Opinion 2010 Top 50

Ball was the other one I was seriously considering (post 487). I think he probably has been better than Murphy as well but it doesn't seem right that Murphy isn't in the top 50. Maybe I've got another player too high and shouldn't be on the list. Ball in, Murphy out is ok with me. The past few years Collingwood have been good but I always seem to have about 4 players in the top 50 from the pies. It's too even with them.

Really? Ball? I would have thought that was a bit of a stretch. He's been solid but if you have him in you'd have to leave it open for a lot of other player - to use an example from my own team (note I don't think this player should be in the top 50, before anybody jumps on my back), Shane Tuck who leads Ball in every major statistical category except tackles.

I know it's tough for most BF people to understand but statistics are a guide and not the be all and end all. For instance, Collingwood are the best tackling side in the competition and he is our best tackler. Swan, Pendlebury, Didak & Thomas have all improved this year as midfielders (some moreso than others) and IMO this is largely due to the grunt work Ball has provided this year. You do not receive a stat for putting your head over the ball, shepherding, blocking etc.
Luke Ball has been one of the key reasons why Collingwood are sitting on the top of the ladder this year. I think that we need to look beyond the normal statistical categories to recognise his contribution this year.
I absolutely believe that he has had more of an impact this year than someone like Marc Murphy whose typical 'float in and out' performance has not assisted his team in achieving anything other than mid table mediocrity this season.

Uh, yes you do. A shepherd or a block is a 1%er, and Tuck leads him in that category. And there's not much point putting your head over the ball unless you get your hands to it (1st possessions), which Tuck also leads him in. Not to mention clearances, score assists, rebound fifties, inside 50s, kicks, handballs...

He's been a good ordinary player.

Yep. Reckon he's had a better season than both Murphy and probably on a par with Russell.
Where would you have them in the top 50? You're probably the best Blues poster imo plus you do the POTY stuff, so you'd have a good idea. Judd and Simpson a clear top 2 for me and then it gets hard. I probably got brainwashed reading all the negative opinions about Scotland in the Swans v Blues thread on the Carlton board.

lol Godzke, Watson has jumped up to equal 1st with Hodge. I'll probably still have him in the 20's.

Feel free to attempt a "top 50" for football this coming season. :D

<<< ---- #1 in the world baby!

In all honesty, as much as I love Watson, I don't think he has even a slight chance of making this year's AA. Not that he doesn't deserve it, just not flashy enough. Perhaps if he got a sleeve then everyone would rank him at the greatest midfielder of all time.

Should get a gig in the squad.

Not sure about the best poster stuff. Pretty hard to gauge him relative to opposition players but if you see fit to have Murphy 48, I'd probably have Scotland 40-45. Been brilliant in some games, ordinary in others and fairly consistent over the course of the season.

Best laugh I have had all week.
Actually I thought this was quite funny:

Is not even in the same stratosphere as Scully and Trengove.

2. Tom Scully
3. Jordie McKenzie
4. Jack Watts

Would you have Murphy in the top 50? What about Russell? Sorry about the questions.

lol indie.

I can't work out Murphy, he isn't taking control of games like he did last year. It can't all be down to lack of preseason.
Certainly the hip injury would have affected him but I think his output has been down on previous seasons and he would be in the "Unluckies" category IMO. But he is a gun player and could easily go straight back into my Top 50.

He did for the first time in the second half of the West Coast game. I'd say he played at least 5 games last season better than anything he's produced this season. Hasn't hit the scoreboard as often this season though 2 goals 2 on the weekend was promising.

Preseason and extra attention hasn't helped though no doubt he's been disappointing this season.

I think you have Russell about right though it's hard to say with Murphy. Without looking at the names I'd have said no but looking at the unluckies I'm not sure who replaces him. Either way, I've got no issues.
