It seems the Brisbane board has hopped on the WHE bandwagon this year.

This follows on from:

2006 - Mitch Thorp
2007 - Brad Ebert
2008 - Jack Ziebell
2009 - Callum Bartlett
2010 - Dyson Heppell

FWIW I think people are overestimating the predictability of the draft. Conca was the bolter last year, after the BigFooty concensus had him going at about 20.

Mine was slightly different to our BF group think.

2006 - Joel Selwood (think due to Troy pumping his tyres saying he's the best Selwood in their clan yada yada and we just had a void in midfield)
2007 - cant remember, would've been a dud for sure
2008 - Tom Swift
2009 - Callum Bartlett
2010 - Lynch (GC forward). TBD's posts did convert me to Heppellism. :D

mixed bag - Glad I am not a talent spotter :p

Murdoch is an interesting one, he is athletic and very fast, with a nice kick, yet my issues revolve more around is marking and game sense. Still the potential is there and he is a nice height for a winger IMO.

I actually don't mind Bolger, I don't see mobility as that much of an issue and he gets round the ground well. I like his actual ruckwork, and he has neat skills for a ruckman. I agree he had a poor champs, but I can see the future potential especially after coming off a 2 year injury period. I think he is capable of being a number 1 ruck, but not capable of being a second ruck option in the modern game.

I haven't done a write up for Bolger given I don't have him in my top 50 atm. Below are my current write up on Murdoch which seems to largely accord with your thoughts.

Jordan Murdoch
DOB 23/3/92 Ht 190 Wt 80

Murdoch is another of the plethora of guys this year who are just a little bit too short to be a KP but are not really mids either. Murdoch looks like he has grown a couple of centimetres this year but at 19 its probably unlikely he is going to get much bigger. I do think however that he has some potential to develop into a tall speedy wing.

The thing that really sets Murdoch apart from the crowd is his pace and teams are always trying to add pace to their sides. His elite speed will get him drafted. Murdoch was involved in the SANFL finals and missed the Combine so he had to attend the State Screening where he ripped out a 2.76 20m time just outside the record set my Wilkinsen last year. From watching him in games I wouldn’t have thought he was quite that quick but he certainly does show really nice pace at times during games and I have not seen him run down when at full gallop.

A player I think Murdoch could develop into is Issac Smith of the Hawks. Murdoch plays predominantly as a forward but he has shown some skills further up the ground. He is a left footer who delivers really nicely into the forward 50. He has excellent touch on his passes. He has good penetration on his kicking and going for goal he had several goals at the Champs from the 50 or just outside. He can fade them a little when he leans back for distance but there is nothing that worries me in that regard.

When he is up the ground he is more of a receiver than a ball winner and when he does get in the clinches his hands are not particularly quick. He tends to circle the ball a bit does not attack it with his pace as you would like to see. When he receives it he is often a little flat footed but he has excellent agility and he can avoid tackles with that and his pace. He seems pretty clean when he receives the ball and I haven’t seen much to indicate that he is prone to fumbling. When he gets some space he is difficult to contain because of his pace and agility. He also has a pretty fair baulk that allows him to get around defenders.

He is one of the best open field tacklers available this year. He has good size, long arms and he is very hard to get around. He maintains balance very well and watches the players core and is rarely fooled by baulks and even when he is his pace and agility allow him to recover quickly. His tackling technique is pretty good although he is not a thumper more of a wrap up style.

Up forward he is quite a good leader able to create space on the lead. If there is one criticism of what I have seen is that he probably doesn’t do it enough or repeat the effort. He seems to have a pretty good football brain and usually leads to good spaces and when he uses his pace he seems to create separation with ease in dangerous spots. He is not particularly strong overhead and tends to take most of his marks out in front of himself. If the ball is coming in onto his head he can get a little under the ball and not protect the drop zone. As mentioned above he is a pretty reasonable shot for goal.

What I would like to see from him is to improve his endurance. Once he does that I think it would open the game up for him a lot as a wingman in the Smith mould. At the moment he fades in and out of games and lacks the tank to work hard enough to get the possessions he needs to show him at his best. He has a very tantilising skill set and I am sure someone will take him this year.

Rakiwasa - I see him more as a rookie option that a ND pick, good athlete no doubt, excellent vertical leap, also reportedly has good character, works hard and is not afraid to throw his body around. Struggles a bit in reading the game, and played ruck mainly but at 194cm? to short. Will probably end up being a KPD, will take a while but I can't see him being anything other than solid.

Piva Wright - Again undersized at 189cm I think? Definately not capable of being a FB, where he has played the majority of his junior life. Defensively excellent, good athlete and good spoil, strong body. I have doubts over his disposal, and he could work on his rebound. Will he get picked up in the ND? maybe will be touch and go I think. I view his a third tall, capable of playing on dangerous medium sized forwards. Really needs to work on his offence IMO.

Yep both Kersten and Elton were overlooked as 17 year olds. The downside on Kersten IMO is his height stops him from becoming the number 1 key forward, and his defensive abilities are non-existant.

Without knowing too much about the players and just going on what people on this forum say, it looks like the GC did really well with their KPP's even prior to the draft while GWS haven't been as lucky so it would be interesting to know why they didn't think both those guys were worth getting a year early and fast tracking their development.

I'm on the bandwagon of Schade at 30.

Starting to look at where the talent in the first dozen lines up I could see our top two picks being mids/flanker types.

With GWS having so many picks, the top 12 is a bit boring this year. The fact that the talent (by popular opinion) starts to fade away around 12-15, then you can throw a blanket over the rest til about 40 or so, makes picks 15-40 much more interesting i think. I personally can't wait to see who we pick at 30 and 47, probably more so than 8 and 12.

I couldn't agree - pretty excited about 8 & 12. But I do agree that it appears there is probably only a handful of likely candidates with these picks whereas it is a bit of a lottery with the later picks which does make it interesting.

Still think there is a chance of striking it lucky with these picks but would think it is likely players in this range will be projects.

what does every one think about sam docherty? i think we could use a smart defender unlike merret, maguire. There good, but make some bad decisions occasionally.

I excited about actually getting the player with picks 8 & 12, but in terms of on draft day i'm more excited about the later picks, just because it could just about be anyone. 8&12 is probably only going to be a handful of players. no doubt i'll be more excited to see 8&12 actually play next year though.

Can someone please tell me the AFL's not going to persist with the idiotic top-10 countback...?

There should be more gimmicks Bob. Pick 1 gets a meat tray, teams have to answer trivia questions to keep their picks, and the last round is determined by spinning a wheel.

Can Gubby Allan phone a friend if he gets frazzled?
