Interesting this draft order. Although I would love WHE I think we will get 2 guns regardless which is the luxury of having such high picks.

Probably give him a pass for ND but definitely give him a rookie spot if available. Disposal and speed aren't really up to standard. On the bright side he's a quality leader and has an amazing workrate.

Irrespective of height. We should be all over this kid with one of our 8 or 12.

Yeah, should be available at 12 I would have thought.

Grab one of those juicy mids at 8 and Kersten at 12.

Elton leaves me thoroughly cold. Seems much more potential for greatness in Kersten.

Definitely mid at 8. Don't know a lot about Kersten except he's been likened as a Fev style player by some. Will have to check out his highlights. WA Boy, correct?

Still a bit of polish to do on my write ups but here is the early draft on Kersten:

Shane Kersten
DOB 15/3/93 Ht 190 Wt 88

Kersten is your classic old fashioned full forward very much in the mould of Fevola or for watchers of the NEAFL Darren Ewing. He has a brilliant set of hands and is far and away the best mark of anyone in this draft. He makes marking looking easy with superior judgment of the ball in the air and fantastic soft hands. He just plucks it out of the air and you wonder why the hell the other players aren’t doing the same thing. When the ball is on the ground he is equally good being very clean (top 10 in the clean hands test at the Combine this year) with an uncanny ability to know where the goals are and then put it through for a goal.

The big knock against him is his height. He comes in at basically smack bang on 190cm which is short for a modern FF but is in fact pretty much exactly the same height as Fevola. His lack of height may cause him some issues but for me I take him every time over a guy 5 cm taller with no real idea around goal. The other issue for him this year has been that he missed 14 games (including all of the Champs) with a serious elbow injury. He returned at the end of the year and added some real spark to the South Fremantle colts team. He picked up 18 goals in the last 3 rounds of the home and away and managed a very nice haul of 5 in the colts GF. This is all whilst being on a seriously low fitness base on his return. Its worth noting that he played seniors for South Fremantle last year and acquitted himself very well. As a bottom aged player last year at the Champs he also managed 15 goals to lead the way if memory serves.

As mentioned he is carrying a bit of extra condition at the Combine and did not test particularly well. He always needed to improve his endurance to play to his potential at AFL level and the time out didn’t help him. He only managed 13.08 in the beep last year which gives you an indication that he is going to be in for a lot of pain for the first few years whilst he builds up his endurance. Last year though he did a very nice 2.88 in the 20m which is the kind of speed teams love their forwards to show. Kersten definitely has the speed to get separation and he has the smarts to time it right and lead to dangerous spots. His repeat sprint time was also good last year in 24.39 and his agility was solid. For me there is no question that he has the athleticism to play at AFL level. He is not much of a chaser atm and this is something which he will have to improve. If someone is close by he is a pretty reasonable tackler and he has the pace to shut them down quickly. He just needs to desire and fitness to do it more often.

Kersten is an excellent shot for goal having a balanced approach and a big leg on him. He is dangerous from outside 50 and is a dead-eye dick from tight angles. Given how good his goal kicking is you would expect his field kicking to be better but I get the impression he has not worked on it that much and he often tends to be lazy with his passes. Again this is something which I think will clean up okay with a little work in a full time environment.

Overall there are a few areas which he needs to improve on but the kid has the makings of a gun full forward. He has had things a bit easy at junior level and needs a work ethic drummed into him but the words coming from his coach seem to be okay. Kersten is one of those guys who when you see him play just seems to have that little bit more time than those around him. He reads the play better and gets to spots to influence play without really seeming to make any particular effort. He is a major talent imho.

From the same article:

While Geelong and Fremantle expect to make five or six selections, most clubs are intending to take their minimum three, and some will take just two ''live'' picks, using a rookie upgrade to meet their quota.

I had forgotten that rookie upgrades could be included in the minimum three draft picks, but nevertheless I feel that Brisbane will take at least three draft picks and use the fourth (pick 47) only if there remains a desired player, or leave the spot for a PSD selection.

Agree with your summation. All I can add is that the knock on him not chasing down and keeping the forward press in the forward line may be directly linked to lack of stamina and serious training regime.

The same deficiencies that exist with Acorn are mirrored in Kersten. That is the only dilemma. Do we have room for two of the same?

Thanks for all the info peoples. Really like the stats from 2010 champs.

Sounds like a potential gun but I can understand Browndog's concern with his height. 190cm is small for KPP.

Still if he is strong and quick on the lead then he can negate lack of height to an extent.

Any chance he is still growing?

Agree that a 190 clever ff will beat a 195 ff hands down. It's also good to hear that he is good at ground level. He really does sound like fev. He was quick off the mark, got separation from his opponent and took marks out on the lead. Fev was also a great crumber though too, and it sounds like Kersten would be similar. Being a WA boy I would think he would be a target of ours.

Him at FF with Lisle CHF certain isn't bad going forward into the future, and that's without the possibility of Tippett. As long as we keep a good CHF that can get around the ground, having a player like kersten at FF certain doesn't hurt. Bringing in kersten and lisle will put some pressure on acorn too.

Great write up Quigley on Kersten, pretty well much make a good sell there. What are your thoughts on mids at 8. WHE will be gone in my mind and i for mind can't get Kavanagh out of my thoughts.

Not at all. Bradshaw was 191 cm's & Dunstall 188 cm's. But both of these guys were powerfully built units. Quick off the mark.

Even smaller for a full forward was Richard "Ossie" Osborne at 182 cm's. He relied on his speed, leading to the ball & he was a terrific mark too. Great kick for goal.

True but I think that the trend is towards taller players all over the ground. We're seeing tall players with phenomenal athleticism. There is absolutely still a place for the slightly undersized marking forward but they would want to be exceptional in other parts of the game.

Perhaps Darling is the forefront of the trend turning back to marking forwards of a variety of sizes. I suspect that it is more likely that Darling is going to be the exception rather than the rule. Therefore, whilst not completely determinative, height for a KPP is going to be a factor in the recruitment decision. As I said, the player needs to have lots of other strings to their bow if they are giving up a couple of inches in height to their rivals.

It's interesting, because the feeling i get from the club is that (and i'm pretty sure it mentioned this in Kerr's review) we will use upto pick 47, yet we wanted a high pick for Clark because we don't really rate the depth beyond about 15, atleast not in getting great players. I would assume 47 will be a project tall, either ruck or ruck/forward, depending on who is left. It was also mentioned that we didn't rate the talls in the draft, atleast not around the 30 mark, which is why we were happy to pay 29 for Lisle, so you would assume we will go small with 30. That leaves 8 and 12, and i think we will go pretty much best available, but will try for another tall. Now who we pick there might depend on who we rate, whether that be Kersen or Elton or someone else. It's hard as past about 15 or 20, people start rating players very differently, so it's hard to tell if someone like Kersen we view as a top 15 player, or someone we expected to be available at 30 still, and as such would rather Lisle over.

With only 2 clubs ahead of us in draft day, it's still hard to work out what kind of player will be at 8, because GWS could do anything.
