Tape seems to be heading northwards with a bullet - looks like the rumour mill is now well and truly in full swing.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

OMG Meto...I agree with you!!!!!!!

I like Issac Smith actually......but then again I was falling over myself for Callum Bartlett last year

To be fair, Callum Bartlett will be a gun, it's just his knees (did another one at Brisbane this year) that keep holding him back.

PO - Has Daffey done a full phantom already or is the McCarthy thing just web chat?

Just did top 25 picks.

Anyone got a link to this?

Emma Quayle via Twitter thinks we are looking at Smedts, I Smith or Tape with our first pick.

Gee, state the obvious why don't you Emma :D

While I like Smith, if as it seems, we lose Watson to Carlton I won't be so happy, even though obviously we'll take another defender later in the draft. If this is the way we go it's interesting because it would indicate that Wells feels more run and carry is more of a priority need in our list rebuild (at this stage anyway) than a gun KPD, and by extension he must have a fair bit of faith in Gillies and Drum.

I want Watson, but I'll back Wells whatever he does.

Yeah...seems like he interviewed well and that's really helped him too.

I reckon Sydney at 21 seems the logical destination since Bolton is almost done.

I do rate him, although his height to be a full back worries me, but then again he might turn into a good Enright replacement type. That said, I'd rather we didn't reach at 15 given what will likely be available at 15.

h I am more confident than ever seeing this story that we WON'T take I.Smitnow.

Why so?

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

I have a theory that GFC "leak" a name to the media that they run with which may be a player we have 2nd or 3rd in line but is not our preferred pick. I am probably way off here but it seems in drafts of the last 4 to 5 years we have been linked to a player each year at this time who we never end up taking even though he has been available for our selection. If Smith gets taken then my theory is blown out of the water.

I think of those three, I'd prefer Tape the most. I'm really starting to warm to this kid. If he was 2-3cm taller, he'd be a certain Top ten pick.

Also interesting to see Emma link pick 23 to Lucas Cook. She didn't sound completely convincing though.

I agree about the general strategy, ie. i am sure we have done this in previous years, but I don't thinking we're doing it here with Smith.

For starters, we have a higher pick than most clubs, so there's no need for the strategy. It makes more sense for the strategy to be used by a club with a lower pick, such as Carlton, to represent that they want player X, so we'll take him (Smith), ensuring player Y (Watson or whoever) falls through to them. Because we pick earlier we don't need to do that, we can likely tab the player we want.

But most significantly, because he's 21, I can't see GC taking Smith, and I doubt anyone else will take him before 15. So if it's a diversion tactic it's not going to achieve anything. I tend to think either we really are taking Smith, or as jester says, it's just poor assumptions by the so called experts. Either way I don't think it's a diversion.

No. It sounded more like a name on the run to me too. I can't quite see the appeal of Cook to be honest. I reckon if you are going to get a top shelf KPF you need to be using a high draft pick unless you are very very lucky. I think we have higher priorities from a needs basis as well.

Agree on all counts, both need and otherwise.

Let's hope we don't take such a KPF (I don't believe we will, as with only 4 picks, we have limited picks to address our real needs).

I am confident that we won't. With only the 4 picks a mix of 3 small/med types and 1 KPD sounds about right. If someone fell to a pick that was too good to be true (perhaps like Vardy last year) then I suppose that would be the exception.

Had another thought. Maybe we would recruit Cook as a KPD? Good height, good mobility. Often the best KPD's start out as KPF's in their junior careers.

Food for thought.

YOTC , just remember the story about the boy and the wolf. You maybe right but that doesn't mean we won't pick iSmith

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

Yer heard about Sodomaco is a gun at TAC level but like Anton Woods last year doesn't get you neccessarily into State teams or drafted.
Kinda like Jed Lamb has that freakish ability like Steve Johnson wouldn't mind seeing those two tearing it up.

Yeah 3 and 1 or 2 and 2 (we may need to draft 2 KPD if we can't get one early of high calibre).

I wish we could get ISmith and/or Watson/McCarthy/Tape...it sucks that we're going to have to choose one or the other.

I like Smith, but if we can't find a quality key defender later on that really does worry me.

Also don't want the bluebaggers getting a quality player like Watson...he will really help them.

HS Geelong draft countdown:
http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/draft-countdown-geelong/story-e6frf9jf-1225952685145

Gets a few things wrong (I laugh at how it says Mooney might have two years left in him...yeah one would be lucky) but worth discussing.

Obviously Smith is the big one for 15. Must be between him, Watson/McCarthy/Tape for that pick.

I disagree with the need for a KPF...well I'd like one...if we had 6 picks...but we only have 4. More critical issues to address.

We could just get Watson and cover both bases since he can play either end.

I hope we don't take Jacobs. He won't be there anyway, and as good a player as he is, he's not quick, and that's the last thing we need for our defence. If we wait until 37 for a defender it makes much more sense to pick up the best midfielder at 23-guys like Parker, Hallahan, Cripps, Prestia, Green etc will all be around that mark.

Tape won't get to 37 (he'll be lucky to get to 23) so if we go a defender at 37 it'll be interesting to see who it would be....maybe Delaney or Chalwell?

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

Anyone else have interest in Reece Conca from WA. From what I've read he's a quickish midfielder / flanker type that has racked up a few impressive performances at senior level. Will probably be available for our second round pick so he'd be with the likes of Smith, Harper, Prestia etc.

The WA boys that have played some snr footy (Rich, Duncan, L Jetta, Hill etc) in the past have been able to step straight in and make an impact. May be a possibility.

A lot depends on our first pick. Do we go tall with Watson / McCarthy / Darling do we go mids/flankers such as Caddy / Smedts / Smith / Harper. Wells has discussed leg speed, run and carry, Scott has a liking for tallish utilities that can play anywhere so that really doesn't give us too much of an insire into who we're likely to go after.

The Sun is reporting that Fox will do the whole 1st round backwards rather that last years top 10 so we'll find out our second selection before our first. A bit weird really.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

I like the sound of this kid. Not sure if he is an exact fit to our needs but just got a feeling about him. I doubt a cold arfo at KP would worry him too much after Canada

Me to, I read a similar article and he appeared to me to be pretty special, at least between the ears.

Obviously has ability to go with it, but how much? lets hope Wells knows!

He sounds like a goody.

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

Conca will go pick 20 I reckon.

I still want a tall, preferably Watson, at 15, and then try and run the guantlet with Smith to 23. But we might just take Smith first.

I am staggered Sheahan doesn't have McCarthy in his top 30

Re: Potential Draftee Watch 2010 - Critical and Compromised.

I think we have a huge mid field depth and we do need a key forward who has the "phyiscal game" to make his teamates walk a few inches taller.

I hope Jack Darling survives at pick 15 to allow us to pick him up. He would be a bargain basement pick. Cameron Mooney has a year left to go whilst Tomahawk and Mitchell Brown are Work IN Progress.
