NORTH Melbourne appears poised to use the compensation pick it acquired in the trade that sent big man David Hale to Hawthorn.

That compensation pick is likely to be in the late 20s, giving the Roos - whose first selection comes at No.17 - two picks inside the top 30.

I support the Carlton Football Club and started barracking for them as I have always admired their legends of the past.

Horlin - Smith hasn't played a lot of footy: he has played for SA district cricket seniors since he was 15 and is still a sought after quantity by the Redbacks. As such, he could have a very nice upside.

I'm probably get kicked off for suggesting this but I think we should look at rookie listing paul johnson from melb as back up with kreuzer coming back from a knee and warnock being injury prone. I would hate to see hampson as our only ruckman. I know that johnson won't be a champion ruckman but he will be competitive if everything goes pear shaped

TG, not sure if Horlin-Smith will last till 41, he seems to be a good smokie to be drafted a little higher than most people expect.

I'm not expecting any bargains in the national draft at 33 and 41 after compensation picks bump us down the order.

Even Watson might be a case of overpaying to address a need.

I want a defender to smash his opponent before being a offensive weapon like Christou. Christou had blistering pace which he used to break the lines and deliver it lace out with a 70 metre pass. I can see us getting more out of Mitchell if he's a goal kicking power forward who can crash a pack. Henderson and Waite aren't stay at home power forwards.

If it works out like foj1's Phantom, then Melbourne, WC, Port and Brisbane could be laughing if they've walked away with Atley (Melb), Sinclair (Melb), Lycett (WC), Cook (WC), Caddy (Port), Jacobs (Lions) and Cripps (Port).

Wilson is probably another Birchall or Stratton for the Hawks.

They need an Isaac Smith or another Clinton Young more than they need another third tall/sweeper with a left foot.

I expect us to land a player or two in the rookie draft.

Not needed with the new "Sub" rule. If we run into a problem Setanta can fill in. Rookie list a young one. Ruck is the one spot you can get away with a bit if you're not strong. Great if you have a depth there as we do but other areas are more important. Lack a midfield (including flankers), KP defence, KP forwards in that order you don't win a flag. Lack a top ruck, as the Hawks did in 2008, and you're still a good chance. Don't have one at all though, as Essendon did in that final against Adelaide, then you might be in lots of trouble.

Jeez I hate this time of the year because my mind does backflips on itself.

Right I have been patrolling the D+T Board and having gone through Snoop's, Foj1's, maxrm's, Knightmare's and the trial run of the phantom I have come to the conclusion that we do not have to take Watson at 18 if available, particularly if a better player slides (Pitt, Lamb, Smedts, Guthrie, Smith, Caddy, yes I am dreaming).

Names like Chalwell, Hartigan, Delaney, Litherland, Mitchell, Kazernis, O'Shea, Tape, Walker are all taller players who are likely to be available at later selections. I am going to say no to reaching for a tall.

O'Shea is just 191 cms tall.

Inside Footy said O'Shea played midfield to win 32 touches and contested possessions with hard running.

The player said his kicking needs to improve.

I don't see O'Shea as a type we really need.

Do you mean .05? Over 20m .5 (around 4m by the 20m mark) is probably bigger than the difference between McLean and Yarran and is defintely a huge factor for recruiters to consider.

Only Roos likely to use draft compensation pick

NORTH Melbourne looms as the only club likely to use an end-of-first round compensation pick in next month's NAB AFL Draft.

Gold Coast, Geelong, the Brisbane Lions and Richmond are other clubs who could potentially use an extra selection at the end of the first round.

The deadline for clubs wishing to use a compensation pick is Friday, by which time those clubs must notify the AFL of their intention to do so at next month's national draft.

Cricketer George Horlin-Smith a bolter in AFL draft

"He has never done a proper football pre-season in his life,," South Australian under-18 football coach Brenton Phillips said. "So you can imagine the development in him."

"He's a pretty complete footballer," Sturt under-18 coach Chris Brown said.

"He was a small kid but he's really shot up and I always thought he would play cricket but he said: 'I am pretty keen on playing footy'. He's a huge talent, an unbelievable talent."

Just to set the record straight on George HS.

Brisbane were the first to get onto George back in March this year.
They were the 1st and only AFL club there on 1 May 2010 Pembroke v Sacred Heart at Sacred Heart College.
They were also there 15 May 2010 when Pembroke played Scotch College at Scotch College - no other AFL clubs attended that game either.
Brisbane convinced him and Sturt to play U18s for Sturt in school holiday break.
Played in the Sturt U18 game played after the SA v Vic Metro Carnival match at Norwood Oval on 12 June 2010 when all the recruiters just happened to be sitting there.
He starred and ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE.
Collingwood (allegedly - I have to be careful here) flew him over to Melbs a few weeks later and tried to claim him as their discovery and encouraged/told him (again allegedly) to take it easy for the rest of the season.
That is what ACTUALLY happened - not fairytales as above.

That makes me s****** louder than the occasions where Fremantle's scouts are labelled geniuses for drafting Barlow after Morabito, Fyfe, Houghton, Roberton, Bollenhagen, Crichton and McPhee. I think Fremantle even wanted to draft Hardingham before Barlow, but Essendon got in first after they drafted McPhee in the PSD.

If only we had their foresight to get Barlow instead of Mclean.

Geelong Falcon leads most agile draft prospects

AFL RECRUITERS and talent scouts are still scratching their heads at the performance of Geelong Falcons forward Luke Dahlhaus in the agility test at the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

The 18-year-old dodged and weaved his way around the course in 7.47 seconds, smashing the previous record.

The second-best effort in the agility test came from mature-age hopeful Daniel Nicholson, who recorded a time of 7.69sec.

Nicholson is aiming to follow the path of Demons star Cameron Bruce by getting drafted straight out of Melbourne's amateur competition.

Weighing only 76kg, the 23-year-old is a real dasher who loves to carry the ball and break the lines.

The other impressive times in the agility test were recorded by Northern Bullants small forward Ahmed Saad (7.89), Geelong Falcons defender Billie Smedts (7.90) and Michael Hutchinson from Queensland (7.95).
