2010 AO Final - Federer VS Murray

I sort of want murray to win feeling like he deserves it, but everything points towards federer for me, his best game is always bought come grand slam time, when he loses it's by freak efforts, i'm not sure if murray can hold these freak efforts, if he does it'd have to be for 5 sets as well imo.

Fed in 4.

If Federer is on his A game he wins. If he is on his B game and Murray on his A game it is a toss up.

Murray needs the first break. if he gets it he might build. if Fed wins the first set I fear for Murray.

If Murray gives Federer the start he gave Cilic by playing defensively, then it's game over pretty much immediately. If he explodes out of the blocks like he did against Nadal though, he's a very good chance.

The thing that's worried me about Murray's recent matches is the low break point conversion rate (both for himself and his opponent). One of Federer's biggest strengths is winning the points that count, he won't give Murray so many chances (on either man's serve).

I really think Murray needs to take the first set and win it in 3 or 4 though. You get the feeling that if Federer gets a set in front, or it goes all the way, then the master will bring it home.

1st paragraph - If I'm not mistaken, Murray went down 5-2/3 against Nadal who was on absolute fire until that point. Or do you mean explode out of the blocks as in to win the first set like you mentioned in the last paragraph?

2nd paragraph - I agree completely, although look at the 2009 USO. I still have no explanation as to how del potro managed to win that. Del Potro played well, and it's not like Federer played badly.

I more mean style of play. He came out really aggressively against Nadal from the start. Contrast that against Cilic where he sort of seemed content to counter-punch until he realised he was in trouble, then kicked it up a gear.

My thoughts almost to the letter.

Murray has to take the first set, or at least one of the first 2 sets.

No one beats Fed from 2 sets down (Hewitt last one in Davis Cup I think) so Murray needs to be competitive in the first set, and either win it or take the 2nd.

The only way I can see Murray winning is in 5 sets, as Fed could win in 3,4 or 5 depending on what's thrown at him.

I'm sticking with my original tip though, Federer in 4 sets, although I wouldn't be shocked if he won in 3.

Bit undecided on this one. Federer just plays for the slams no a days. Doesn't really give a toss about the other tournaments. All the other tournaments he plays are geared towards winning the grand slams. So head to head is pretty irrelevant IMO. To beat Federer like just have to make sure he doesn't dictate play. Hewitt tried to hit to Fed's backhand but Fed was on fire with that shot. However Federer isn't troubled by Hewitt's groundies which lacks penetration. Murray will trouble him a lot more. Attacking the backhand side is a good play IMO. When coming to the net, approach the backhand side.

Murray will have to try to get as many balls deep as possible. Once a ball lands short Federer will pounce and make the most of it. There's no second chance against him, once it's short its pretty much point over. Murray is a very good defensive player though and getting so many balls back might get into Feds head a bit. Murray has a good all court game, serve, volley's, groundstrokes. However he can't go into his shell. Sometimes in matches he sort of goes into auto-pilot, just hits balls back hoping for the opponent to self-destruct. He needs to be the 'enforcer' tonight and dicatate terms whenever possible.

I think tonight will be a classic, Federer in five for me.

Thunderstorms forecast for tonight, so I doubt they'll have the roof open.

36 degrees in Melbourne currently, but the temp at Geelong Airport has dropped to 19, so the change must be rolling in as I type (BOM radar down so cannot check to see if storms rolling in with it).

Indoors, not too hot, hardcourt... the stars seem to be aligning for Murray tonight.

If his head is screwed on straight tonight I think Murray will just edge Federer... but if he suffers from any form of stage fright then Roger will crush him.

Raining (just) right now in Geelong with thunder.

.... the f*** was that about? I understand Murray's connection to the massacre but did we really need a corny 15 minute segment on it? How about analysing the friggin match!
It would have been relevant had Murray actually ever spoken about it, but he refuses too, which while I understand, almost makes his link to the stoyr meaningless to a world audience.

After two weeks, I still don't understand the interviews by Todd Woodbridge. You can see the players don't like it and he asks stupid questions.

First point in, and some knob yells out just as Fed is about to do a second serve.........it happened again on the second point. Are these people stupid? Eject them from the stadium so they lose their $270. Morons
