So, let me understand what you are saying. Sheedy will risk the future of his club, his reputation and the future of young draftees just so he can "spite" another club? ...and what club may that be?
You say this is cunning? I can think of many words to describe this but "cunning" it is not.

Perhaps spite is too strong a word for it (did you see the inverted commas? :p) but there's no doubt that Sheedy is a risk-taker, has an ego, most likely is the type to have a few enemies (and a few grudges) and now has plenty of picks to play with.

I think if he was calling the shots, perhaps he'd let his judgment be swayed to some extent by how badly certain other teams wanted a particular player. He does like to play strange tactics ol' Sheeds.

I'd just draw some of their members out of a hat and let them pick who you take.

I honestly hope that GWS have someone else in there but I can't see anyone on their club website and I haven't heard of anyone else. I'd take Snoop who did GWS in the BF phantom draft well ahead of Gubby.

I would've thought Silvagni would be in charge on draft day. He's been in charge of the scouting I think.

Well atnleast you would think Gubby would be smart enough to pick the likes of Patton and Congilio with one of their top 5 picks.

Ok so I have recently found out that Jarrod Harding a SA kid that GWS picked up last year as a 17 year old has been delisted under strange circumstances. I have not heard that it is homesickness but I stand to be corrected.

He has a ton of talent, and I would say that at pick 47 for example he would be best available. He is a medium leading forward with midfield capabilities. I liked what I saw of him last year, and haven't seen him since. He kicked 66 goals i think last year as an underage player in the U18's SANFL comp. He has pace, very good marking ability and improving midfield capabilities. He has some tricks and could be a decent part of a forward line. I would have a look, pending on why he was delisted.

I would be surprised if it was not homesickness. You are right he has talent.

Bit off topic but why is the draft held at the end of November? I understand with school usually finishing up around then but I think it would be far more beneficial for the draft to be at the start of November. That way each club can get their players starting some kind of pre-season training, diet etc so they are further ahead and have an easier transition then coming to their club 3-4 weeks after the pre-season training has begun.

School is the main reason. It also allows the AFL to keep people interested/engaged over the off season.

Trade week... Draft camp.... Fixture announcement....International Rules... List lodgements...National Draft... PSD/Rookie draft...NAB Cup....

Have to space them out.

They do a pretty good job keeping us hooked considering there is no footy being played.

Can't verify it, but that is how the story goes. Headstrong in the extreme, loved the story & romance, and just had far, far too much power over drafting for how much time he could (not) put into it.

I've also heard similar stories from an ex-Melbourne recruiter who said Essendon recruiters were left pulling their hair out after Sheedy had over-ruled them at the draft table. Sheedy would prefer players with character over the recruiters recommended. Courtney Johns was an example that was used.

As for GWS using picks to spite us, I doubt it will happen.

GWS will have a list of players that they want to draft, and they wouldn't waste a pick to spite any clubs. The only place where it would come up, would be if GWS rated two players equally and knew another club was keen on one of those players. GWS may decide to spite the other club but without costing themselves.

I think it is mainly a bit of spin by Sheedy to get clubs nervous. I think GWS rated the top 15 of this draft highly and dont hold the bottom 2/3's of the draft in high regard. They are building a young list judging by the recruits of Scully etc and hope to have a list of youngsters that will all be at their peak in 5 years.

Mitch Grigg

Strongly built at 182cm and 82kg, ball magnet Grigg once had weight problems but is now a ball of muscle. While he openly admits he will never be a speed machine, he starred in the endurance tests at the AFL draft combine, registering a 14.13 beep test and a 10.29 3km time trial.
Grigg - SA's MVP at this year's AFL under-18 Championships - was so impressive that 16 of the 18 AFL clubs lined up to interview him.
Only Greater Western Sydney - armed with 11 of the top 14 picks - and Gold Coast overlooked him.
Selected in this year's All-Australian under-18 team after averaging 24 disposals at 69 per cent efficiency at the championships, Grigg is tipped to be picked between selections 20 and 35 at the draft, although some mock drafts have him going as high as No. 15 to Richmond.

Question to Quigley(and and anyone else who knows about this) are there any indigenous players that could fall into our hands? Could really use some indigenous players in a Lions jersey. At the moment, we've only got 1(McGrath). Me feeling is that every club has at least 2 that provide an X-factor. Got any possible players? Cheers~

Hopefully the recruiters base their decisions on ability, not race.

Manson's stocks soar

Melbourne have become the first club to meet Kimberley teenage sensation Waylen Manson in Darwin as interest in the athletic forward mounts in the build-up to this month's draft following an avalanche of goals.

A number of clubs are assessing Manson and there is speculation that Port Adelaide have him among their contenders for their prized first pick, No.6 overall. While that would be a shock, he is unlikely to be available when the Power re-enter the draft at No.45.

this should always be the criteria, it makes no difference where they come from if they have the talent/potential they should be picked.

i recall andrew d in one of his spare-time moments mention hat the afl were considering introducing a quota system in to team lists, ensuring that every team had a certain number of indigenous players on their playing list. I don't think this is necessarily a good idea, pick should always be on talent not race. if they all happen to be indigenious great, but if not, no.

A quota system in any forum is fraught with danger as you lose the dynamic of best available.

There are not usually many indig talls and that's what we will probably be going for this year. Manson is the main exception this year I think.

On the small front I would love to get Wingard at 8. Can't see it happening but you never know. The other guy who I am thinking would suit us is Murray Newman - plays a lot like Nahas of Richmond. Small forward who will play a lot through the midfield with creativity and toughness.

I was wondering if getting Murray Davis into the coaching team was an indication that we were targeting an indig guy or two. We haven't haven't much luck on this front for a while and he did a great job in the NT.

Port are in no position to use pick 6 on Manson.

Personally if he does go top 10, i hope it is not to us.

Yes, the gamble could be worth it, but we really aren't in a position to gamble.

If he does go high, that gives us a couple of more chances to secure a higher rated slider, and who knows who that could be....
