awesome team bro but how can you justify putting in walsh over Milne without even watching a game of his and Milne scoring 50 goals a year?

i cant really haha im just excited about the prospect of him playing... if he becomes the player they are hoping thats the team id love to see... i love milney but i think next year one of milne, schneider and mcqualter have to miss and i just think with ross lyons game style milne could be the one

Probably a better exercise is trying to pick a 24 man squad (plus two substitutes) for the 1st Round of the NAB Cup.

B Miles Dawson Dempster
HB J Smith Gilbert Peake
C Lovett Goddard Montagna
HF McQualter Lynch Heyne
F Schneider Koschitzke Steven
Foll McEvoy Jones Armitage
Int Dal Santo Gram Clarke Ray Pattison Gwilt
Sub Stanley Eddy

And I still left Geary out. Anyone still think we have no depth?

Gram, King, McEvoy, Hayes, Lovett, Baker, Montagna, Riewoldt, Schneider, Gardiner, Clarke, Peake, Goddard, Gilbert, Armitage, Ray, Koschitzke, Dempster, Fisher, Dal Santo, Blake, McQualter, Gwilt, Steven, Jones, Eddy, Geary, J Smith Dawson & Milne are all well credentialled best-22 players.

I just named 30 players. I didn't name Lynch, Heyne, Pattison, Miles or Stanley.

I forgot it was an extended bench in NAB cups.
Would defenitely give Smith a run if he is fit.
In my example I thought to start BJ on the bench, because he has the ability to come into just about any position, if some of the younguns get out of their depth.

i really want to see the guys outside of our best 22 get a good run on the park for NAB.

side i would field for NAB is as follows:

B Gwilt, Dawson, Gaertner
HB Clarke, Cahil, Simpkin
C Ray, Stevens, Peake
HF McQualter, Walsh, Geary
F Miles, Lynch, Schneider

R McEvoy, Armitage, Demptser

I/C Stanley, A Smith, Eddy, Heyne

Might want to chuck Jones, Blake, Hayes, Gardiner, Roo in the mix for mentoring for one game. But we defintely need to blood some of the guys during NAB

I'm not sure I like Gwilt as a defender. Things might have changed in the last year, but he has played there before and it doesn't shine him in the best light.
I think it is best to try to keep a good mix of youth and experience in the NAB, so that the "real " team gets some sort of practise, and so the young guys aren't completely out of their depth.
As I said before, I like the idea of BJ in a young team, because he can lend support in a lot of different roles.

For the pre-season comp, I'd want to see something like

FB: Gaertner Dawson Simpkin
HB: R. Clarke Johnson Miles
C: Ray Steven Peake
HF: McQualter Walsh Geary
FF: Schneider Lynch Gwilt

R: McEvoy Armitage Goddard (C)

Inter: Pattison A. Smith Winmar Stanley Cahill Eddy Heyne

For the NAB I would play all the young players on the Senior list who have yet to make their debute for the Saints, which would be Stanley, Heyne, Cahill, A.Smith, Winmar, and Johnson, a run, before any of the rookies. Plus I would Play Steven and Walsh, (we all want to see him). Then our new players, Lovett, Peake, and Paterson. Thats nearly half the team.

Ooh, Goodie, I love Beeg as captain.

Really want to see Heyne and Lynch on the ground together as much as possible, to see how they go as a combination. I also want to utilise our new older players, like Lovett and Peake, as much as we can, to add maturity as we test them out. It'd be great if Armitage has at least one game where he has to be midfield general, just to see how he goes in that role.

But having said all that, I'm of the opinion that the pre-season cup matters. It's the last one to ever occur in this current format, and would be a great one to win. Also, I think the finals of the NAB just start to give a bit of real-football experience for kids.

NAB CUP Team

Baker - Dawson - Johnson
Peake - Gilbert - Clarke
Ray - Steven - McQualter
Gwilt - Walsh - Lynch
Heyne - Koschitske - Milne

McEvoy - Armitage - Goddard

Pattison - Geary - A.Smith - Dempster - Eddy - Schneider

Winmar, Stanley, Gaertner, Simpkin etc would be rotated through over the four weeks but this would be my first week team.

An even mix of youth and experience. McQualter pushing into the midfield and Lynch playing as a third tall which will be his role when he debuts in the seniors. I wanna see if Gilbert has what it takes to hold down a key post and I think that Raph is a better player the more games he gets in a row.

I'm really excited about this group. It really feels like we don't need our best 22 out there every week because we don't have a best 22 anymore. It's more like a best 25 with about half a dozen others that can come in and fill a role.

Go Sainters!!!

I think it would be good to try to see how we could play without them. Injuries do happen. NAB is a good chance to try out alternatives.

I agree, especially with Riewoldt's knee, I think we should keep his season as short as possible. He will be a good player with or without a warmup series. Same with Lenny.
I think a NAB cup team needs to be a good mix of senior and junior players though. There are enough games available to give all the younger players a go.

He was in the pictures that Kildonan posted so nothing to worry about on that front.

Relaxing by the pool at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on the Gold Coast you say?

Not a bad introduction to life as an AFL player for Hutchings and Archer. I'm sure Tommy Walsh would have been hating it as well.

If Lovett doesn't play, replace him with Armitage in the starting 18 and Jack Steven comes off the bench.
