2011 Collingwood Draft Prospects Thread

I would like the following picks to occur at this years draft IMO:

1st selection - Taylor Adams - drafted to replace Luke ball as the inside midfielder, incase Josh Thomas doesn't come on.
2nd Selection - ????
3rd Selection - F/S -Startevitch - drafted to replace cloke or dawes in years to come.

Also, I think you're forgetting that guys like Dayne Beams, Steele Sidebottom and Jarryd Blair aren't actually small forwards - They're just playing up forward because they can't get a gig in the midfield due to the likes of Luke Ball.

My point is, Ball's replacement is already on the list.

Another thing: You think Starcevich is worth drafting just to replace guys that are 23/24? You'd want to think he could potentially impact before his 7th/8th year on the list...

Definitely in the rookie.

Only going by my limited exposure to Eddy here but he does not impress me. Yes he kicks his 2/3 every week being our primary target but apart from reasonable mitts he does not have any outstanding attributes. And I'm not that sure we have a need for a third tall with our structure and press.

Our best forward structure has contained Macaffer as a third marking target. As long as Eddy can do all the defensive stuff I think he could fit our structures. We are defintely light on for forward marking targets so I understand the speculation over Eddy. Whether there is a better prospect in the ND or Rookie than Eddy as a marking forward is the real question?

He seems to have good agility to me. But yeah maybe not the sort that a smaller player like Macaffer would have. I just think we lack depth in marking forwards and Eddy is an option. But I take your point, if we drafted him that would be my concern also.

Don't get me wrong mate, he does have charisma, I'm just outlining the reasons why he might not get drafted, not categorically against him being on our list.

I think he meant more in the circumstance that one of those two went down. Yeah we have both Brown and Tarrant to potentially fill that void but they'll, in all likelihood, both be gone by 2014 by which time Starcevich would be 21 and a handy back-up (if he keeps developing).

TBH I really don't see any holes in our list atm except at a stretch maybe that 3rd marking option up forward (if he were old enough and available Mayes from S.A would fit that role to a tee) but Maccaffer will play that role when fit anyway.

So I won't bother putting forward any names because (outside of a ruckman) I'm 100% sure we'll go best available with each live pick we have and it's impossible to know how the club rates each individual without inside info.

A few examples of leftfield selections of late were Seedsman and Stubbs last year, Bolton with our last pick in the rookie draft off the back of a clinic run by Maxwell, Sinclair before Thomas in 09 and Buckley at the end of 09.

Also I believe we'll only have two live picks this year (with Bolton upgraded as the 3rd list change) which would impact on an effort to target a specific area of weakness.

Note: When I say outside of a ruckman its because we've used first round picks on ruckman in 3 of the past 4 drafts in Ceglar (2010), Jolly (2009) and Wood (2007) not to mention the obvious addition of Witts at the end of the year.

Just on a replacement for Ball I think we've definitely got that area covered internally atm, but if we were to look for an inside mid I'd rather we chased Koby Stevens than use a first round draft pick in the 2011 draft on one.

Stevens went higher than the pick we'd get (he went at 20 we'll get something around 25) and would've gone higher still if it were't for injuries in his final year of U18's. He's currently not getting games with WC and is a Vic boy so he may be vulnerable.

Also weren't we pretty Keen on Stevens in his Draft Year?

Would not give up a 1st Rounder for Him.

But hypothetically due to some unforeseen circumstances such as Thomas wanting to go back home and we needed a replacement I'd gladly give up our first round pick of 2011 for him, because WC would be after much more than our second pick which will be around 45.

Put simply there's just very little chance that a player as good as Stevens will fall through the cracks to us in this draft as its simply a pretty average draft after the first 10-15....

It isn't much but the following link shows that Buckley's been involved with him before while he was coaching with the AIS so you just never know.

Why are we looking at Luke Ball "replacements" when the man is 27yrs old and playing his best footy? He has a shitload of time left in black and white.

Also, we have those replacements already. Names like Beams, Blair, McCarthy Josh Thomas etc are the guys capable of getting the job done in the centre square.

Whilst we are still a long way from draft, personally we need to add another couple of talls, both in defence and attack as insurance and to develop.

I'd argue that our forward line is functioning better this year than it did last year. Having said that, I am a Macaffer fan and hope that he gets back into the team.

I think Cloke is performing better. Not sure about the forward line as a whole (comparing to last years second half). I still think if Cloke and Dawes aren't up we miss an alternative marking target. We didn't have this problem last year with Macaffer up and about. Brown has helped a bit in this area since he came back into the team though.

Yep, I too am a Macaffer fan. He completes and compliments the forward line beautifully and it looks so much more balanced with him the side.

We are in a very fortunate position not to have to make any drastic moves to improve our list position. Its young & well balanced.

As such I would think we would just take the best available this year. Being so far back in the pecking order makes it difficult to plan.

However, if I were to look at the negatives of the list, I invariably say rucks. Always is an issue. Its possible Jolly only has 2 years left in him (after this year). Therefore now is the time to be grooming & recruiting young ruckmen (like Witts) to fill his shoes and there must be multiple options. Otherwise we will just trade again for a ruck when the time comes - not the worst strategy.

My other area is the key defender posts. Tarrant & L Brown is good cover for now, but once again they may only have 1 or 2 years after this year. Key defenders usually slide down the draft order so we could pick up a good young defender at our draft position. We really cannot have only 2 guys (Reid & N Brown) capable of holding down CHB & FB - must have depth here. Hoping Lachlan Keefe is that man but you never know. As mentioned the same can be said for key forwards - another marking option would be good, Tarrant & L Brown can do this role but not for too long.

They could take a super agressive policy in this year to the trade table with GWS. Securing a few quality high picks or 17 year olds for some experienced players. Putting all emotion aside it could be a one off oppurtunity to set up the club for success over 10 years. It can give Hine the chance to pick the next Thomas & Pendlebury.

For mine our most glaring hole is the lack of a developing KPF. Since Dawes has been promoted a few years ago, we have not moved a young developing forward onto our list.

Gordon has come on as a KPB and Keefe can play CHB but no FF or CHF.

Only player you could consider would be Stubbs but inside word from my Hawks contacts is that he was delisted for a reason...he's not that great.

We need to look to recruit strongly in KPF area.

Have heard that GWS is keen on him. Which makes it tough, but would be the perfect solution to one of our only list concerns. Must be on the radar.
