It'll be interesting to see how different Jones looks as a player when he's not playing for Peel.

Well he'll have a better support cast for starters, could also go the other way though as he's no longer a big fish in a small pond

Koby Stevens, run'n'carry goal kicking wingman.... yeah don't think so. Face it, it's like complaining that Lynch is keeping Hams out of the side.

Its obviously beyond your capacity to think a little for yourself so Ill help you out a little. Obviously its not a like for like replacement but we do have Gaff, Rosa, Sheppard and even Smith who could all run as wingmen. One less spot taken up opens up another one for Koby.

Funny story. Embley only kicked 6 more goals than Stevens this year as a 'run and carry wingmen'. Obviously not directly comparable a Koby was playing WAFL but its not as ridiculous as it sounds.

Funny story, you can't look up stats worth shit

2011 Goals
Embley 17
Stevens 0

You also don't replace an outside player with an inside grunt player so Koby wouldn't get his spot either. Koby would be gunning for Priddis, Kerr or the likes spot so Embley leaving the team doesn't create a space for him.

Think you'll find sTeel was referring to Koby's WAFL stats.... (he kicked 11 goals)

Maybe select the competition Stevens played in? wow.

You also act like we have never played inside mids outside of the square? Priddis Masten and Shuey all spent extended periods on the flanks this year.

The thing with the old fellas (just like the Aus cricket team) is that they need to be performing considerably better than their younger counterparts to be justified a position and therefore taking away development.

There is also the need for the right mix of youth and experience.

Not going to get into the argument over which players are where but I guess it also depends on where the team is positioned on the premiership trail. I think after finishing top 4 we would see ourselves in a position to again push for a GF birth and therefore guys like Embley/Selwood/Nico/Lynch would be given the benefit of the doubt over up and comers.

Good chance that Embley, Glass, Selwood won't be around or in Selwoods case getting a game in 2013.

Priddis and Masten on a HFF is disastrous and Shuey as you well know is not limited to an inside mid like the other two.

My mistake considering here I was comparing actual competitions they both played in

Ryan Murphy kicks bags of goals in the WAFL year after year, zomg let's draft and play him ahead of Josh Kennedy who is an obvious hack who doesn't kick as many goals even though it's a different competition with better opponents!!11!!!

Heck i'm sure there's a guy in the WAAFL 4th grade who's kicked more goals then all of these guys combined so let's throw him into the comparison as well for shits and giggles.

Stevens doesn't have the speed or ability to run and carry to be a wingman, considering this is Embley's usual position and not the flank you are trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Even for the half-forward flank I don't think he's quite there as he doesn't have the goal kicking ability of others such as Strijk and co.

So, change the team structure that got us into the top 4 for Koby Stevens... still sticking to my analogy and your obvious inability to get it.

Both completely missing the point. Embley didnt have half a good a year as everyone was making out. Early seaseon was quite good and then trailed off badly and capped off by being one of the worst performed in 2 of our 3 finals. Add to that, Embley has at absolute best, 2 years left in him of which we will continue to wonder which Embley will show up each week.

Losing Stevens for that is ridiculous.

What's any of that got to do with Koby Stevens?

Steel does have a point.

Koby and Embley aren't directly competing for the same role within our 22. However should Gaff and Rosa force him from the 22 then Koby might be able to force his way in for some more game time.

It's exciting, plenty of unanswered questions remain.
Kerr, can he get over his injury issues.
Masten, he's injury prone, takes time to build form and he hasn't totally convinced.
Swift is below par and will probably get dropped by Stevens if he already hasn't been.
Shuey will he step up for more midfield time or will he continue to spend close to half his game time as part of our forward rotation.
Priddis, lacks utility. Did ok in 2011 but still doesn't rotate like our other midfielders.
Scooter, can move away from a full time tagging role and find himself a more open role within our midfield rotation?
A.Selwood, where does he fit into things with Scooter and McGinnity who are faster, stronger and more flexible?
McGinnity, now ready to step into a full time tagging role?
Hill, Newman? Can one of them replace Ebo or will Koby be given that chance?

Koby can find a place with or without Embley.

Yes his second half of the year wasn't that great but his first half was AA quality. He then started copping a hard tag most weeks given how damaging he was and that is paying a compliment to his performances.

All in all he was a very solid contributor in 2011 so give it a rest he deserves another year no doubt.

It's hilarious how Embley was the 2010 post season villain, has some really great form, wins us a fair few games and yet is still shaping up as the preseason boogie man.

AXE HIM NOW

He's old and his inconsistency in the second half of the season did him no favours.

He will start best 22 in round one, im not convinced he will finish the season in our best 22.

Can one of them replace Ebo or will Koby be given that chance?

I think that's an under-rated point.

Stevens is nice and solid overhead and is a good set-shot for goal. I think the coaches would love it if a dynamic player like Hill can add some real pace and "livewiredness" to our forwardline, but if he can't, I think Stevens can provide a like-for-like replacement for Ebert across HF, playing as forward utility, providing a midfield rotation and plenty of forward pressure.

Either way, I hope Stevens gets a chance. I would hate to see the Eagles stick with the older group, fall short of a premiership and have the younger talent leave due to lack of opportunity.

Which would work if Gaff or Rosa were playing as an Inside mid or flanker which neither of them do, so them forcing Embley out of the side still doesn't create a space for Stevens

Koby can find a place without Embley and has to because if he is relying on Embley being ousted to get a spot he's barking up the wrong tree.

Embley will play between 12 >16 games this season excluding finals.

Stevens IMO will play between 10 > 15 games this season.

Either natural injuries provide players with rests and others with opportunity. At this level you need to be fit to play well.

With the underlying quality of our 2nd 22 we would be smart in having a simple philosphy on selection. If you are carrying an injury into a game you'r out. Have a game off and get the body right.

We certainly won't lose much in resting a sore Embley, A Selwood, Butler, Hurn or Waters if they are replaced by a Smith, Sheppard, McGinnity, Stevens, Swift, Hams, Neates, Brennan, Stevenson or Wilson. Josh Hill......

Sure we still need to get games into all these blokes and I didn't even mention any of this years draftees.

No older player will ruin the chances of a younger up and coming player, too many variables to even consider. If you are good enough you get your chance, and Embleys proven he's good enough.:thumbsu:

From preseason reports it does sound like Koby is burning up the track. He should be given a chance in the preseason and if he shows good form then a spot in the round 1 team would be a lock.

I think Geelong really magnified the advantages of resting players throughout the year heading into a finals campaign.

Last year we probably didn't feel we had the depth or the luxury of doing such (trying to secure a top 4 position) but I have a feeling we will be more confident to try it to a degree this year given its benefits.

This should give second tier guys like Lycett, Stevens, Shep, Swift, Hams, Strijk, Brown, Newman etc some games should their form warrant it.

I remember the calls on this board in July & August 2009 for A.Selwood to be released from tagging duties to play an offensive role. It was a bad idea then because A.Selwood was decent / good at his tagging job at the time.
Now, calls for Scooter Selwood are popping up wanting the same change. I'm against it. Scooter has been quite good at shutting his opponents down while still managing to average roughly 20 possessions himself and be influential. A tagger that does more than just shut his opponent down, can win his own ball, and provide extra grunt to the midfield while at it is valuable and needs to stay put in his current role, IMO.

McGinnity is a decent enough small backman, but having him on the ball as WC's main tagger will be somewhat to the detriment of the team, as it's a drop in quality from Scooter to McGinnity. Stick with Scooter. If it ain't broke...

Agreed. I'm a big fan of Paddy and felt he saved us a few games last season but ideally you want him as a utility rather then midfield tagger. He could also be that real good shut down small defender we've been missing for many years.
