I'm a little suspicious of the links with Tomlinson and Greene, to be honest. IMO, it smacks of a red herring. I could be wrong but this is the year to keep your cards close to your chest. GWS are going to try and pre-empt who Port and Brisbane are likely to take so a bit of silly buggers wouldn't go astray.
The trick is to get a 'draftee' video of a kid you don't want up on the website, and put a former club person's name on a bunch of negative rumours about the kid you really want.

Gets 'em every time.

The draft is really a game between us and GWS. Port are going to be on a winner regardless of who GWS take (although I reckon they will be hoping that GWS don't take all 4 of Conoglio, Wingard, Tyson and WHE as has occurred in the BF Phantom) so they are a bit of a non-factor in the silly buggers stakes.

But picks 7, 9, 10, 11 are draft shaping for us. Likewise, we're really the only possible fly in the ointment of GWS getting exactly what they want out of this year's draft.

I think Brisbane should go for Tomlinson with our pick 8 (unless WHE or Buntine are there for selection), and then with our pick 12 go for Greene or Kauangh or whatever his name is.

Given just how many picks GWS has, and the level of talent already on their roster, surely they will have some room to take some risks. I would also suspect that Sheedy being as cunning as he is, might snatch up players that they don't particularly need (but couldn't hurt) simply to 'spite' other teams if he knows other teams have their hearts set on them or they may become a real talent on another squad.

Manson at 14 would not surprise me. Way too early but the talent is there and you may as well shoot for the stars at that stage.

Why don't Brisbane look into Waylen Manson at pick 12?

Because there are better candidates available at that stage that are much more low risk. We are at a precarious stage in our list development and I don't think we're in a position to gamble such a high pick on Manson.

Very true. For all his faults Sheeds has a brilliant football brain, and he knows his list will be a long time maturing. Plus he likes to roll the dice, and has a long history of developing indigenous players at Essendon.

If the hype about Manson is deserved, GWS may very well take a risk and pull the trigger. They could also do the same with players like Elton (they need big men) and Kavanagh. Both of which have shown flashes of incredible talent but have doubts about them.

I think there will be a few surprising later picks by GWS after they've snapped up Patton, Coniglio, Tyson and possibly Longer. Mark my words.

I have posted my reviews on most of the others so here is Greene.

Toby Greene
DOB 25/9/93 Ht 180 Wt 78

For many Greene has been the surprise packet of the year. He has come from a mile back at the start of the year to win the Metro MVP of the carnival and just have a great all around year. He averaged 24.5 disposals a game at the Champs and is a very good shot at being a top 10 pick in the draft this year.

Greene is a bit of a baby faced assassin. He is a quiet young guy apparently and combine that with him looking about 12 and it’s easy to underestimate him. Despite appearances though he is a tough inside mid who has turned himself into an absolute ball magnet. He may not be an elite reader of the ball off hands but he is always around the pill and when he gets a chance at the ball he attacks and has very clean hands.

Greene has a midrange top speed but he has a great burst with his first couple of steps. He can explode into motion and use it to clear the contest or shut down the opposition ball handler. He uses this burst very well and it is a feature which sets him apart from most inside mids available. In the contest he has exceptional awareness of where everyone is around him he is very good at deciding when to hold the ball and when to get it away. He is very elusive and has great agility which he uses to avoid being tackled and as a consequence he usually seems to have more time than those around him. He has the ability to hang onto the ball a second or two more than most and waits for things to open up for him. The ability to stop on a dime and then go at full pace another way straight after also makes him a very difficult guy to tackle. Even when he is tackled he has good composure and doesn't rush his disposal.

Although he is predominantly an inside player he does cover a lot of ground and links up well. He can be a bit sloppy with his kicking although this has improved out of sight this year. He does not have much in the way of penetration but he usually weights his kicks pretty well. At AFL level there will continue to be a big focus on his kicking and generally getting more velocity into his kicks but there is nothing to suggest it will not continue to improve as it has done this year.

He has worked hard at improving his endurance this year and this is one of the reasons he has been able to step up and dominate as he has done. He ran an elite 15.2 in the beep test at Combine and he brings this kind of running ability to his game. He is a gut runner who gets to every contest no matter where it is on the ground. He will pop up deep in the back line one minute and then be on the end of the chain at the other end the next.

He is not a particularly good shot on goal and realises it and often will look to hand off. When he does take a shot he is prone to missing goals he should get. Overall though he would be close to if not the best inside prospect available this year and if a team needs help in the clearances he is one they should look at. Further not only will he win the ball in the packs he will spread and work hard in open play. He does need to polish his game a bit but what is there at the moment in very much needed in the modern game.

love the effort you make Quigly, top effort :thumbsu:

just a quick one, when do you reckon your phantom will be up on big footy by? always a good read and pretty accurate as well

mml I wish it was pretty accurate. I am usually all over the shop about where guys will go and have quite a few included that aren't taken at all. Expect that more than ever I think this year.

I will post it next week sometime. I need to do the write ups of why I am taking a player for a particular team and tidy things up a bit.

So, let me understand what you are saying. Sheedy will risk the future of his club, his reputation and the future of young draftees just so he can "spite" another club? ...and what club may that be?
You say this is cunning? I can think of many words to describe this but "cunning" it is not.

The man took Daniel Mc-****ing-Alister at pick 5 (despite assurances he'd still be there at pick 50) over Max Hudghton. Allegedly, mainly to say 'I had the first* Maori to play AFL' (* he didn't).

Logic doesn't seem to play a large part in his recruitment, but I'm just slightly worried, if they let him play a part he is a complete wild card

Chuck a 't' in there and take away the ing?

Can't verify it, but that is how the story goes. Headstrong in the extreme, loved the story & romance, and just had far, far too much power over drafting for how much time he could (not) put into it.
Funnily enough part-timers don't do as well as guys who can get out and watch lots of juniors every weekend.

The Voss/2009 off-season example isn't too far wrong IMHO, just extend that over the 10 years from Judkins leaving (iirc 97) to actually putting Dodoro full-time into recruiting (2006 or so) then getting Keane (08).
