With 8 or 12 I think we should get a tall.
probably will unfortunetly unless he's a gun

and another thing gws will likely pick all the good talls and could and hopefully will leave some good mids because they already have shiel, coniglio and probably tyson and treloar as gun mids

this how i see them going

1,2,3,4,5,7,9,10,11 patton,coniglio,wingard,tyson,longer,buntine,talia,elton,kersten,bolger

with all the by the sounds of it good midfielders hopefully availlable i would be pissed if brisbane pick a dud tall and miss out on a gun mid but it could be the other way around like buddy and tambling

On the face of it we'd be mad not to draft a young ruckman with one of our first three picks, but by the sounds of things there may only be half a dozen promising young genuine ruckmen in the draft, so that might make things tricky.

GWS will surely take at least one, possibly two rucks with their early glut of picks. If we get to 12 and we're already down a couple of the handful of ruckmen we'd earmarked, we might feel pressured into taking someone who would normally go later.

Got a question on our rookie upgrades.

Am I correct in saying that to upgrade a rookie we need to use up a draft pick?

If that's the case, is it just 69 and 88 that we would be looking at - as they would be fairly worthless in the draft?

Of the rookies available to upgrade:

Mitch Golby
Niall McKeever
Josh Dyson
Brad Harvey

Who would we upgrade? My guess would be Mitch and Niall as they have played a good number of senior games. I would however have thought that Josh might be an outside chance. Is Brad a lock to stay on the rookie list next year, and what are the options to see how he performs at the top level?

IMO you're pretty much on the mark there with everything Gin. :thumbsu:

I would not be adverse to taking Dobosz with pick 12. He will be a riser in the drafts as the "experts" from the papers actually look at film of guys outside of Victoria.

I think we go tall at 12. My preferences:

1. Dobosz
2. Frost
3. Kersten (a little short admittedly)
4. Talia

For 8 I am hoping Grigg is there I would love to pick him up. He, WHE or Buntine would all be solid options and at least one will be on the board. Need to have a look at Cavanagh more.

At 30 grab a Taswegian maybe Brown or Schade perhaps. A reach for sure particularly with Schade. It wouldn't surprise me if we had someone in particular in mind.

At 47 take a punt on a tall guy who could be anything. For me that guy is Hamling from WA. Jack Frost is also a guy I would look at here.

So one small and three talls this year. Sounds about right.

Don't forget Staker will be on the LTI for the whole year, so one of Mitch or Niall may be left as a rookie and then elevated in his place. Although I can't quite recall the rule for third year rookies, I though they can be kept on if both parties agree (obviously).

agree to an extent but surly as i posted above gws are going to mainly go for talls which should leave some good options available at 8 and 12 and imo brisbane still need some good mids especially quick ones

Agree, But I think we need pace at #8 which is why WHE or Kavanagh would be my options, Hopefully one would be available. I agree with Dobosz and Brown, not sure about you but I rate them very highly.

Our need for talls or much more Important than our need for mids IMO. I think Elton or maybe even Dobosz at 12.

agree to an extent but as i have mentioned i really think gws will take all the decent talls therefore leaving duds for everyone else

GWS have done a really good job with the guys they have in place atm. Up forward they have the likes of Cameron who you could put up there with Patton as far as KPF talent goes. They also have Folau who has looked pretty good and then Bruce who I liked a lot last year.

Hampton will play as a runner probably from HB and has really nice height. GWS will also take Mohr as a mature ager who will start at FB. They have poached Phil Davis also who is a good young tall. Giles will start in the ruck as a mature ager and Phillips has made the recruiters look silly for passing on him last year (I did try to tell them last year). Casley, Hombsch, Segrave and Turnbridge are all over 6.3 as well.

They will certainly take some talls but realistically the talent is with the smalls and they will go with talent first. They will go with Patton and Longer certainly early. After that though its a bit of a lottery and you could make a strong case that none of the others warrant being in the top 15. Having said that I do think they will take another KPF and a KPD before they finish up at 15. Dobo, Kersten, Frost and Talia would all be in their sites.

On our mids I think the need is being overplayed. Assume we pick up another mid at 8 this year. Next year we would be looking to add to the current group our three top picks from the last three years and Polec and Bartlett should add pace. We have also already added Zorko who will certainly get some mid time. Bewick and O'Brien also will likely get a look in and I personally have high hopes for Harwood. Thats at least 7 guys who were not in our 22 at the end of the year.

Also early reports from the coaching staff is that Hanley and Banfield will play increased time through the midfield. Suddenly there is a lot of guys with pace going through there and I don't really see the need to prioritise getting any more speedy mids.

Crap forgot my favourite player. Add Green to that list of pacy guys looking to break into that midfield.

Dont disagree with you entirely there Quigs, but on the flip side we have lost Power, Black is likely in his last year, McGrath probably only has a couple of seasons left backpocket is still a mystery and Raines is a stop gap.

Personally I would love at least one more quick midfielder with good- very good footskills to fill in the rotation.

Charles whilst I agree another quick midfielder with very good footskills is always going to be handy I think our severe lack of depth at the KP spots necessitates that we spend some quality picks on them. Browny is not going to be around for ever and we all saw what happened with Merrett went down this year. The cupboard is close to bear there and we need to spend some high picks in order to give us a better chance of getting some quality guys in there to develop.

On Raines look for Newell to push for that spot early. He already has better skills. It will be interesting to see how he tests. From what I have seen his endurance looks first rate.

I do agree with most of that Quigley. We do still have a few players to come though, however we can't rely on them making it. I can see us going a quick mid and a KPP with 8 and 12, but only if the right mid is there. A good user of the ball with pace is what we need, if we dont' like the options available, i don't think we will hesitate going tall with both picks.

We now have Retzy, Acorn, Lisle for KPF and McKeever as KPB, that's not much to go on going forward. None of those players are sure bets, and the problem is only going to get worse with Brown a few years away, and then really Merrett is only a few more after that.

I said in another thread that we don't really need to draft mids, because with the likes of Green, Beams, Polec, Harwood, Bartlett all not getting into the team yet, there is plenty of players that can have an impact next year, along now with Zorko. All a pretty good prospects as well. We don't have the same depth in KPP.

Actually, TBH, in the time i've typed this post, i've just about talked myself into 8 and 12 being KPP and perhaps getting Zorko is a sign of that. Even with Lisle being a swing man, all he really does is cover Staker for next year, we still need some more talent developing. A KPF, KPD and maybe a ruck at 30 would not surprise me at all.

Quigley, any idea who the young ruckman coming through our Academy program are and how far they are away? I would guess that our first chance to draft them is next year?

We seem to have a fairly decent pack of mids now albeit mostly very young and unproven. Would really like to see us pick up a skillfull half back flanker in the next draft or so with our depth there being shallower than our mids at the moment, unless we can turn some of our mids into this role.

most people don't agree with me but if Longer was available at #8 I would be taking him and would not blink twice.

I think you'd find that most people would agree with you. If Longer somehow made it to 8 we would be calling his number before AD finishes calling us up for our next pick.

I could see Polec and Bartlett doing this job off half back. Even though you would like them kicking goals or hitting up forwards, they would be great options bringing the ball out. Break lines and are pretty good disposal wise. I would expect to see Ash stay up forward next year and at least 1 of those 2 play off half back. Polec probably needs to do a little more work defensively first.
