I hate Tomic but TBF I think he earned it this time around. Any other Australian who'd beaten 3 top 100 players in the last week without dropping a set would have got one.

I think it was his presumptious attitude that pissed me off late last year when he withdrew from qualification at the last minute due to illness. Was apparently seen practicing the following day.

Any other young player would get out of their death bed if it meant a crack at the Australian Open main draw. No doubt Tomic and his entourage knew the wildcard would be probable, so they cotton wooled him.

I don't think the WC was probable this time. However with his results in qualifying for the Sydney tournament have meant that he deserved the WC this time around. Jason Kubler would have been in line for one this time around, but he got injured. We don't have any other kids who are anywhere close to playing MD of the open. Where is the proof that he was practicing the following day? I have seen no photos or video footage, and maybe someone who is jealous of him spread this. We just do not know whether it was true or not. It can't be a reason not to give him a WC. Unfortunately children are products of their parents and Bernard certainly is of his dad. But at the moment he is one of our most talented players and needs to play the AO.

What are the chances we get a Hit for Haiti for the flood. Wouldn't mind going as I'm not going to get much of the slam this year.

heavy rain predicted in the next 3 days in Melbourne.So the qualies will not start until friday? That will not be fair for the qualifiers who qualify , might have to play 4 days in a row.They can ofcourse play in the RLA, but thats just 1 single court

I wouldn't say hes been handed everything on a silver platter. Two wildcards last year and two wildcards this year, which is what he has received from Tennis Australia is hardly over the top. Carsten Ball received 4 last year from Tennis Australia! Who else do you give the wildcards to?

3 victories over players who will be in the MD of the Australian Open proves that he deserves to be there.

He didn't withdraw from Qualifying, he withdrew from the Wildcard playoff, an event that not all the Australian players always attend. Qualifying starts today. He claims the practice was a fitness test. Was it? Only his team knows, but considering other players have skipped the wildcard playoffs over the years and still received a wildcard with little or no fanfare shows its a bit of a beat up by the media.

The main problems that TA had with Tomic was not his withdrawal from the wildcard playoffs but his schedule. It was much too light, and you cant climb the rankings if you're not playing.

Yep, Tomic is very well justified and really just a media beat-up who have no clue what they are talking about it. You beat 3 players who will be in the draw and qualify for Sydney that show a hell of a lot more than Ball who has basically done nothing for months now, really apart from the Slams (which is probably why he got the WC), he had a disappoiting year. Plus the fact Tomic is defending a roudn win after taking the eventual semi-finalist to 5 sets, it was the right chocie. If he hadn't of done what he did in Sydney, theen there would be a case.

Too bad the Aussies are usually sucky at these types of things, cause you know they're gonna wheel them out.


Thinking of checking out the qualies tommorow, anyone know which gate they usually let people in from? Back one near the trams?

Yeah, I wonder if they do have an actual capacity for an amount of people but you can just rock up on the day and get a ground pass.

Looks like the weather is going to start similarly as last year, nice and cool with a couple of showers, hopefully no major interruptions like the first day however.
