2011 crowds

My Round 3 predictions:

Collingwood v Carlton: 83,000
WB v Gold Coast: 20,000
Adelaide v Fremantle: 38,000
Richmond v Hawthorn: 50,000
West Coast v Sydney: 40,000
Melbourne v Brisbane: 39,000
Geelong v Port: 24,000
St Kilda v Essendon: 45,000

There was 50k there tonight for a Sunday twilight game against a side in Melbourne who have very few supporters. Hawthorn v Richmond next week on Sat night will have 60k+

Round 2 crowds

Western Bulldogs v Brisbane (Docklands) 22,331
Hawthorn v Melbourne (MCG) 49,905

The decision to play the Hawthorn game at 4.40pm and the Bulldogs at 1.20pm has perplexed me all week. The Bulldogs game was always going to be poorly attended, not sure why they didn't have that at 4.40pm and Hawthorn v Melbourne in the early afternoon - probably would have got 60K.

Nearly 50,000 was the best crowd I can remember for a Hawthorn v Melbourne clash for many years.

Round 2 crowds

St Kilda v Richmond (MCG) 41,465
North Melbourne v Collingwood (Docklands) 40,578
Port Adelaide v West Coast (Football Park) 23,214
Gold Coast v Carlton (Gabba) 27,914
Fremantle v Geelong (Subiaco) 37,004
Western Bulldogs v Brisbane (Docklands) 22,331
Sydney v Essendon (Stadium Australia) 28,082
Hawthorn v Melbourne (MCG) 49,905

So....

Round 1: 317,628 @ 39,704

270,493 for round 2 @ 33,811 ave
47,402 DOWN on 2010.

YTD: 588,121 @ 36,757 ave
2010: 655,004 @ 40,967 ave
DOWN 66,883 overall

lowest round 2 total since 2005 (248042).
lowest first 2 round aggregate crowd since 2006 (541087 @ 33,817)
the 36,757 ave is just lower than the season average for 2010 @ 36907, but ahead of the 2009 average of 36195.
round 2 average is lower than the 10 year average for this round of 37,413)

It's time they stop playing games at anz stadium

Why? We wouldn't be able to fit our fans into SCG! It has become an annual event for us. Tickets are booked well in advance. There is always a huge black n white presence in Sydney for the June weekend!

All much of a muchness really, perhaps when you write "ahead or up" you can put that in green, to offset you red ! :)

I dare say with Collingwood, Carlton next weekend the crowds will be up, but anyone will tell you that averages wil be down this year, but aggregate will be up.

Huh? you get more there than SCG.

The crowds have been declining at ANZ for years now, whilst they've stayed consistent at the SCG. Whether that's due to losing the bandwagon support that jumped on after 05/06 who would go to the ANZ games as they were the 'blockbuster' games. Or it might be that the fans who would come from the west to Homebush are figuring they'll just wait for the Giants to come in.

The AFL would desperately hope it's the latter but it's probably a combination of both.

Has that game ever drawn 60k?

Anything over 20k for Dogs vs a side from interstate is a pretty good crowd. Especially given they got flogged the previous week.

I think we got something around 44k to the Collingwood game last year.

The SCG holds 46k. I'd much, much rather stick 44k into the SCG than ANZ.

The SCG is an amazing ground when it's packed.

Oh I think the next three weeks is more than going to make up for it.

R3 - Collingwood v Carlton
R4 - Carlton v Essendon (Rich v Coll normally does ok too on a Fri night @ G)
R5 - Collingwood v Essendon (already sold out apparently - and Haw v Geel to boot)

they aren't getting big numbers to games to that dump any more. a full house at the scg would be heaps better

Is the impact of Vlad and Anderson constantly changing the rules and making the AFL a worse spectacle finally kicking in?

While there are areas where you can criticise the leaders of the AFL overwhelminly the spectacle of football is determined by coaches .
It amazes me that there are still coaches that haven't realised that if you want to win a game of football you must play attacting football to win .

I think its a case of poorly scheduled matches, and various inconveniences that impact peoples ability to attend. To be only 40k down on last year with all that in mind is not bad at all.

last year
- Carlton played richmond in R1 before 72k (down to 64)
- Geelong played Essendon in R1 before 58k (hasnt happened yet)
- Collingwood played Melbourne in R2 before 50k (hasnt happened yet)
- Hawthorn played Geelong in R2 before 68k (hasnt happened yet)

Plus

The Big drawing clubs have played
Carlton - Richmond (64k), Gold Coast (gabba) - new club with few members.
Collingwood - Port (etihad), North (MCG) - both clubs with low interest and turnout.
Essendon - Bulldogs (etihad), Sydney (ANZ), both clubs with lower interest
Richmond - Carlton (64k), St Kilda (MCG) - St Kilda fans seem to be protesting their club atm.
Hawthorn - Adelaide (Aami), Melbourne (49k) - this has been ok
Geelong - St Kilda (Etihad), Fremantle (PS)

so not too many of the big matches there, some ok ones, but for the most part just run of the mill AFL games. That changes over the next 3 weeks - and big time.

Good response, Wookie..
This season the attendances in NSW and QLD are going to be interesting.. Attendances at the Gabba and Metricon could be lower than expected, with both teams looking like they'll struggle this season.. And of course people still being focused on getting back on their feet after the floods.
Sydney should be roundabouts, and I've always got the feeling that Swans fans would rather see their team at the SCG than ANZ, and should be getting mid-to-high 20s each week if they keep playing well.
But there is a good chance the Eagles will start drawing bigger crowds as their form seems to be pretty good so far this season. How long that will last is anyone's guess though.
At any rate, the attendances for Collingwood, Essendon, Richmond and Melbourne home games should go up this year.
And we've yet to see Collingwood play at the G. Their fans can't seem to find Etihad, but when they start playing at the G, you have to expect those numbers to shoot up.

No there won't be 60,000+ at the MCG for Richmond vs. Hawthorn.

If we were playing Essendon, Collingwood, Carlton, or Geelong - you know one of the big drawing teams then there'd be 70,000+ on Saturday night.

50,000

Thats not entirely fair to richmond supporters. they turn out in droves...when they want to. This matchs attendance could range from 40000-70000, depending on weather conditions, traffic conditions, phases of the moon etc etc etc

IMO there has been some absolutely great games in the first 2 rounds, the quality of football has been good. Flooding has been reduced with the Geel V Saints game the obvious exception. If you get 2 to 3 games as good as Syd v Ess every round, most punters would be happy.

Keep in mind that last year round 2 was the Easter weekend, so I would imagine that crowds on the Thursday night and the Monday were pretty big last year. Hard to compare the early rounds as the placement of school holidays and Easter vary from year to year.

Picture will be clearer after Anzac Day round.

Care to put a wager on it?

55,000 is halfway in your range.

I'm happy to bet it'll be below that.
