2010 Wimbledon (Week 1)

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Surprised nobody has made a thread yet. Starts next Monday and qualifying has been under way for a couple of days. Interesting stories as always for my favourite grand slam coming into it:

Men:
- Rafa's dominace contiune onto the grass like on the clay?
- Is Fed's reign on the Wimbledon crown (bar one year) over?
- Can Roddick have another crack at the title after last year's close loss? (and his poor loss to Sela last week in Queen's)
- Can Murray and Djokovic wake the f*** up?
- Can Soderling contiune the form from his French Open runner-up performace?
- Berdych, is he a contender for the slams now?
- And my favourite, is Hewitt back in contention after beating Federer in Halle? Surely not...

Womens:
- Williams sisters domiance over the title contiune?
- How will Sam cope after the horrible RG final loss, now she is on the grass?
- Schiavone going into it as the player to win a slam, how will she go?
- Russian meltown, will it contiune?
- Jankovic, maybe she's contending for the majors again?
- Who else is going to step up? Wozinacki, Azarenka etc.?

As for the Australians we have 7 in the main draw with qualifying still happening:

Men:
Lleyton Hewitt
Peter Luczak (finally achieved his goal of playing in the main draw at all the slams)

Women:
Sam Stosur
Alicia Molik
Jarmila Groth
Casey Dellacqua (first match back after a few months off, might not go so well)
Anatasia Rodionova

Plus, a bundle won in first round of qualifying last night. Ebden, Sirianni, Tomic (7-5 in the third), Jones, Matosevic and Ball in the men's 2nd round while Golds and Dokic (she's winning matches, yay) are in the women's 2nd round. Got to say disappointing to see Sophie Ferguson lose 1st round of qualies, is getting closer to the top 100, win is a big boost. Hopefully they all don't get knocked out tonight.

TV Coverage: Channel 9 and Fox Sports, note that Channel 9 are deciding to show the ODI series with England for some stupid reason so there will be clashes on a few of the days. There will always be livestreams.

Draws come out Friday around 7pm.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Cheers for getting the thread up matt. :thumbsu:

Tough win by Tomic, just glad that he got through it. Will he be able to beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin? I see he made the 3rd round of Wimby a few years back so you'd say he'll be a pretty tough opponent for Bernard.

Just noticed that Gilles Muller is in the qualifying, what the heck's happened to him? You'd imagine with that serve he'd be a good chance to make it through qualifying. In fact, there are some pretty decent names in the field; Mahut vs Koubek is a pretty good clash for qualies. How about Donald Young, knocked out first round. Just doesn't look like he'll ever come good on his talent.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Roger-Vasselin is a decent player on grass and beat Tomic in the final round of qualies for Wimby last year, I doubt it.

Muller has had one odd career, ups and won, beat Roddick in the 1st round at the US Open then was in the wildneress for a while and he made the quarters of the US open in 2008.

Did you see Mahut winning 24-22 in the final set over Bogdanovic, funny result.

Crazy, absolutely crazy. The Brits are probably crying, one less player that can make the MD, they can't have too many others.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

They've got 3 back-to-back Wimbledon specials on Fox Sports right now, I love these things.

First one (just started) is on Borg. Second is 'record breakers', so I'm guessing Becker, Navratilova ect, third one is on Pistol Pete.

I find it crazy that Wimbledon give away their wildcards to next acceptable when they have Bogodanovic, who granted does has a terrible record in the MD of Wimbledon but is ranked 160 in the world, still doesn't waarant a WC at his home slam. Very harsh policy that won't do a whole lot i reckon.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Wimbledon is on at the perfect time of the year, with it finishing at the end of the first week of the school holidays. Hopefully Hewitt is on earlier in the day in the first week.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Dokic won a match, the sky must be falling! Should be a very interesting tournament this year especially the men's we'll probably see where Roger's at.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Lots of Aussies in action at the moment. Tomic dominating Roger-Vasselin whilst Ebden is in the third against Guez. Dokic also up a break in the first.

Amazing result in the Mahut match. Happy to see the Brits haven't wasted another WC on Boggo who I think is like 0-8 at Wimbledon.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Ebden through in three. :)

Reckon he'll get slaughtered by Dent, though.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

We've already had Golds, Sirianni & Jones knocked out. But Ebden is through to the 3rd round, great effort for him, already qualified for the AO this year, hopefully he can make it 2 slams.

EDIT: He's playing Dent? Oh dear, there goes any chance.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Tomic through 6-1 7-6 great win great score line aswell.:thumbsu: Plays either Matosevic or Amritraj with one set all. Carsten Ball serving for the match.

Re: 2010 Wimbledon

Dokic had a match point in the second set. Watch her get smashed in this set.

She did, oh dear. Well, she lost in the end, disappointing.

3 Aussie men in the final round of qualifying, best effort in a while, pity one of them probably is only a chance of qualifing (Tomic).

I would give Ball a chance against Muller both big servers if he returns well he can win.
