Totally agree, Davis >>>>>>>>>>> Medhurst.

Freo have said no, Port are leaning that way and the Crows have said no.

Leon Davis as a rookie adds quality depth as a small forward and backman, he will add experience and be good for the younger guys especially the indigenous players. Reports from the Pies was he was/is a quality bloke.

As far as I'm aware we have 2 extra rookie picks this year. I'm not against getting both Medhurst and Davis. What's to loose? If we have a chance to pinch a flag in the next couple years then we may as well use the rookie list for depth. This draft is hardly screaming quality plus these are two players who can potentially improve our team from day 1.

What could we be potentially missing out on? The next Ash Arrowsmith or Liam Bedford. There's a lot more flops than success' in the rookie draft.

We don't. We've had two extra players on the rookie list the past couple of years as compensation for having to put up with all the GC/GWS concessions.

This year is the same, i.e. we'll still be allowed only 6 on the rookie list, so we'll take 4 rookie picks to add to Hamp and McGovern.

The AFL site says this

In response to the introduction of Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney, which will make its AFL debut in 2012, each club is allowed to place a maximum of nine players on its rookie list. These players can play in the pre-season competition or be promoted as a long-term injury replacement player during the home and away season.

I assume two spots get taken by Veterans (Glass and Cox I believe) and that would leave 7 spots with Hamp and McGovern holding one each. Does that mean we have 5 available?

FWIW If it's 5 i'd still use 2 on Medhurst and Davis. 4 I would be more hesistant but still be inclined to draft both.

I might stand corrected then

I thought the numbers went from 6 (including vets) to 8 (including vets) a few years ago, and that was it as far as the GC/GWS concessions.

Edit: no, I might have been right after all.

AFL Player Rules said:
21.1.3 Rookie Lists
In addition to maintaining the maximum number of allowable Players
on the Rookie Lists under 21.1.1 and 21.1.2, each Club may for AFL
seasons 2010, 2011 and 2012 include a maximum of 2 extra players
on their Rookie Lists

Im pretty sure your right fivey with the number 9 being inclusive of having a listed international rookie.

This is where I got confused,

Rookie List

Most rookie-listed players are recruited via the rookie draft, which takes place in December. But clubs also have the option to leave one rookie position ‘open’ after the rookie draft and that can be filled after the NAB Cup Grand Final and prior to the start of the premiership season. Clubs can have up to three trialling players as part of a training squad at any time during the summer as to be able to assess state league players, before making a decision on the eve of the season.

In addition, clubs have the capacity to attract elite athletes from other sports under the ‘Alternative Talent’ Rule. The player may not have been registered or played in an Australian Football competition for at least three years, and have played in a recognised elite sporting competition. Clubs may offer one spot under this rule. Player payments are outside the salary cap if he does not play senior football, with a pro-rata payment inside the cap for any senior matches. A player may remain on the ‘Alternative Talent’ list for three years, before being placed on the Primary List.

Does this mean in addition to 9 or 8 + 1?

Either way much like Suma Magic i still think we should target both.

Is there a minimum contract when you take a player as a rookie or can you offer them 1 year?

I'm just thinking out loud - with 4 picks this year (in a so called shallow draft) taking Medhurst and Davis with 2 of those picks probably makes sense. But next years draft is meant to be very deep (and potentially we have 2 less rookie spots from reading the above) - so we may want/need to clear spots on the RL for next season's RD. i.e. if Medhurst or Davis don't work out or have had enough!

Still keen for Davis. Looks like there is no other clubs interested now with Port pulling out of the race.

AA in 2011 for free as a rookie. Can't go wrong can we? Also really like the look off Talia

i cant really see the aflpa signing off on that.

The list was extended during the period of GC and GWS introduction. I found that one out recently. They would have to renege on the agreed upon for it to change now.

All players are signed to minimum 2 year contract upon drafting I believe? Even recycled ones. If we delist, would have to pay their second year out as Freo did recently with some of their senior listers. Not sure if its different for rookies though(on the min 2 year thing)

We can't have two Hills in the team, the commentators would have a mountain to climb.

Hill couldn't make the WA 18s team but we're going to pick him at 28 possibly on the back of an impressive draft camp , more risky then picking Manson .

From what I have read he is not the toughest player you would ever see but could talk the pants of Ballantyne .

Wasn't his brother a late bolter as well though?

Yes but Stephen Hill was always a first round pick on the back of an impressive 18s series and WP league performances . Brad has only the impressive draft Camp results , Manson I think would be less of a risk although pick 28 for Hill is as low a pick that we can use , so the Eagles really needed to keep pick 45 or pass on the other Hill ( Josh ) .

A player with Hills speed would be beneficial to West Coast , hope it works out well but WCE would be passing on possible optiions on Newman , Yeo etc

Good. Id hate to pickup a player just because he booted a bunch of goals in a substandard league. Especially when we have only two live picks

Hill was considered a middle of first round selection by alot of observers. No knock on him because the draft was freakish.

The upside on Hill is pretty good. He is quick and has rare endurance, he only started taking his football seriously before the champs. He's also an excellent kick.

I guess we will have to find out.
