Compensation picks for GC poached players are not active this year.

I do like the look of Watson but there seems to be discrepancy in his draft range. He has a big body and is a booming left foot kick which funnily enough is something we require.

The interesting thing about this list is just how many of these picks Gold Coast will actually take. Trade week is going to be huge this year with players and picks flying around and plenty of 3 way deals.

My guess is that GC will take less than half the picks allocated to them and the rest will be traded for existing players. They dont need more kids they need AFL ready players.

So can we take Blake Bray this year, or are GWS going to bend us over.

Who are people liking as mature age defenders? How's James Thomson doing at Claremont?

Are there any smokies or projects on that list who we should look for as a late pick?

"Outstanding work rate and competitive edge" might be recruiting code for being slow/one paced and an average talent.

Gordon sounds like a beast.

Probably not tall enough to play ruck in AFL but back in the junior football days he used to play in the ruck as well (Gordon this is) which is always a handy thing in terms of versatility.

I really like the sound of Matthew Watson, big bodied and 195 tall, a beast at 18 years of age.

I saw Angus Litherland in the Claremont v East Fremantle colts semi final. He really is a player, practically held the Claremont defence up in the last half and is so quick and agile for his size, will definitely get drafted
At 192 and 85 , do you see him more as a running backline player or lockdown type.
Could probably do either, at Colts level he is playing more lockdown due to his ability to spoil, but he is quick and could be used as a running back. I see him a player that could play on a 3rd tall and kill them on the rebound. I don't see him playing on a big forward. I would put him in a Harry Taylor mould, except quicker. Takes majority of the Claremont kickouts so they obviously trust his kicking.
Been one of my favourite's for a while.

Running backline player, similar to Mackie just quicker and a better kick.

WA boy...

How do we get a club to take Thornton and get us another look at Litherland?

Heppell shaping as high draft pick
Heppell appears likely to enter the equation. He was named a joint winner of the Morrish Medal for the TAC Cup's best and fairest with Sandringham Dragon Jackson Sketcher last week, just hours after starring with 36 disposals in last week's elimination final.

Allison said a fair bit of attention would be paid to Heppell in the lead-up to next week's grand final. "He's got balance, he's got poise, he's got very good decision-making skills on both sides of his body. He's in and under and then next thing you know he's on the outside giving a handball receive," Allison said.
Heppell shaping as high draft pick

Name: Dyson Heppell
Height: 187cm
Weight: 79kg
DOB: 14th May 1992
Position: Midfielder/ Defender
Club: Gipplsand Power

dysonheppell.jpg

Heppell played three matches for Vic Country in the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, producing 18 disposals, 2 goals and five score assists in his first match against South Australia. He made his debut for Gippsland after that as a 16 year old in the TAC Cup in Round 11 and played in the Preliminary final loss to Dandenong. In 2009 he played 19 games for the Power predominately as a defender, but moved into the midfield at the end of the season to average 24 disposals, four inside 50’s and five rebound 50’s in his last four matches. AFL Prospectus

Left-footed half-back who lopes along before delivering long to the chest of a teammate. Sort of like Grant Birchall with a bouncy gait. Showed in the first game of the championships, against Vic Metro, that he has the wherewithal to recover from setbacks. The question is whether he can break out of a lope and achieve a gallop. Paul Daffey

Skilful left-footed medium defender with penetrating kick, strength overhead and clean hands. Was outstanding for Vic Country in the under-18 championships, winning MVP and All-Australian honours. Averaged 20 disposals at 75 per cent efficiency and four tackles. Kevin Sheehan

He is probably the best rebounding defender in the competition and his importance to Gippsland is unmatched by any other. His kicking is pin point and his effective kicking sets Gippsland up for numerous forward movements. He is strong in the air and clean on the ground, and teams will be keen to curb Heppell’s influence before he tears the game to pieces. He has the licence, as a designated kicker, to find the right options and more often than not his decision making is spot on. TAC Cup Website

We'll probably be all over Heppell if he makes it through to our pick. ;) :(

Heppell fits our draft profile.

I'd look for another tall to develop like Hampson who was pick 17 and selected to fill a need. Unless someone slides, pick 18 is a low enough pick to draft for need. Using pick 12 on the best available was justified after we secured Kane Lucas. If a Cook, Watson (unlikely), McCarthy (unlikely) or Lynch is there at 18, I hope we take the chance to get a KPP into the system now. I don't know why, but for some reason, these four sound more appealing and a better fit for Carlton than Talia. It reads like there are other tall rebounding backs such as Litherland available in the second round. The truth might be somewhere in between BF labelling them all stars and the fact they have a small chance of making it.

Can we get a guy with a tough first name like Andy McKay, Peter Dean, Brett Ratten, Joel Selwood and Fraser Brown?

Dyson.

Typically I support best available style recruiting early on, then a shift to fulfilling needs. However given that there are some highly rated talls in this years draft (Watson, Cook, Day, McCarthy, Gorringe etc) I would expect us to make a selection with consideration to both needs and talent.

Despite general concensus, I think that we still need midfield depth, given that Judd, Scotland, Simpson, Carazzo have or soon will reach their heights of output. While we have flankers very capable of developing into midfield roles (I can't wait for Yarran), I would not disregard drafting a midfielder at pick 18 IF the best of the young talls are taken. We should not reach for a Tape/Fitzgerald/Barden type if their is a high probablility they will still be around in the 30's.

Would love Watson or Cook, but I also have a soft side for Hallahan, Jacobs and Andreoli (who I hope will slide into the 30's if we take Watson or Cook)
