Still a bit of polish to do on my write ups but here is the early draft on Kersten:

Shane Kersten
DOB 15/3/93 Ht 190 Wt 88

Kersten is your classic old fashioned full forward very much in the mould of Fevola or for watchers of the NEAFL Darren Ewing. He has a brilliant set of hands and is far and away the best mark of anyone in this draft. He makes marking looking easy with superior judgment of the ball in the air and fantastic soft hands. He just plucks it out of the air and you wonder why the hell the other players aren’t doing the same thing. When the ball is on the ground he is equally good being very clean (top 10 in the clean hands test at the Combine this year) with an uncanny ability to know where the goals are and then put it through for a goal.

The big knock against him is his height. He comes in at basically smack bang on 190cm which is short for a modern FF but is in fact pretty much exactly the same height as Fevola. His lack of height may cause him some issues but for me I take him every time over a guy 5 cm taller with no real idea around goal. The other issue for him this year has been that he missed 14 games (including all of the Champs) with a serious elbow injury. He returned at the end of the year and added some real spark to the South Fremantle colts team. He picked up 18 goals in the last 3 rounds of the home and away and managed a very nice haul of 5 in the colts GF. This is all whilst being on a seriously low fitness base on his return. Its worth noting that he played seniors for South Fremantle last year and acquitted himself very well. As a bottom aged player last year at the Champs he also managed 15 goals to lead the way if memory serves.

As mentioned he is carrying a bit of extra condition at the Combine and did not test particularly well. He always needed to improve his endurance to play to his potential at AFL level and the time out didn’t help him. He only managed 13.08 in the beep last year which gives you an indication that he is going to be in for a lot of pain for the first few years whilst he builds up his endurance. Last year though he did a very nice 2.88 in the 20m which is the kind of speed teams love their forwards to show. Kersten definitely has the speed to get separation and he has the smarts to time it right and lead to dangerous spots. His repeat sprint time was also good last year in 24.39 and his agility was solid. For me there is no question that he has the athleticism to play at AFL level. He is not much of a chaser atm and this is something which he will have to improve. If someone is close by he is a pretty reasonable tackler and he has the pace to shut them down quickly. He just needs to desire and fitness to do it more often.

Kersten is an excellent shot for goal having a balanced approach and a big leg on him. He is dangerous from outside 50 and is a dead-eye dick from tight angles. Given how good his goal kicking is you would expect his field kicking to be better but I get the impression he has not worked on it that much and he often tends to be lazy with his passes. Again this is something which I think will clean up okay with a little work in a full time environment.

Overall there are a few areas which he needs to improve on but the kid has the makings of a gun full forward. He has had things a bit easy at junior level and needs a work ethic drummed into him but the words coming from his coach seem to be okay. Kersten is one of those guys who when you see him play just seems to have that little bit more time than those around him. He reads the play better and gets to spots to influence play without really seeming to make any particular effort. He is a major talent imho.

I agree I think that he is a major talent, and one I would definately pick up. Also great write up.

Would he have a place in our team? He is a similar type to A-Corn and Karnezis in some ways. He is more talented than A-Corn, although I prefer A-Corn's marking. To me they would not all fit in our forward line as we would still lack that dominant bigbodied tall. (Maybe Lisle)

Quite a few potential draftees have been identified for our early picks 8 and 12. Let’s not forget we have pick 30 as well. If previous history is an indicator Hadley will look for that special player who has not matured and developed yet but possesses the X factor and a year or two in the system and diamond from the rough emerges.

For this pick my choices will be in” Order of Preference”:

Eliot Yeo from - East Fremantle WA
A tall midfielder (he stands at 189) agile, athletic with clean hands and good skill set, good decision maker and for an underage player in the WA colts competition has lots of development potential once in the system. Has that X factor look about him.

Brendon AhChee
Another tall wingman come outside ball carrier. Athletic runner with nice skills he is 190cm and comes from South Fremantle in WA.
These two should be available at pick 30 however should other recruiters take a good hard look between now and draft day both may be elevated up the draft order.

...and if we realy want to take a risk with our last pick on someone that can either be the second coming or just as likely go home after three weeks of hard training we may take a punt on Waylen Manson. He is 195cm forward – from regional WA in the Kimberley.
He played a few invitation games for Claremont colts so that recruiters can have a look at him. Comes from regional WA and was invited to the combine by quite a few clubs. Performed reasonably well in the testing considering he has not been in the colts system at all.
Throw of the dice on Waylen, but it could pay off.

My prediction at this stage...

Kavanagh at 8, Kersten at 12.

I'd be very happy with both these choices to eventuate. Pretty much resigned to the idea that Hoskin-Elliot will be snatched up and I think Kavanagh would be the next best option when considering a quick, classy mid who can also win their own ball. Some seem to think he could become the better of the two. Just like the look of Kersten and I think he'd be a good fit for us going forward.

I try and slip a Div 2 player into my top 10 each year. Its a bit hard this year but I am leaning toward Dobosz atm. I think the professional guys will rate him pretty highly and he could shoot up draft boards as we get closer to the real thing. I rate Dobosz and Kersten pretty similarly and could see both going in the 10-15 range.

On pick 47 - Offsider and Irel what are you thoughts on Joel Hamling? I like the kid a lot and think he could be a good high reward type pick at that stage.

On Manson does anyone else get the feeling that the Muzza appointment might foreshadow the selection of an indig guy or two perhaps even Manson? Its been a fair few years since we have selected an indig guy I think and most of the guys we had have moved on. Davis having worked a lot with the indig guys in the NT would help a lot I think in getting them settled in.

That was one of my immediate thoughts with Muzza's appointment, but I have my doubts - especially with Manson. Reportedly Claremont had a hard enough time getting him down to Perth, let alone to the other side of the country. I have my doubts that the Club would have confidence in combating that sort of home-sickness/cultural factor. As an example of how difficult it is, I'd argue that Melbourne's indigenous program has not been a significant success.

so if kavangh or WHE was available, which one would you guys pick, sounds like kavangh has better kicking and handballing but WHE plays his position pretty well:confused:

I'd take WHE without blinking but I have already preemptively mourned him. He'll be gone before 8.

Kavanagh is nice compensation.

This.

WHE with 8 and Kavanagh with 12?

Midfield overkill.

I wouldn't be shocked to see the club going tall with both early picks, even if they are 'reaches'.

We need quality regardless of the position. Can't afford to gamble on maybes with these high picks. Speculate with the other picks IMO.

Agree on this one.

Cant see GWS leaving Wingard on table for Port. Port would in turn take WHE before us.

Patton, Coniglio, Tyson, Wingard, Will Hoskin-Elliott, Longer should be taken one way or the other before us (unless someone rockets up the draft order late)

Leaves one GWS pick in the air (possibly a KPP) and then us.

its a difficult one.

do they take wingard ( and he seems a player sheeds and choco would love) and risk another player , or

do they let wingard slide to 6, knowing that port will pick him then leaves them able to say leave longer to 7 which they may not trust to leave say hoskin-elliott and longer because they dont know which way we will go. they cant risk longer so in that case longer has to be gone by pick 5 and so does wingard. leaving wingard and longer enables them to be quite confident in taking longer at 7 thereby taking their pick of the players.

ie, patton, coniglio, longer, tyson, wingard, leaves hoskin elliott or buntine to port, gws get whichever is left.

patton, coniglio, tyson, buntine, hoskin-elliott, port wingard gws longer.

in the end this is just a way that they can play it out, if they want wingard then they will take him and so be it with whichever prospect they lose to us.

to be honest i see it as gws have plenty of inside ball winning mids and will be looking for speed so it may go this way..

patton, coniglio, hoskin-elliott, kavvanagh, longer, port tyson/ buntine ( would hopefully and very likely take tyson), gws take buntine at 7.

that leaves you with all the main midfield targets gone at 8 , but some very good prospects left.

Joel Hamling
Another Claremont colts player.
To be frank I have not taken much notice and it could be an oversight. This year I have been preoccupied with other non football related matters and have not given enough diligence to make a more informed opinion on Hamling. I remember him playing very well for WA vs Tasmania and I thought then I should put him on my radar but escaped closer scrutiny.
At the risk of doing young Joe a disservice I will abstain making an opinion on this one, one way or the other. However I’d be interested if you think he is someone we should pay more attention to.

Unfortunately we only have four picks and some of these players who have slipped closer scrutiny may need to be drafted through the Rookie route.

Greene sounds like a fair target to me. I wouldn't be so sure GWS will pick so many outside players with those picks anyway but we'll see.
