Very nice. :thumbsu: Wonder how long this little purple patch will last though.
its so frustrating watching sam it really is, has the game to beat anybody on any given day and should be ranked in the top 5 (probably even top 2 or 3) but she still can not seem to put consistent performances together over a lengthy period of time, the truly great players can do it, Maybe just maybe if she can win this thing she can finally become the player she should be and not a nearly but not quite player.

Sam is becoming quite rich, she's earnt 300K the last few days, from 2 matches.
Sam only needs to win a set to go through, and Dementieva is apprently really struggling with the heat, but anything could happen.

460 points so far as well, a big help headin ginto next eyar to keep that ranking in the top 10.

She's playing reallyw el so far, will take an absolute disaster for her not to qualify now for the semis. Sam has seemed to be able to turn it on for the big events. Now just got to get the job done against Elena.

Sam lost to Elena in a third set tiebreak (these two seem to play 3 setters quite a bit), probably should've won but playing 3 days in a row probably didn't help.

I think will play the loser of the Zvonareva/Clijsters match in the SF.

Yep, disappointing she didn't get the extra points and bonus money by losing to Elena but important thing is she has qualified on top and now has a day to prepare for the SF. She would obivously prefer Vera but Kim's form is still a little scratchy but then again, it was in New York as well and Sam couldn't finish that off.

Zvonareva beat Clijsters so that means Sam is stuck playing Kim in the semis. 1.30am our time tonight.

But the bigger news, Elena Dementieva has annouced her retirement after losing to Schiavone. She said that at the start of the year she thought this would be her last year and surprisingly kept it a secret for the entire year. Bit of a shock but her decision. I was one of those ones who thought her serve was not good enough for her to ahve a slam but she was one of the cleanets ballstrikers on the tour. Good luck to her whatever she does. Not sure what mother is going to do now, won't be able to tear her hair out watching her daughter play...

Dementieva had a great career. While never quite good enough to claim a grand slam, she was a constant part of the top 10 in the last few years. Her ground strokes were up there with the best of them, and a definite career highlight would be the Beijing gold medal in 2008. After watching her announce the retirement, it is clear she was a much loved player amongst the girls on the tour.

On another note, I think Stosur will end up finishing the year as the world number 5. That really is a fantastic effort and she needs to be congratulated for it.

Has to beat kim to become World's No.5, she is only 3 points behind Venus at the moment for that 5th spot, unlucky. Can jump to No.4 over Serena if she can win YEC.

Shocked that Dementieva retired, didn't see that one coming. Thought he had at least a year or two left. The end to a very good career, one that should've had a Slam in there.
Are you suggesting something with HE?

Well Sam lost to Kim quite comfortably in the end. I was out so I couldn't watch a stream or anything but from reading tennis forum she was pretty ordinary. Good to make SF though considering her form leading up to this. Unfortunately it looks like she's Clijsters' bitch though:p

Kim got off to an awful start, Sam really should of taken better advantage but ended up losing that early 3-0 lead. Didn't see much from 4-4 onwards because the streams were being a pain, but she ended up losing comfortably in the end. Sam did have a set point that first set, saved by a very nice winner from Kim. Thought she was shot to win this title but obivously not. Now to enjoy the time off.

no shame in that tbh, clijsters is clearly the number 2 player in the world behind serena, wozniacki is only number 1 because A. Serena has been injured since wimbledon and B. clijsters has been injured as well and hasnt played many matches the last few months, she may be a worthy number 1 in a couple of years time but right now she is not, Stosur clearly needs to rest to freshen up, despite her lacklustre finish to the year she has established herself as a major threat from next year onwards if she can continue the success she had this year.

This is a bit off topic but there's some sort of HIV scandal going on between Mary Pierce's ex boyfriend (well known baseball player) and Meghan Shaguenssy. The guy later became Meghan Shaugnessy's BF and apparently had sex with her when he knew he was HIV positive. Her and some other girlfriends of his are apparently suing. There is nothing though that states whether Shaugnessy has the virus or not though. Hope that made sense.
