Re: 2011 Draft Discussion

Thanks for that, I have seen Kersten and he is really impressive but I don't think he will be able to play a KPP role at AFL level.

Jack Darling board. ;)

There are plenty of examples of players under 192cms having good careers as a forward.

Hopefully we draft a KPF, KPD and two midfielders in this draft if we do end up using five picks (we still are picking up Newell with our last pick?)

True, I thought we were taking Newell in the rookie draft:confused:

I think GWS will go Patton, Coniglio, Tyson, Wingard, Longer top 5 for GWS. Could sub Maybe Wingard with WHE. Port will take either of Longer/WHE/Wingard, GWS to then maybe look at Buntine for a defender role at 7. WHE is a chance at 8, but i think he has that x factor that is good at a new club.

Small sample from my mock.

Jackson Merrett
187 / 70 / 93
Recruited From: Geelong Falcons
Bio: Outside midfielder who great leader qualities. He's super quick, great kick and isn't afraid of the inside stuff despite been very skinny.

pick 8 MUST be kept for a decent midfielder end of story

with lisle and hopefully tippet coming in that should be about it for talls

where as you can never have to many elite mids

so that would leave 8,30 and 52?

8-best mid left

30-hopefully one of the half backs like mckenzie or ellis are still available or maybe grigg with his eliet kicking skils

52?-ruckman

Personally think we should 100% hang on to pick 8 and use it for the best outside mid/ HBF with speed and who can use it (please WHE?).

If we don't use pick 12 for Tippett I personally would go for Talia as I think he's the best Key defender available in the draft. Need a succession plan for Merrett, Staker, Maguire.

Trying to work out strategically who GWS would take before our pick (assuming the Tippett trade doesn't eventuate).

I think that you guys are right in saying that we'd like a tall and an outside mid or flanker with our two early picks. It stands to reason that GWS will try and take the best options off the table.

I can see them taking both Longer and Elton in the first 7 picks now. That gives them a ruck, a forward-ruck and a power forward (Patton). That is pretty much your ideal set-up in terms of talls and GWS have the opportunity to make it happen. They'll also be concerned that we may well take Elton at #8 and there is a long gap between him and the next best of his type.

That would mean a split of 3 talls and 3 smalls with their first lot of selections. Assuming Conoglio is going to be one of the 3 smalls, it then means that they'll likely take 2 of Tyson, WHE, Buntine, Wingard and perhaps Sumner. Port will take one of those which leaves 2 for us to choose from. I don't think it is set in stone who GWS will prefer - they get to mix and match types and I note that they already have 3 "grunt" midfielders in Scully, Palmer and Ward. They may decide to go outside with their selections which may take Wingard off the radar slightly. Tyson plays all round so would be a good, solid choice. I think WHE is becoming more and more a probability but I don't write Buntine off either. In fact, with the mix of players they recruited, I could definitely see GWS take both Buntine and WHE even though Tyson is the safer choice. Buntine and WHE just complement their existing set-up so well.

With all these machinations in mind, I think there is some possibility (but not a certainty) that we'll get one of Tyson or Wingard, if we so choose. That would be an outstanding outcome IMO. Having said that, if I am wrong, then I'd be equally rapt in Buntine or WHE if they were to slide to pick 8.

In all of this, I believe Elton is the wildcard. While I don't think he is necessarily rated in the top 7 players, I think his "type" is so valuable and so rare that GWS, with their range of early picks, will want to get him. To do that, they need to pull the trigger at #7 because they will believe that we'll be all over him at pick 8.

Half agree POBT. I'm not 100% sold on GWS going for Elton, it would depend on how they rate him. I think they will go best available with their picks, and i believe they have stated that as well. So it comes down to how highly they rate him. It stands to reason that we will get 2 good players with 8 & 12. I would think Port would take Wingard if he is there, being a SA boy IIRC. We have enough grunt type mids, we must find a fast mid to join up with Polec. Quick fast player, good user of the ball and will kick running goals.

You have sold me on Buntine to GWS though i think.

Yep good analysis POBT.

It's likely we'll take best available mid at 8- even if Elton is available here I think we're better served by getting a solid mid, as Elton's form has apparently been a little so-so this year, so some risk for our first pick.

Elton probably won't be available at 12, and I'm coming around to McInnes here. 194cm KPD/KPF, very mobile, ability to play both ends. With Lisle on board hopefully our quality tall stocks are considerably enhanced.

At 30/34 do we continue to build on tall depth- I'd be inclined to- get them developing and then the next few years' drafts on mids/flankers which come on a bit sooner. Dobosz as a J Brown replacement and Tom Downie as a developing ruck (as well as rookie-ing some likely rucks).

The one deficiency on our list is ruck/forward. McKeever is doing ok at the moment but we should have another developing. Ben Brown is probably the best option here, but it may depend on how many players we want to draft this year. I'd use 54 on him rather than risk him sliding to the rookie draft.

I think they will go best available with their picks, and i believe they have stated that as well.

I am sure that is what they are saying in public but I am also sure that they won't.

IMO, they will address 3 things for each selection:

1. Who is the best available player?

2. How does that player complement the players already on their list (including those taken earlier in the draft)?

3. What is the likelihood that the player will be there with their next pick?

They can't afford to get to the end of the first 15 picks and say "oops, all the good [insert position] are gone and we didn't get any of them." They won't want to end up with an unbalanced list. They'll play this as smart as possible and if that means that they don't take a better player with an earlier pick because they know said player will be available with their next pick, then so be it.

This is exactly how Gold Coast played it with Lynch and Gorringe. They wanted both, rated them highly but took an educated punt that both would be available later. It just makes good sense.

Of course, GWS may not rate Elton at all. But that is why he is a wildcard IMO. He could go anywhere from 7-20 and it not overly surprise. And where he is drafted will shape the draft for other clubs, including us. If GWS take him, that is one more of the highly rated mid/flankers that could slip to us. Great outcome. If GWS don't take him, we've got a very interesting choice on our hands. The player who fits a genuine need and is somewhat "unique" or the best available midfielder. Tough choice, particularly if we like Elton.

What I would say is that if GWS don't take him at 7, then what is the likelihood that they will take him before 12? Pretty low.

TBH, because Elton plays that valuable forward-ruck role, but hasn't really convinced everyone of his worth, I think he is the most fascinating player in this year's draft.

I wouldn't be surprised if Elton is available at one of our late 20's 30's picks.
Obviously a superficial measure, but Elton's championship highlights are pretty uninspiring.

In fact Tomlinson is rated as a better tall by many commentators, including Emma Quayle. I like Frost and McInnes better as prospects.

Elton probably won't be available at 12,

Do GWS currently have picks 9, 10 and 11? If they rated him (and they believe we'll pull the trigger at 8), then they'll take him at 7. If they don't, it might be a sign that they aren't that keen on him. In which case, if we think he's a good un, do we double bluff and hope he slips to 12?

I'm coming around to McInnes here. 194cm KPD/KPF, very mobile, ability to play both ends. With Lisle on board hopefully our quality tall stocks are considerably enhanced.

It will be interesting if the decision to trade for Lisle impacts on this pick. I am also keen on McInnes but I wonder if we will get this type of player now Lisle looks like joining us. We're not so flush with talls that we can't do with a couple anyway but it will be interesting.

I think we'll end up with Tyson/Wingard and maybe a Kavanagh. Just a gut feel at this stage. Great outcome if it happens!!!
