I was surprised to see Israel seeded so looked up the records and they are #10 in ITF rankings. They've got a good doubles team and Sela is a big fish on the challenger circuit but rather strange they are ranked ahead of a country like Croatia. Their davis cup run from a couple of years back must be weighted to the extreme.

I think that the rule for playing in the Olympics is that you have to represent your country in the Davis Cup the year leading up to the Games. As Fed just played, I think it qualifies him for the Olympics, so it would not surprise me if he did not play.

You would think it would be played at Melbourne Park. Even without Federer the Swiss would have a strong team but from a pure entertainment viewpoint wouldn't it be great to see Federer play. We've been starved of a good home tie for years, looks like we've finally got one

No they dont. Without Federer they only have Stan Wawrinka there next two highest players are ranked 152 and 208.

Chiudinelli was there abouts last year. He managed to play some 1000's that's gotta count for something. Apart from our two singles players we don't have a lot. Should be pretty close

Still stronger than us.

Not the worst draw but not the best draw. At least the tie will be at home so Tomic is not taken out of the occasion as he would be if the tie was being played on clay. I don't think it matters to much if the tie is played on grass or hard, there is no real advantage even with Tomic and Hewitt's record on grass, it'll probably be too impractiable to dump a grass court in somewhere for a playoff tie unless they play in some makeshift stadium again at a grass court club like they have mad makeshift stadium in Townsville and the Fed Cup tie in Glen Iris. Maybe Sydney or Adelaide is due for a tie...

All of this doesn't really matter if Federer plays anyway because if he is in, we aren't winning the tie, so maybe we should play the tie in Hobart in hope that it will be too far and too cold for him to come down.

Melbourne Park is too big of a stadium for a World Group Playoff tie.

Don't say that it would be awesome, it's been far too long. There's nothing on at RLA during the period so there's no reason why they can't play it there. By playing at Melbourne Park we might get some publicity for a Davis Cup tie, something that has been lacking for a while now

It's a multi-purpose arena, it could be booked out. But it doesn't matter anyway, the difference of interest between a World Group SF with two of the best players at the time and a World Group Playoff with Federer possibly not coming and no Australian ranked in the top 70 is huge, won't sell enough tickets especially during Finals time.

Might be Memorial Drive's turn to host a tie.

7 Will show this tie yes? They showed Australia Vs Belguim last year.

They are contracted to show World Group ties (including Playoffs) so yes they will but remember how they dodged us last year when it rained on the Sunday and they didn't show play on Monday.

They will probably just put it on mate. Given it's a weekend, 7 will be far more interested in the footy

Well the tie is going to be played in Sydney on grasscourts. Smart decison IMO. I think if Federer doesnt play we could take this tie. If Federer plays i give us zero chance.

Excellent news. Sydney is the home of Australian Davis Cup tennis, and the grasscourts at the RSGC are an outstanding venue. Methinks I will have to try and snag a ticket to this one.

Unfortunately can't see us winning it. Switzerland were one of the worst teams we could have drawn.

Who do people like for the various playoff wins? I'm guessing at:

Japan v India
Russia v Brazil
Romania v Czech Republic
Israel v Canada
Chile v Italy
Belgium v Austria
South Africa v Croatia
Australia v Switzerland

Japan/India, Chile/Italy and Belgium/Austria are the most interesting matchups to my mind. I am really just guessing with my predictions there.

I guess a lot of this will depend on who each country fields. Most of them have one or two key players and then a gulf to the second stringers.

I would agree with all them. Although i could see Belguim beating Austria and i think Japan/India could go either way.

I can see Chile and Israel winning, too. I guess it depends on whether Gonzo and Raonic play.

Using a makeshift stadium again, much like the Fed Cup tie a few months ago. Obivously can't argue with the choice. Now we wait and see whether Federer turns up...

Raonic is out with a hip issue, don't think he'll be ready for that DC tie, especially a hostile tie in Israel.

Ah, the matches have been announced:

Day 1:
Tomic vs. Wawrinka
Hewitt vs. Federer

Day 2:
Hewitt/Guccione vs. Wawrinka/Federer

Day 3:
Tomic vs. Federer
Hewitt vs. Wawrinka

No surprise there, neither Hewitt or Wawrinka are 100 percent fit coming into the tie but are still the team's best options by far. Pretty tough for Australia coming into a tie 2-0 down as we basically are, going to take a tough effort to win this thing. I don't know how Matosevic got up for this tie but he's in the team and what Ebden has done not to get in the team...
