
mature aged mid
best available

I don't think we need a ruck. Maybe a late rookie pick but we need quality mids above all else.
im only going on the assumption that not all our rucks will be retained. moran could go, griff could possibly still go while his stocks are on the rise, SMACK if he wants to return to VIC etc

Well we'll have to wait until then to make that decision. At the moment they all probably deserve to stay on the list. Moran needs another crack, Smack hasn't had a chance to show his worth and if wants to stay he is a handy back up. Griffin is still speculative but has been very good over the past few games.

Obviously if we lose a ruck we would have to look at drafting but as it stands we need mids and a natural small forward.

Surely Ryan Griffen realises he needs Craigy's defensive mindset training after his efforts last Firday night....

In all seriousness - interesting thoughts. I wouldn't be opposed to us chasing a quality, proven mid from the competition in this trade week. Will depend on what we have to give up and we can't put our future too much at risk. We do have this dearth of talls I've been hinting would be good trade bait.... Bock and Mcernan/Sellar/Talia for...?

I dont want Crows to use a top draft pick on a ruckman but in reality we have only 1 true ruckman size in Griffin and maybe we can pick up another in cheap trade.
I can see no reason to hold Moran as so many in squad in same size with more upside and far less injury problems.
Absoloutely no way Talia will be traded as this kid is rated by all .
McKernan is a possbility but will get his chance this week for Crows you would think, but not really rolling up sleeves so maybe looking to go home .

I reckon McKernen will end up being better than Talia. But I'd retain both at this stage.

If only Harley Bennell would fall off the radar

Considering Bennell will not be available at our pick I would probably lean towards Andrew Gaff if available.

Andrew Gaff - 16 June 1992, 183cm-78kg, Oakleigh Chargers/Carey Grammar.
He just played his second Under-18 carnival and is sure to come under consideration from GC17. His best asset is probably his work effort Article on Gaff in the Herald Sun

No, Moran is a genuine ruckman size too at 200cm, only 1cm shorter than Griffin and has plenty of upside assuming he hasn't lost too much of his athleticism thanks to his injury woes. For a bloke 200cm tall, Moran moves as well as any midfielder and is the only ruckman on our list capable of truely accumulating the footy Dean Cox style, is a competant ruckman and has shown some real ability to go forward and kick goals.

I'd give him another year, he had a complication with a fairly radical surgery in a risky attempt to get back before finals last year. It failed and so his year this year has been a write-off. I think we need to see how he goes once he's over his current injury. As much as I don't feel we need to urgently go and actively seek a ruckman in the draft/trade periods, I don't think we can afford to lose any just yet. Anyone we pick up in the draft is likely to be 3-5 years off being AFL level and A-grade ruckman don't come cheap via Trade.
