I made the same comment about Cox when he was just coming on to the scene (it was the game @ Etihad where Hird kicked the winning goal and hugged the guy in the crowd). 8 goals down at quarter time - Cox had not won a ruck contest... i think my word (that are now well and truly eaten) were 'not going to make it - get rid of him'.

Cox was playing some great footy at that time

I remember a Carlton fan at the time telling me that Barnaby French would be a much better player then Cox hahaha

!!!WARNING!!!

In 2003 I proclaimed to all my mates that the Eagles will never win a flag with Glass and Hunter as our KPD's. I'm still hearing about it to this day.

Apparently you're not alone. Embley around 2001-02 was considered an expendable spud by many too iirc.

Hopefully Embers is rested a bit more in 2012. His first half of the season was AA form but he tailed off badly after that.

Embley started 2011 well but really faded in the second half. Thought it was way OTT talk of him possibly making AA. I don't think we will see alot of Embley this year and it will be his last.

I think Embley is still comfortably in our best 22 if fit and healthy. If we manage his games, and give him games off i think he could be a decent part for our finals campaign, unless a youngster blows him off the park and is impossible to drop. Either outcome would be good.

Agree.

You would have to think that the likes of Embley and A Selwood may not be best 22 come years end.

This is the same talk that was going around last last and both were very solid contributors.

I predict both will be the same again next season

Instead of having a 'glass half empty' view I'll go 'glass half full'.

Embley played some great football last season but he did struggle later in the year. Rigors of a long season on an older body.

Is Embley's best footy behind him? Yes.

In 2012 we should use him only when his body is 99% fit and we also manage his workload ala Geelong did this season, the club will use the two games against GWS and Gold Coast to replace older or sore bodies with a in form fringe player ala Stevens, Swift, Brennan, Weedon etc.

We manage these older guys and make sure we have the best list available come finals time.

A fit, fresh and firing Embely would be a big plus come finals.:thumbsu:

I agree. The way he handled Geelong's list is a credit to Scott. Being a first-year coach, he could have been forgiven for grabbing as many wins as possible and worrying about the finals when they came around.

Both are also a year older now and so are those who are going to replace them.

As good as Selwood may be in terms of leadership and all that, his time in the middle is over and we have a glut of small/medium defenders on the list that should really push for a spot. We know Waters wont get dropped and Butler is a fantastic kick, when playing, where as Selwood is not so great.

Embley was fantastic and his good games warrented AA talk, however he has some absolute shockers. Sometimes it was just horribly frustrating watching him.

I don't think they'll fall of the face of the Earth completely, but they wont be the "best 22 lock" that they have been for so long surely.

If we lost Koby Stevens because Embley wanted to float around like a butterfly on the wing(which is essentially all he did in the second half of the year last year), then I will lose my top.

Despote the fact that age is against him its not the sole reason I want him out. Im not calling for A Selwood or Nicoski to go.

What is it then?

What is it then?

No one wants players dropped simply because of age, I want Glass to play for many years more.

There maybe issues with consistency, issues regarding the gap between good and bad games (Embleys biggest problem this year), the push for players that will be around in five years time, and simply being overtaken by better players (I think this would apply to Selwood).

Some of these may be symptomatic of age, but the reason isn't that the number in the age colum is a bit bigger.

Koby Stevens, run'n'carry goal kicking wingman.... yeah don't think so. Face it, it's like complaining that Lynch is keeping Hams out of the side.
