Here's an assessment about the state of our list... Do we have enough selections? Don't get angry if one of your favourites is mentioned, just calling it as I see it...

Should our list remain the same for the ND, I think 2 selections (+2 trades) (+2 rookie upgrades) is too few players to turn over.

It's a 'shallow draft'. So I'll let the recruiters, including our own resident sage SpinachLinguini make the call on whether we should take a punt on picks 59, 75 and pick 10 in addition to our 4 rookie selections.

Is it worth punting on some unknown 18 yr old kid (of which there are lots in phantom drafts this time of year) and hope for every hack we unearth a gem like Garlett? We certainly still have a few cloggers on our list. These are my nominations for delistment at the end of 2010.

  • Anderson - very skeptical he'll ever make the grade. Got towelled up by Russell Robertson in his last appearance.
  • Fisher - Can't run, Can't kick. Was under an injury cloud over the summer but does he still have it?
  • Cloke - Behind o'hAilpin, Henderson and 4 ruckmen for a position in the side.
  • Scotland - accumulates the stats but in tandem with Thornton plays slow-moving ring-a-rosy footy that doesn't encourage swift run and carry movement. Does he still have the passion of his younger self?
  • Johnson - Experiment failed - he doesn't have the intensity to play in defense and his silky skills mysteriously disappear when under pressure. His only hope is to re-invent himself as a forward pocket.
  • Houlihan - Dropped to the Bullants for a few games and I prefer the intensity of Garlett and Robinson going forward. Can't see him being a vital member of premiership aspirations.
  • Wiggins - Can he recapture the form of late 2008? Struggled to have an impact out of position in the backline.

Do we gain anything by bringing forward things a year? Some of these guys are contracted for 2010, I realise but for the others, it may be worth redrafting them with pick 75 if Wayne Hughes' infamous list of 40 players are all taken by that stage. Would Port Power really pounce on Cloke???

Righto Guys,

After the Second List Lodgement, there have been a further amendment to our playing group announced and it now looks like this:

7.
8. Matthew Kreuzer

13. Chris Yarran
14. Bradley Fisher
15. Steven Browne
16. Shaun Grigg
17. Setanta OhAilpin
18. Paul Bower
19. Eddie Betts

32. Bret Thornton
33. Ryan Houlihan

46. David Ellard
??. Zach Tuohy - International (Ireland)

Scholarship List: ?? Peter Labi (PNG).

Primary Listed: 35.
Rookies: 3.
Scholar: 1.
Total: 39.

It is almost certain that we will end up with a Primary List of 38 Players, 8 Rookies (of which two will be Nominated Rookies, because we don’t have any Veterans) & 1 Scholarship Player [47 All up].

At the moment we have National Draft Picks: 12, 43 & 59 We are expected to use those 3 and dependant on further de-listings may have additional picks in either the National Draft or the PSD.

We have PSD Picks: 10, 26 etc. We might use 1.

We will have at least 3 Rookie Picks: We will probably take 4 or 5 depending on possible downgrades and further removals.

Summary: I reckon there could be at least another Primary List player chopped before the Lists are finalised. We are now short of 3 players on the Primary List and 5 on the Rookie List. On that basis, there just might be more culling to come before the Final List Lodgement. Who knows there might be some re-rookieing to be done yet or the rumoured downgrading of a Primary Listed player to the Rookie List.

Either way, we will be welcoming 8 new Blue Boyz to Princes Park very soon.

I will keep upgrading this thread as changes occur providing the situation as it stands and further options. I trust the above info makes sense to you all. ;)

We have PSD Picks: 10, 26 etc. We might use 1, but to participate there has to be delisting/s.

We will have 5 Rookie Picks: We will probably take 3 or 4 new ones in the Rookie Draft, depending on possible downgrades and further removals. Interesting variable this year with the option of Mature Age Rookies.

Summary: I reckon there could be at least another Primary List player chopped before the Lists are finalised. We now have the maximum number of players on the Primary List, but are short by 5 on the Rookie List. On that basis, there just might be more culling to come before the Final List Lodgement. Who knows there might be some re-rookieing to be done yet or the rumoured downgrading of a Primary Listed player to the Rookie List (remember the Mature Age Scenario).

Bentley isn't on the Rookie list, yet I don't see him as delisted rookie. Am I missing something.

I have also noticed that on a few websites' lists. I'm wondering if they don't actually know so they don't bother addressing it? Either way, I assume that he has gone else the AFL would have looked into it.

Nah, Bentley's name was added to the original news release, so most of the delistings were done and then they just adjusted the original, rather than announce it separately.

Anyone who just paid attention to the main press release might have missed it.

He's definitely delisted by the Club and is no longer a rookie

Yeah, my bad. He was actually delisted a couple of days after the others because he was away and the club wanted to tell him face to face. I just missed upgrading the list at the time and have done cut and pastes since. I will fix it next time I upgrade this thread. Good find. :o

With all the hysteria surrounding our list changes since the end of the season, I thought that I would try and put it into perspective a little bit. There was the trading of Fev, the retirement of Stevo, the delisting of a bunch of guys who weren’t going to be there when we are challenging, the retention of 2 Rookies, the upgrading of 2 Rookies and 7 new Blues already with 4 still to come in the December Drafts.

In this exercise, I have attempted to compare those players on our list who have departed to the arrivals. Keep in mind they are not exactly like for like, but it should give you some idea as to whether we are better off or worse off. I have shown players in reverse order from the final place on our list through to the more established.

2009 List: ................ 2010 List:

Aside from Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde and an injured Stevo, surely it is obvious that our list is really shaping up and who knows what Santa will bring us in December. You be the judge!

I trust the above info makes sense to you all. Other than the jumper number allocations, there is no much to add to this thread, so see you all next year – Same time, same station!

Guys,

Just to finalize my part of this thread before the end of year, I thought that I would do another list to show how it has actually changed from the end of the 2009 Season. The first part is the remaining players from 2009 (Not with Jumper numbers and split up into Primary and Rookie etc.). The second part is the departed and their replacements. I’m sure most of you will agree that aside from a couple of losses, we have picked up some beauties to replace the goneskis!

I just think he's been very harshly done by on here.

Sure, he's not a world beater by any stretch of the imagination but he is a solid footballer.

People judge him far too harshly on the few mistakes he made (eg. a fumble against Hawthorn) and tend to not raise mention of the solid things he did in the games he played - eg. put his body on the line, get in the right positions etc.

As I said, he's never going to be a great footballer but there's no reason why he can't be a contributor. He showed he has the ability to play senior football so I'd be disappointed to cut him after 1 season. Besides, as a rookie, I'm not sure what else he could have done. He was given the chance to play senior football as a rookie listed player and he was OK. He was a regular goalkicker in the VFL seniors kicking an average of a goal per game. He was named in the best in the VFL 3 times.

When he was dropped down to the VFL reserves for one game he was named 2nd BOG.

Supporters are easily made an impression upon by what a player does early in their career and it's almost impossible for a player to change that perception. Bentley became a whipping boy amongs Carlton supporters due to being nervous in his debut against Hawthorn and people from there on held a view that Bentley is shit. Which he isn't.

I know that this post is about 2 months late, but i can't agree with you J. In no ways is Bentley shit. He is a hard worker who plays a team role and does the 1%'ers for the team, which is a quality aspect of his game, and he would probably have been a solid participater in our team in the past. But these days, now that we have our strongest team since 2001, and our strongest midfield than probably 95, I don't think Carlton can afford players who just play the team role. His skills purely aren't good enough to play for the CFC. So i would've been all for delisting his or trading him to a team where he could be utilized, but i think in his position it is unfortunent that he has been kept on the list, as i'm not sure how much of an opportunity he has to break the side anymore. But saying that, best of luck to him. Hopefully he can prove me wrong!

How it's done apparently.

Geelong empire built at super drafts

Joel Selwood, Joel Corey, Gary Ablett Jr and Jimmy Bartel with the 2009 premiership cup.

IT IS the powerhouse that Stephen Wells built.

Frank Costa and Mark Thompson may be the toast of Geelong, but it is the shrewd recruiting chief who really deserves the keys to the city.
It was Wells' ingenious selections in the 1999 and 2001 national drafts that laid the foundations for the Cats' 2007 and 2009 premierships.
The 2010 AFL Prospectus - the ultimate number-cruncher for football's stat fanatics compiled by Champion Data - has laid bare the phenomenal strike rate of the Skilled Stadium talent scout.
Wells nailed two drafts in three years. Of his 15 picks, eight have developed into elite players. That is a staggering return.
