Yeah I agree but don't really see too many blue chip options so we may go for a project type with a later pick(30 or 47).

Unlike to 'reach' with our early picks methinks. Kerr has said that in our view pick 12 is significantly better than pick 16, whereas it wouldn't have mattered if we were going to reach for someone.

We have some versatile talls already, and Lisle provides a big body. If we have the need for a tall, it's a power forward - but that's only Jonathan Patton. Best available I think.

With picks 8 and 12, I'd be OK with two midfield/flanker types provided both are highly skilled and have no concerns on their athleticism. I think we have need for skilled players in the midfield and across both half forward and half back. Buntine would be a perfect outcome for us but that looks increasingly like a pipedream.

I don't think we need another hard nut midfielder if there are questions on his skill or mobility. Someone like Tyson would be great as an all-round mid though.

I do agree that the ideal outcome is to grab at least one tall with those 2 picks. All signs point to that being our strategy. But I don't think Hadley will reach for the sake of reaching. If his preferred talls are gone, I don't expect him to pick one that he rates outside the top dozen.

The beauty of Hadley as a recruiter though is that he marches to the beat of his own drum. I would bet there are very few draft experts or indeed other clubs who know what is going through his head. That is to our advantage because I have no doubt that GWS will manipulate their picks in the top 14 to ensure that they get the mix of players they want at the cheapest possible draft price. But that is going to be difficult for GWS because Hadley has proven that he isn't in tune with the consensus on the draft.

I don't think it is likely, but as I've said, I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.

It certainly sounds like we'll take at least one tall early. IMO if the club genuinely rates two talls in the top 15 then they should take them, even if it is a slight 'reach'. They need to get multiple talls in sooner rather than later. There's far more likelihood that they'll be able to top up with "plug and play" smalls in future than a tall.

*shrug* I just know we bigfooty-heads tend to get a bit mid-centric. I know from my perspective it comes as a result of a gen-y-ish need for instant gratification. Who wants to wait for years until he's ready to play?! Thankfully I'm not the Lions list manager.

Having said that, as Quigley suggested someone like Schade might be on their radar with a later pick. A reasonable chance of locking down fullback in future while not being 'sexy' enough pick to grab early. Who knows what's going on in Hadley's head? Can almost guarantee on draft day though that there'll be a few 'WTF's?!' flying around here.

This may sound insignificant, but I'm interested to know. If we were to draft and rookie a ruckman, it could mean playing 3 ruckmen in the two's. If the rookie was from outside Qld would it be better for their development to play a season in their local comp, and only call him up to brisbane if/when injuries occur?

Actually taking this a step further, could we do this with say Blake or another senior ruckman. If like last year we don't use all our rookie slots and have a spare $55k. If Blake was going to play VFL anyway (although under this scenario it would have to be for a standalone team), it would be insurance to pay him the $55K as a mature age rookie and all going well he could stay in Vic and pocket the money.

If someone is rated in the top 15 by our recruiters and we take them at 12, I wouldn't call that a reach. I'm not sure clubs would be that exact with their order. If someone is rated about 20th, and we take them, we're getting into reach territory IMO.

But whenever I do one of those "next flag contender" sides, I see a lot of gaps still. The talls are a critical need somewhat assisted by Lisle's recruitment but gee I'd love a high quality rebounding half back and a bit of class running forward of centre.

They were (unsurprisingly, given they were a premiership team) certainly far better stocked with talls than we are.

Glass, Gaspar, Gardiner, Hansen, Staker, Cox, Seaby, Lynch, even Hunter and Jones were tall-ish.

I'm not suggesting we're set for smalls, just that we have a more pressing need for talls.

I agree, you can never have enough quality midfielders, but no doubt you need that big bloke in front of goals finishing off the good work of the little blokes.

I remember that Fitzroy in the mid 70's, had a fantastic brigade of little blokes eg like Wilson, Murphy, Irwin, Allan, Conlan. But we had very little KPF's until Beecroft, Quinlan & Walls come along.

I would love to see us pick Greene at 8 & Kersten at 12.

I fit into that line of thinking as well. Buntine and Hoskin Elliot would be a nice package at 8 and 12.

Yeah, someone who is good defensively, but can set up our attacks. a 70m player, will run 20 and kick it 50m. We need a few quicker ball carriers to just run the ball down a bit. But, i think just 1 outside mid will do us in this draft. Bewick, JOB, Polec and Bartlett still have to show us what they can do.

Well I wonder how realistically the lions believe they can land Tippett next year.
AI think in the position oour list is currently in take the best possible players is the main thing in the draft either way. Although we do have guys like Harwood, Bartlett, Green etc who we hope will become gun league footballers there is a chance none of em will make the grade.

IMO we need a tall defender more than a tall forward anyway which is why I am not certain about Kersten.

I try and slip a Div 2 player into my top 10 each year. Its a bit hard this year but I am leaning toward Dobosz atm. I think the professional guys will rate him pretty highly and he could shoot up draft boards as we get closer to the real thing. I rate Dobosz and Kersten pretty similarly and could see both going in the 10-15 range.

On pick 47 - Offsider and Irel what are you thoughts on Joel Hamling? I like the kid a lot and think he could be a good high reward type pick at that stage.

On Manson does anyone else get the feeling that the Muzza appointment might foreshadow the selection of an indig guy or two perhaps even Manson? Its been a fair few years since we have selected an indig guy I think and most of the guys we had have moved on. Davis having worked a lot with the indig guys in the NT would help a lot I think in getting them settled in.

Personally I have not seen too much of Hamling, although his U18 champs was pretty good, albeit against the weaker teams. He seems quite athletic, vertical leap stood out a bit, and his skills were ok. I would see him more as a late pick up or rookie at this stage. Very inconistent, and I have doubt over his marking and ability to play KP at a high level.

I think we could do worse than select Henry Schade at 30 if available. I really rate his future potential as a CHB/FB and think he should be closely considered.
