They'll get back there eventually. Crowds would be a lot closer if it wasn't for terrible Sydney weather and flooding in Queensland which made going to the footy the least of peoples concerns.

But we're seeing a shift to a new benchmark, with new teams coming in, so there is limited value comparing crowds to the last few years. Crowds should remain fairly solid given that the largest Victorian clubs are at, or around, the top of the ladder.

If every single one of their games were a sell out both the Suns and GWS would both have an average well below the league average. Its quite possible that the average won't be back up until 2018 when Perth gets its new stadium.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, Melbourne, Fremantle, Adelaide, North.

Crowds down:
Geelong, St.Kilda, Bulldogs, Sydney, Brisbane and Port Adelaide.
Some of the decline in this grouping would be somewhat alarming for the AFL.

Can't read too much into the Sydney crowds, the weather's been shocking for most SCG games.

That's all well and good but most of the remaining 16 teams are not facing capacity constraints and there's no reason to suggest that other teams won't continue to grow. Sydney should rebound somewhat following an unseasonally wet winter, while prospects in Brisbane will also improve next year as the effects of the floods diminish. Football in Adelaide also will not remain as depressed as it is currently, and there's plenty of scope for improvement there. More importantly memberships continue to rise.

The average attendance last year for the home and away season was 36.9K. If GC and GWS average 17K per game each them then the rest of the league has to average 40K. It might take until 2018 for the league ex expansion sides to average 40K but that would still reflect very good growth in attendance (practically the equal of growth between 2000 and 2008).

Ultimately the average is misleading during times of expansion. The most important thing is that more people are going to the football this year than ever before and that record will almost certainly be beaten again next year.
 
A quick look at the stats will show average crowds trended down for a few years when Hawthorn, North, footscray joined and again when brisbane adelaide and then again when freo, port joined.

The historial trend is largely upwards - would ahve been even bigger if ground capacity still trended upwards (replacing 70k waverley with 50k docklands, 55k footaball park with 50k adelaide oval))

What a nothing story

its like the players getting a bigger slice of the cake - they will in 2012 because there will be 12% more of them at GWS and GC - with their own salary caps.

it would mean, for example, if the number of draftees eack year stays the same, that a third of all players would get an extra year in the AFL system so a third of them would get an average 36% increase in career earnings

No wonder AD is pissed off

Apart from Geelong the reason the other clubs you mention as being "down" is due mainly to their poor form and with Sydney they have had a terrible run of bad weather on match days at the SCG.
Games played at Cairns,Darwin,Canberra and Launceston help to pull the average down.

Overall taking into account factors beyond the AFLs control the crowds are excellent.

Its the N (sic) RL should be more worried as their crowds are also down more than the AFL.

Last weekend the AFL had almost 300,000 the nRL struggled to get over 100,000 and thats if you believe their figures LOL

The AFL crowds and the rest of the codes/sports in Australia = daylight.

Im with Cristine Nixon the HUN has become a scaremongering/muckraking gutter rag more interested in a sensational headline than the TRUTH!

The numbers are still terrific, but as a hungry sports body we strive for bettering our results every year.

History will show that numbers may dip and then surge again, so the AFL may not be too worried but as we all know they want the non-Victorian clubs growing at all costs, yet the performances and recent attendances with Port Adelaide, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney may have them slightly edgy.

The averages have gone down no question and the AFL will be mindful of that, yet they'll still shout out for record figures attained this year.

Some teams will invariably grow some legs next year also and with the advent of GWS, you'd think a number like 7.8mil will be on budget.
 
I think posters have identified the key reasons for the decline in crowds for some teams:

Sydney: Ridiculous bad luck with weather, ANZ novelty has worn off
Brisbane: Floods and terrible on-field performance
Adelaide/Port: Terrible on-field performances, public sick of AAMI

However I think the worst thing we as a sport could do is take the throwball approach and just identify excuses (weather, Origin effect, suburban stadiums, ticket prices, better on television, traffic, transport, superleage, blah, blah, blah). The reasons for these drops are certainly real, but they must still be dealt with. For example AFL isn't moving into to Adelaide Oval 'till 2014, so there need to be strategies in place to get people to AAMI for two more years.

In any case, the sky isn't falling, and we're still one of the highest attended leagues in the world. For all the talk of Gold Coast Suns crowds, as the link below demonstrates, while they are the lowest drawing AFL team, they still outdraw every NRL team except the Broncos and Canturbury. Tellingly, that includes the Gold Coast Titans.

Not bad for a team that's been around for 4 minutes.

Thats were your wrong. Adelaide and Port Adelaide haven't been a significant factor. Adelaide is only 7th and Port Adelaide 9th.

Collingwood doesn't really belong there as Finals are included and that with the possible extra 60-80K they'll get there, will level out their overall average.

Other than possibly Fremantle, the other teams have no hope of catching up to last years averages.

Adelaide's drop in attendances since last year isn't that dramatic, but two seasons ago in 2009 we were averaging 38k. That's a drop of 5k in two years. If you go back a bit further we were averaging 43k in 2006. That's a drop of 10k people per game over 4 and a half seasons. Port have been
haemorrhaging supporters for a decade. Attendances in SA (over the past five years especially) are a concern, especially given that we face two more years at AAMI.

But still, while an average attendance of 33k is a cause for concern for the AFL, most other sports in the nation would kill for those kinds of numbers :D
