this should always be the criteria, it makes no difference where they come from if they have the talent/potential they should be picked.

i recall andrew d in one of his spare-time moments mention hat the afl were considering introducing a quota system in to team lists, ensuring that every team had a certain number of indigenous players on their playing list. I don't think this is necessarily a good idea, pick should always be on talent not race. if they all happen to be indigenious great, but if not, no.

A quota system in any forum is fraught with danger as you lose the dynamic of best available.

Agreed, especially on the quota system, though hardly spoken about, racism can work both ways. Players should (and IMO are) picked on merit without any consideration on race. The players background (current living circumstances & ability to relocate without being homesick, etc) are things that are taken into account at the draft table, as no club wants to lose a player to homesickness via trade (see Ebert) or walking away (see Troy Taylor).

Personally for me as long as Hadley & co. continue drafting players that are the best for our needs, then I couldn't care less whether we end up having 10 indigenous players or none.

As for Manson, interesting to see his stocks rise. I believe he is too big of a gamble for a top 10 draft pick (in saying that GWS may use a pick on him because they can afford to). The key for Manson would be his ability to change environments and move to the city and deal with the work rate of a full time footballer. I think we should take into account with his performances in the NTFL that the league isn't of the highest standard (probably a bit below VFL reserves IMO) and with his 10 goal haul, you could assume that the oppositions best defender would have positioned on Fevola, and Manson may have had an undersized defender on him, as is common in that league. Definitely a talent however, and definitely a draft wild card. Will be interesting to see where he goes & how he develops.

Personally if he does go top 10, i hope it is not to us.

Yes, the gamble could be worth it, but we really aren't in a position to gamble.

If he does go high, that gives us a couple of more chances to secure a higher rated slider, and who knows who that could be....

I agree, even though we have two first round picks I still don't want to take the gamble given we are rebuilding. If he is available at 30 I would take him.

With Manson, personally I think the teams that could most likely take the risk with an earlier pick without causing too much damage or them copping too much flack are:

Gold Coast - have their team building, and a good group of forwards. If he didn't work out wouldn't hurt them too much.
WC - All their talls are either in their prime or later stages, short term wouldn't hurt them much at all if he didn't work out.
Pies - much the same as WC
Hawks - for the same reasons as the two above. Their tall forwards are probably a bit younger than the two above even so could definitely take a risk here.
Sydney - no so much that if he didn't work out it wouldn't affect them, more the fact that they just seem to be able to develop these guys so well and they have some very former and current indigenous players around the club as role models.

Those would be the main ones

Of the others I certainly don't think us, port, adelaide, freo, richmond, north or bulldogs can afford to take a chance.

GWS, I tend to think that they can't really afford to mess up a pick for a fwd. This draft will almost completely shape their list and at those early picks I don't think its something that they can afford to get wrong.

of the others I am not ruling them out immediately, however their ability to do it without too much issue isn't as strong as the top ones listed.

I think they can afford to take the risk. They have 11 high draft picks. If they pick Manson and he busts, they still have 10 of the best players of their age (plus the group they got last year). One stuffed up pick isn't going to really damage their list beyond repair (compared to, say, Port, if they get pick 6 wrong).

I know he probably won't be considered at our first two picks due to other talent being available, but for some reason I just have a feeling about Shane Kersten. Feel he's going to be a good pick up for whoever takes him. He seems to have the football smarts that we seem to have been looking for lately, an ability to be at the right place at the right time.

I thought Darling came into this season with very good endurance for a first year player while on the other hand Kersten has quite poor endurance for a draftee. Kersten may be in the Karnezis mould as far as first year players go.

Nor is Bolger, McInness or Paine who seems to be highly rated around here on BF. Can't say I've seen Bootsma or Hamling being mentioned on BF either (or in the general media). Quite interesting.

No Schade, Dobosz or Frost either! Very interesting...

What time of day does the draft take place? Sounds random, I know, but just planning something and trying to find out but can't see information anywhere.

Doors open at 7 pm, so would be some time after that.

Bootsma is the real surprise for me. I have not really rated him at all.

Hamling I like and have in my mock in the mid 40s. Lots of talent just doesn't have a position. He is the kind of guy Clayton of GC would love and with this I am tempted to slot him in for GC. Interesting that he has Hamling in there and not Frost who is a similar type of player.

I don't have McInnes in my top 30 so I am okay with that.

Sheehan picks the AA side and I am surprised the number of AAs he has left out of his top 30. Also he has a few guys in there that can't kick to save their lives - I don't take Talia or Clay Smith at all.
